China’s out-of-control space station harmlessly breaks up over the Pacific Ocean

Posted: 01 Apr 2018 06:53 PM PDT

China's out-of-control space station — Tiangong-1 — has at last plunged through Earth's atmosphere and landed somewhere over the southern Pacific Ocean. The spiraling spacecraft made its descent at around 8:16PM ET on April 1st, according to US Strategic Command, which was able to confirm the exact point of reentry along with organizations in eight other countries. The vehicle's fall puts an end to the space station's seven years in orbit, and it managed not to hit any populated areas on the way down.

It was hard to know exactly where Tiangong-1 was going to make its final descent, which is the case for most falling space debris. Sunday afternoon, trackers were able to narrow down the time of the vehicle's reentry to a three- to...

Niantic settles class action lawsuit following last year’s disastrous Pokémon Go Fest in Chicago

Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:08 PM PDT

Last summer, Niantic Labs celebrated the first year of Pokémon GO with an in-person event in Chicago, with others to follow in Europe. It didn't go well: spotty cell signals and overwhelmed servers turned the event into a disaster, and two dozen attendees launched a class action lawsuit to try and recoup travel expenses. TechCrunch is reporting that Niantic has reached a settlement, to the tune of $1.5 million.

The company will end up paying $1,575,000 for attendees' flights, hotel rooms, car rentals, parking fees, milage, and tolls. The company will put up a website by May 25th for individuals affected by the problems, and it will notify users via e-mail.

To qualify for the settlement, users have to have checked into the festival in...

Hyperspektiv is a photo app that produces glitchy, psychedelic images

Posted: 01 Apr 2018 11:00 AM PDT

I love a good photo app, but there are so many in the App Store that it's hard to know where to begin. If you're looking for a photo- and video-editing app that does something a little different than the standard Instagram-like filters, a glitch-inducing app called Hyperspektiv might be a nice alternative to play around with.

Hyperspektiv has been around for a few years, but it's recently gained traction after being featured in the App Store. The app adds random distortion effects, such as colorful glitches and floaty mirroring to a kaleidoscope twist. There are plenty of options to experiment with in Hyperspektiv, which makes it worth $1 price. There are 30 filters in total, including a Wild Card option you can repeatedly tap to...

16 new science fiction and fantasy books to read this April

Posted: 01 Apr 2018 10:00 AM PDT

Last month, I picked up The Big Picture: The Fight for the Future of Movies, a new book by Wall Street Journal reporter Ben Fritz. Fritz looks closely at the rise of prestige TV shows like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, as well as mega-franchises like Disney's Star Wars and Marvel properties, and what their existence means for the future of Hollywood. He also traces the downfall of former Sony chairperson Amy Pascal following a massive email leak from the studio, and provides a good look at her approach to acquiring and developing films, as the entire film industry grapples with the growth of streaming services like Netflix and Amazon.

The Big Picture is equal parts fascinating and horrifying — it suggests that even types of films...

Telegram has raised a total of $1.7 billion from its two pre-ICO sales

Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:46 AM PDT

In February, secure messaging service Telegram launched a presale for its cryptocurency prior to an Initial Coin Offering (ICO), raising $850 million from 81 investors, and later that month, The Verge learned that it was launching a second private presale, in which it aimed to double that amount. Bloomberg Technology reports that the company did just that, and has raised a total of $1.7 billion in March between the two sales.

In a filing to the Securities and Exchanges Commission, Telegram says that it raised an additional $850 million from 94 investors in the second sale, bringing the total amount to $1.7 billion. It also says that it might "pursue one or more subsequent offerings" beyond these first two sales.

The company is...

This 2011 visual novel predicted how privacy would change in 2018

Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:00 AM PDT

It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend.

I played Don't Take It Personally, Babe, It Just Ain't Your Story for the first time shortlyafter it was released about seven years ago. It's a game that's stuck with me ever since. That's partly because of the metafictional way the story of the game is told, which sort of circumvents the visual novel presentation of the game. But it's also because of what it says about privacy on the internet and in social networks. In 2011, it felt like an interesting extrapolation of what the next generation's attitudes could be having...

April Fools’ Day 2018: the best (and lamest) pranks

Posted: 01 Apr 2018 08:09 AM PDT

April Fools' Day is upon us, bringing with it a deluge of terrible jokes, ill-advised pranks, and the occasional inspired product concept. The "holiday" has been around for centuries, and companies from all over the internet have been imposing their jokes on us for the last couple of days.

While most are pretty groan-worthy, some are actually a bit entertaining, so we've rounded up some of the best (and some of the lamest) to check out. We'll update this list throughout the day as new jokes ("jokes?") emerge.

Hello from the Magic Tavern is a hilarious improvised fantasy epic in podcast form

Posted: 01 Apr 2018 08:00 AM PDT

There are a ton of podcasts out there, but finding the right one can be difficult. In our new column Pod Hunters, we cover what we've been listening to that we can't stop thinking about.

During last year's New York Comic Con, a friend told me that I had to come with him to the live-taping of an improv-comedy podcast. I was ... skeptical, but went along, as he explained the premise behind the show, Hello from the Magic Tavern.

Essentially, it's an epic fantasy story created by Chicago comedian Arnie Niekamp. In it, his character (also named Arnie Niekamp) is getting food at Burger King when he suddenly falls through a portal to a magical world known as Foon. Fortunately, he has his podcasting equipment, and a weak Wi-Fi signal from said...

Cloudflare launches 1.1.1.1 DNS service that will speed up your internet

Posted: 01 Apr 2018 07:15 AM PDT

Cloudflare is launching its own consumer DNS service today, on April Fools' Day, that promises to speed up your internet connection and help keep it private. The service is using https://1.1.1.1, and it's not a joke but an actual DNS resolver that anyone can use. Cloudflare claims it will be "the Internet's fastest, privacy-first consumer DNS service." While OpenDNS and Google DNS both exist, Cloudflare is focusing heavily on the privacy aspect of its own DNS service with a promise to wipe all logs of DNS queries within 24 hours.

DNS services are typically provided by internet service providers to resolve a domain name like Google.com into a real IP address that routers and switches understand. It's an essential part of the internet, but...
