This fancy wool fiber mouse pad doubles as a wireless charger for your phone Posted: 12 Apr 2018 05:04 PM PDT New York City-based design studio Takieso Graft Design has developed fancy, wool-covered mouse pad with a wireless charger for smartphones built into the top. The device, called the MousePad+, is up on Kickstarter right now for the early-bird price of $29, and by all accounts it looks quite nice. The wireless charging pad itself, which is a Qi charger, is covered in a brown, black, or blue leather depending on your choice, while the mouse pad portion uses wool fiber over a felt base. It can be plugged direct into your laptop or computer, and the company is advertising it as portable, in that you can fold it up and wrap the cable to fasten it into a neat rectangle only slightly larger than a standard pocket book. |
Senators propose legislation to protect the privacy of users’ online data after Facebook hearing Posted: 12 Apr 2018 03:39 PM PDT Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and John Kennedy (R-LA) will introduce legislation to protect the privacy of users' online data, the pair said today in a joint statement. Though a bill has not been drafted yet, the legislation would, among other things, give users recourse options if their data is breached, and the right to opt out of data tracking and collection. The proposed legislation will address seven key points, the senators said:

Hulu discounts its HBO add-on just in time for Westworld Posted: 12 Apr 2018 01:38 PM PDT Hulu is now offering a discount on its HBO add-on, timed with Westworld's season 2 premiere this month. Now, instead of paying an extra $14.99 a month, Hulu subscribers can add HBO to their plan for only $4.99 a month. The discount lasts for six months. After that, users will have to pay the full fare again. Hulu started offering HBO as an add-on last summer, coordinated with the return of Game of Thrones' seventh season. Other add-ons Hulu offers include Cinemax and Showtime. With the add-on, users can sign onto HBO through Hulu or use their Hulu login credentials to sign into HBO Now, the standalone over-the-top version of HBO. If you're also on the $7.99 limited ads plan for Hulu, nabbing this HBO discount means you're only paying... |
What Syfy’s Superman prequel series Krypton is doing right Posted: 12 Apr 2018 01:06 PM PDT Superman's origin story is so well-known that Grant Morrison opened his All-Star Superman series by summing it up in just eight words: "Doomed planet. Desperate scientists. Last hope. Kindly couple." Krypton showrunner Cameron Welsh, who cites All-Star Superman as one of his favorite Superman stories, has the unenviable task of trying to make audiences really care about the "doomed planet / desperate scientists" half of that story. Prequels always struggle to justify their existence, and that's especially true for Krypton, Syfy's pre-Superman prequel series. The show has to deal with the fact that all of its characters are doomed, and its eventual endpoint was first established 80 years ago. It also has to deal with the inevitable... |
Netflix renews Jessica Jones for a third season Posted: 12 Apr 2018 12:56 PM PDT Netflix announced today that it has renewed Jessica Jones for a third season, about a month after the show's season 2 premiere. Although critics generally praised the debut season of the Marvel series, many deemed its second season a sophomore slump. "The first five episodes are marked by oppressive dourness, with precious little relief," Samantha Nelson wrote in her review for The Verge. Others said the show improved as the season went on, however, with Jones (Krysten Ritter) looking more and more like a superhero by the finale. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, Disney recently ended a 2012 deal with Netflix and pulled all Marvel feature films from the platform as it prepares to launch its own streaming service. Marvel properties... |
Watch the star-studded cast of Ocean’s 8 rob the Met Gala Posted: 12 Apr 2018 12:46 PM PDT The Ocean's Eleven series has historically focused on the achievements of its male characters — groups of men coming together to throw caution to the wind — but the sort-of sequel Ocean's 8 reenvisions the series as an all-female job. As detailed in the film's latest trailer, Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), the "estranged sister" to George Clooney's Danny Ocean from the trilogy, begins drafting her all-star lineup to pull off a jewelry heist at the Met Gala in New York. Their target: a $150 million necklace worn by a character played by Anne Hathaway. When filmmaker Steven Soderbergh made Ocean's Eleven in 2001, he was riffing on a 1960 film that was best known for featuring the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr.... |
Uber drivers are freelancers, not employees, judge rules Posted: 12 Apr 2018 12:40 PM PDT Uber drivers are independent contractors, not full-time employees of the ride-hailing company, a federal judge ruled in what is said to be the first classification of Uber drivers under federal law. Reuters reported that US District Judge Michael Baylson said on Wednesday that Uber does not exert enough control over drivers for its limo service, Uber Black, to be considered their employer under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. The drivers work when they want to and are free to do what they want in between rides, Baylson said. A spokesperson for Uber said the company is "pleased" with the judge's ruling, while a lawyer for the plaintiffs said he would appeal the ruling. U... |
Chinese fans of banned parody app find each other offline using secret codes Posted: 12 Apr 2018 12:28 PM PDT Now that a popular parody and meme app in China called "Neihan Duanzi" has been shut down and its social media account on WeChat got deleted, fans of the app are gathering in solidarity offline in subtle protest. Drivers are honking at each other in code to indicate that they're fans, The New York Times reports. A coded message might be a car honk, followed by a pause, and two more honks. This week, while in the US Congress was slowly grilling Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in China, regulators brought down swift bans on offending news apps and social media apps. On Monday, China banned several big news apps including Jinri Toutiao, owned by Beijing-based Bytedance Technology. Then, the following day, authorities shut down Neihan... |
New ‘high definition’ vinyl promises longer playing time and louder, clearer audio Posted: 12 Apr 2018 12:24 PM PDT Austria-based startup Rebeat Innovation has just received $4.8 million in funding for a new way of manufacturing records called "high definition vinyl," according to Pitchfork. The process, the patent for which was originally filed in 2016, claims to allow for records with longer playing times, louder volume, and greater audio fidelity. To create HD vinyl, the audio is first digitally converted to a 3D topographic map. Then, lasers engrave the map onto a stamper, which makes an impression in the vinyl. Conceptually, this is not too dissimilar from how traditional vinyl is made — a needle etches grooves in rotating lacquer, which is used to create a mother copy that is then used to form the stamper. Rebeat Innovation is betting that by... |
How much do Lyft drivers earn an hour? It’s complicated Posted: 12 Apr 2018 11:50 AM PDT The amount someone can earn driving for Uber and Lyft has been the subject of intense debate in recent years. Now, Lyft is bringing some clarity to the conversation around how much drivers earn on an hourly basis. In short: it's complicated. First, Lyft says that driver work generally breaks down into three sections: turning the app on and waiting for requests, driving to pick up passengers, and driving passengers to their destinations. The ride-hailing company says that since drivers can generally do whatever they want during that first period — driving, working for another app, or nothing at all — it shouldn't count toward a driver's hourly earnings. In that respect, just accounting for periods two and three, Lyft drivers' median... |
