Uber is shutting down its on-demand delivery service, UberRush Posted: 31 Mar 2018 01:45 PM PDT Uber is shutting down UberRush, its on-demand delivery service, reports TechCrunch. The company said in an email to customers that it will be ending the program on June 30th, 2018. The company launched the on-demand delivery service in 2014 in Manhattan, which allowed users to hire someone to pick up a package and deliver it to another location. The company later expanded the service to Chicago and San Francisco in 2015, but while it opened its Application Program Interface (API) for private businesses to use it as a delivery option, it never expanded beyond those three cities. In April 2017, Uber announced that restaurants would no longer be able to use the service, shifting food delivery over to another program, UberEats. A... |
Here are the 2018 Hugo Award nominees Posted: 31 Mar 2018 01:09 PM PDT The nominees for the 2018 Hugo Awards were announced today, representing the best science fiction and fantasy literature published in 2017. The Hugo Awards are one of speculative fiction's most prestigious prizes. Named for Amazing Stories editor Hugo Gernsback and first handed out in 1953, they recognize the best works in science fiction and fantasy literature each year. The awards are overseen by the World Science Fiction Society and are selected by members of the World Science Fiction Convention (known as Worldcon). Another set of prizes, the Retrospective Hugo Awards, recognizes works published prior to the beginning of the Hugos (this year, for works published in 1943). Last year, women almost completely swept the awards: N.K.... |

Google is shuttering its URL shortening service, goo.gl Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:50 PM PDT Google announced that it is shutting down its URL shortening service, goo.gl. The company says that new and anonymous users won't be able to create links through the goo.gl console as of April 13th, but existing users will be able to use it for another year, after which it will be discontinued completely. Firebase Software Engineer Michael Hermanto says that the company introduced the URL shortener in 2009, and that since then, the ways in which people share information on the web has changed, while additional URL shorteners grown in popularity. He notes that Google is refocusing its efforts by replacing it with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL), which allow users to specific locations in iOS, Android or web apps. Existing users will be... |
Report: Netflix is ‘in advanced talks’ to acquire Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp studio Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:17 PM PDT Last year, French filmmaker Luc Besson released Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, a glitzy, CGI-filled summer blockbuster which ended up being a disappointment at the box office for his studio EuropaCorp. According to a report in the French site Capital (via The Playlist and io9), Netflix is "in advanced talks" to purchase the studio. Besson co-founded the studio in 1999, and since then, it's been known for films such as Lucy, Taken, Lock-Out, The Circle, and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The studio blamed the later and other weak performers for an $83 million loss at the end of 2017, and weeks later, Variety reported that there were several buyers interested in purchasing the company, which was struggling with... |
Mineko’s Night Market is a cat-filled spin on Animal Crossing Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:00 PM PDT The world of Mineko's Night Market is one obsessed with cats. Felines roam freely around its cartoony, cutesy island. Mini-games make sport of their adventures, and occasionally they'll trail after you like ducklings behind their mother. On Mount Fugu Island, inhabitants even worship cat deities — specifically, the Sun Cat, a portly, upright creature called Abe. Developer Meowza Games has made no secret of its love of one specific animal, but the pleasing aesthetic of its upcoming game only lends to the friendly, approachable atmosphere of it all. Mineko's Night Market, launching this year, follows a girl named Mineko who's recently moved to Mount Fugu Island. She currently runs a market, but it's been in a financial pinch as of late.... |
President Trump accuses Amazon of scamming the USPS Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:08 AM PDT This morning, Trump once again tweeted about online retailer Amazon.com, alleging that it is scamming the United States Postal Service and that the agency should raise its shipping rates. He also says that The Washington Post — owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos — should register as a lobbyist. Earlier this week, Axios reported that President Donald Trump wanted to take on Amazon. The President followed up with a tweet on March 29th, saying that Amazon was taking advantage of the USPS, paying little in state and local taxes, and putting retailers out of business. The New York Times outlined earlier this week that Amazon has collected sales taxes since April 2017. The retailer reported $957 million in income taxes last year. The Times also... |
How an extra lens can transform your iPhone’s photos Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:00 AM PDT A few years ago, the hit Sundance film Tangerine was shot entirely on an iPhone 5S to surprisingly good results. And last year, Steven Soderbergh did the same the same thing while making Unsane, with his only camera being an iPhone 7 Plus. While a lot more than camera gear goes into making those movies look the way they do, the fact that professional filmmakers are using cameras that many of us keep in our pockets is a pretty encouraging sign when it comes to what we should be able to produce. I wanted to test out just what you can do to improve your phone's photo- and video-taking abilities, so I tried out a few different things: some add-on lenses, a microphone, and a stabilizer. You can see the results in the video above. One thing I... |
The best, worst, and weirdest cars at the 2018 New York Auto Show Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:00 AM PDT The New York International Auto Show opens to the public this weekend, and upon entering the Javits Center attendees will be bombarded with new cars, SUVs, trucks and even a handful of supercars that will most likely be out their price range. Here's our primer for anyone who wants to cut through the noise and see the stuff that really matters. Most Futurama-ready car: Genesis EssentiaAnyone who grew up on dog-eared copies of Popular Science probably assumed we'd be riding around in self-driving cars while viewing the passing scenery through glass or plastic bubble roofs. The self-driving car part is playing out right now, but the glass or plastic bubble part seems to... |
Google Maps is adding a Where’s Waldo? mini-game for the next week Posted: 31 Mar 2018 09:00 AM PDT Starting today and continuing on for the next week, Google is bringing Where's Waldo? to Google Maps. On Android, iOS, and the desktop, you'll see Waldo pop up in his signature red and white stripes and give you a friendly wave. From there, just tap or click on him and you'll see the option to play a game that's straight out of the classic children's puzzle books. This is one of Google's annual April Fools' Day jokes, but the Maps integration is actually happening. Aside from Waldo himself, you'll also be on the lookout for his friends Wenda, Woof, Wizard Whitebeard, and also the villainous Odlaw. (If you're like me, those faces probably won't be quite as familiar to you when you start playing.) Once you find Waldo,... |
