Tesla says Autopilot was engaged during fatal Model X crash Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:05 PM PDT Tesla says Autopilot was engaged at the time of a deadly Model X crash that occurred March 23rd in Mountain View, California. The company posted a statement online late Friday, after local news reported that the victim had made several complaints to Tesla about the vehicle's Autopilot technology prior to the crash in which he died. After recovering the logs from the crash site, Tesla acknowledged that Autopilot was on, with the adaptive cruise control follow distance set to a minimum. The company also said that the driver, identified as Apple engineer Wei "Walter" Huang, had his hands off the steering wheel and was not responding to warnings to re-take control.

Jake Paul is getting his own talk show on YouTube Red Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:50 PM PDT Controversial vlogger Jake Paul, brother to similarly controversial vlogger Logan Paul, is developing a talk show for YouTube Red. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paul will host and executive produce the show, which is described as having a "late-night variety show feel." The pilot for the as-of-yet untitled series is expected to start shooting as early as May. Gavin Purcell will executive produce the pilot. (Purcell produced Late Night with Jimmy Fallon before working as head of video for The Verge's parent company, Vox Media; he recently signed on as showrunner for Sarah Silverman's upcoming Hulu show I Love You, America.) However, a YouTube spokesperson told Variety that the Paul show is just one of several projects the service... |
The ‘plant messiah’ on what it takes to save the world’s rarest species Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:13 PM PDT A fifth of all the world's plants are in danger of extinction, and Carlos Magdalena is traveling the world to save them. Magdalena, a botanical horticulturist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is popularly known as the "plant messiah." He's gone to countries like Australia, Peru, and Mauritius to find the world's endangered species and learn how to cultivate them before they go extinct. Magdalena's memoir, aptly titled The Plant Messiah: Adventures in Search of the World's Rarest Species, will be out from Doubleday on April 10. The Verge spoke to Magdalena about the importance of plant conservation, why he considers himself a "codebreaker," and what it takes to save the plants. The interview has been lightly edited and condensed for... |
Amazon’s Alexa can now set DVR recordings Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:55 PM PDT Alexa's ability to control DVRs is going to improve in the near future. Amazon announced today that it's updated its Video Skill API so that Alexa can now start recordings, launch an app, or carry out playback commands. Multiple set-top box makers already committed to updating or building Alexa skills with these features, including Dish, Verizon, TiVo, and DirecTV. Amazon says some have already been experimenting with these new features. Users will be able to say things like, "Alexa, record the Cubs game," and the set-top box will plan a recording. They'll also be able to tell the assistant to launch specific apps or services, like, "Alexa, launch Netflix." Finally, they'll be able to say, "Alexa, pause," without having to explicitly... |
I Kill Giants director Anders Walter on making a likable fantasy with a hateful protagonist Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:48 AM PDT Originally, it seemed like any film adaptation of Joe Kelly and J.M. Ken Niimura's 2009 graphic novel I Kill Giants would have to be animated. The book follows a troubled fifth-grader named Barbara who wears animal ears, engages in strange rituals, and dubs herself a giant-hunter. Her strange behavior makes her a pariah at her school, and especially draws the attention of some vicious bullies. But readers can see what the bullies can't: that Barbara is surrounded by fairies and strange creatures, and that there's a weird and threatening magic to her world. When she forges an awkward friendship with another young girl, Sophia, she slowly starts to drop her guard. But that proves dangerous to her equilibrium, given what she's fighting. D... |

According to Android Police, now you can showcase GIFs on the screen when your phone is asleep. The Always-On Display appears whenever you lock your phone and it shows the time, your notifications, remaining battery percentage, and other critical info. Users can change the colors, clock style, and other aspects of the AOD to make it feel a little more customized to their own liking. Finally, an Instagram client for the terminal! Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:13 AM PDT If you're anything like me, you're sick of all these slick apps with their "high-resolution images" and "buttons that actually do things." The terminal has what we crave: ASCII, unadorned URLs, and the complexities of managing a Python environment. Well, Reddit user ghostreport, who goes by billcccheng on GitHub, finally has the answer: an Instagram news feed for the terminal. It has all that chaos and randomness of the regular Instagram news feed algorithm, except now it's difficult to tell what the images are of because they're in ASCII. Win, win! Instagram Terminal Feed is written in Python, and fairly easy to set up — the steps are listed in the GitHub readme. You login with your Instagram credentials, it flashes a set... |

Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One improves immensely on the book Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:36 AM PDT Fans tend to either love or hate Ernest Cline's bestselling 2011 novel Ready Player One. There are legitimate reasons for both reactions. On the love side: it's a light, airy pop confection, crammed with familiar cultural references, which Cline recontextualizes in surprising ways. On the hate side: the prose can be extremely clumsy, as it is in this paragraph where teenage protagonist Wade Watts describes the virtual car he constructed for himself in the vast online world where he spends most of his waking hours:
