How it’s possible for a person to be sucked from an airplane mid-flight Posted: 17 Apr 2018 07:22 PM PDT When the left engine on Southwest 1380 exploded today, a woman was nearly sucked out of the plane through the broken window next to her, other passengers on the flight told NBC. It sounds impossible, and officials haven't yet confirmed the reports — but people have been sucked out of damaged airplanes before. The Boeing 737's engine exploded on Tuesday morning while the plane was flying from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Dallas, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in Philadelphia. One passenger died, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a press briefing, and the Philadelphia fire department reported several injuries. But NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway told The Verge in an email that he had no information about... |
YouTube CEO addresses demonetization, ignores frustrated small creators Posted: 17 Apr 2018 03:52 PM PDT YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announced in a blog post today that YouTube will be launching a pilot program with a small group of users in an attempt to address and ameliorate its creators' continued concerns regarding demonetization and other recent, largely unpopular changes to the YouTube Partners Program. In the post, which was largely an update from the past year and in particular the past few months, Wojcicki acknowledged the frustrations of many content creators who have voiced their concerns, saying that the last two weeks had been "challenging" and that YouTube was "committed to communicate more with all of you," while trumpeting that "channels earning five figures annually grew more than 35 percent, while channels earning six... |
Amazon made an efficient Android browser called Internet, and it’s now available in India Posted: 17 Apr 2018 03:17 PM PDT Amazon now has an Android web browser app that's designed to use minimal storage and data. It's called... Internet. The app has been sitting unspotted in the Google Play app store since March. Amazon hasn't publicly announced its launch, which was reported by TechCrunch. It's currently only available to users located in India and runs on Android 5.0 and higher devices. The app offers a web browser that supports private tabs that don't save browser history and it has a homepage that shows cricket news and more general headlines for its users. Internet is reminiscent of Facebook Lite, YouTube Go, or Gmail Go, all apps that companies launched as slimmer versions of the original mobile versions. They provide the same basic features as the... |
Elon Musk says Tesla will build Model 3s 24/7 until the end of June Posted: 17 Apr 2018 03:11 PM PDT Elon Musk has set an aggressive new target for production of the Model 3, and it will operate its Fremont, California factory 24 hours a day in order to meet the goal, according to an internal email obtained by Jalopnik. Musk now says Tesla needs to make 6,000 Model 3s per week by the end of June, an increase of the company's previous target of 5,000 per week. The reason for the new target, he says, is that 5,000 Model 3s per week leaves the company with "no margin for error" across the company's manufacturing process and supply chain. "Actual production will move as fast as the least lucky and least well-executed part of the entire Tesla production/supply chain system," he writes. To accomplish these production numbers, Musk says Tesla... |
Cambridge Analytica planned to launch its own cryptocurrency Posted: 17 Apr 2018 02:14 PM PDT The company behind Facebook's massive data leak scandal, Cambridge Analytica, attempted to develop its own cryptocurrency this past year and intended to raise funds through an initial coin offering, Reuters and The New York Times reported today. The digital coin would have helped people store online personal data and even sell it, former Cambridge Analytica employee Brittany Kaiser told the Times. Cambridge Analytica, which obtained the data of 87 million Facebook users, was hoping to raise as much as $30 million through the venture, anonymous sources told Reuters. Cambridge Analytica confirmed to Reuters that it had previously explored blockchain technology, but did not confirm the coin offering and didn't say whether efforts are still... |
New rules on making cars in China could help Tesla — or give it even more to worry about Posted: 17 Apr 2018 02:04 PM PDT The Chinese government announced today that it plans to change the rules for foreign car manufacturers that want to make vehicles in the country. It's a major shift in the larger landscape for American, Asian, and European automakers. It's also one that could benefit Tesla — though maybe not without burdening the company, which is already stretched thin as it tries to crank out Model 3s here in the United States. Until now, foreign automakers were not allowed to own more than 50 percent of manufacturing efforts on Chinese soil. This forced automakers to not only share profits in what has become the largest car market on the planet, but in some cases, share expertise as well, all as part of an effort to create a rising tide for Chinese... |
This may be the new free Spotify Posted: 17 Apr 2018 01:39 PM PDT There have been reports about upcoming changes to Spotify's free tier of service over the past couple of weeks, and it appears the music service is now serving the updated UI to select users. While The Verge cannot confirm if this is officially the new form of the free version for mobile expected to roll out next week, these UI changes, which include the option to play songs on demand in select playlists, would make the free tier act more like a Premium account. Spotify declined to comment. Last week, Bloomberg reported these updates would specifically impact mobile users, and a flyer for the company's upcoming April 24th event recently confirmed that modifications were coming to Spotify mobile. While there are several notable changes in... |
IRS extends tax deadline to April 18th after e-filing outage Posted: 17 Apr 2018 01:12 PM PDT The Internal Revenue Service isn't the most technologically sophisticated government agency in the US. As evidence, check out its online payment system, called Direct Pay, that still remains out of service on the tax filing deadline day for the entire country, as noted by Engadget. The Direct Pay system went down sometime early this morning as part of a widespread failure of the IRS's electronic filing system, due most likely to a technical glitch possibly related to the huge influx of people trying to file returns. The system was down for much of Tuesday, and the IRS said it would extend the tax filing deadline to April 18th as a result of the outage. That said, the agency expects around 5 million people to file taxes on April 17th,... |
One passenger dead after Southwest Airlines flight makes an emergency landing Posted: 17 Apr 2018 12:45 PM PDT A Southwest flight en route from New York City to Dallas made an emergency landing in Philadelphia after one of its engines blew out, shattering a window, leaving one passenger dead and injuring seven others. One female passenger was almost sucked out of the plane after the explosion caused a depressurization, the passenger's father told MSNBC. It is unclear, though, whether she was the passenger that ultimately died. National Traffic Safety Board chairman Robert Sumwalt said in a news conference that the passenger's death was the first fatality for a US airline in nine years. (Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crashed in San Francisco in 2013, leaving three passengers dead.)

Buick’s semi-autonomous electric concept promotes 370 miles of range Posted: 17 Apr 2018 12:32 PM PDT Buick may still have a reputation for making pleasant if less-than-exciting sedans for older buyers, but it's one of China's most popular brands. That's why the Enspire concept is being shown at this year's Auto China show in Beijing, and it's full of advanced technology promises. The Enspire, announced on Tuesday in China, is a design and technology study for General Motors to explore what the public thinks of the brand's idea for an all-electric SUV. It adopts some of the technologies we've seen on other concepts, such as lots of OLED to project vehicle information, navigation and audio functions, as well as 5G connectivity. Buick says the Enspire has a "'surround skyline' interior theme and suspended theater-type seating," which... |
