Intel is giving up on its smart glasses Posted: 18 Apr 2018 07:37 PM PDT Intel has confirmed that it plans to shut down the New Devices Group (NDG), and cease development on the Vaunt smart glasses project we revealed earlier this year. The story was first reported this evening by The Information, which also notes that the closure will probably result in "some layoffs" from the team that was reportedly around 200 people. Here's Intel's statement:

YouTuber Mars Argo is suing Poppy’s creator for ‘severe’ abuse, ripping off her persona Posted: 18 Apr 2018 03:28 PM PDT YouTuber Mars Argo is suing musician and internet persona Poppy and her creator, Titanic Sinclair, otherwise known as Corey Mixter. In court documents obtained by The Verge, Mars Argo, real name Brittany Sheets, alleges that in addition to enduring "severe emotional and psychological abuse and manipulation from Mr. Mixter," he also crafted a "Mars Argo knockoff" in the form of Poppy. Sheets is also seeking a domestic violence restraining order against Mixter, as well as damages against Poppy actress Moriah Pereira "for being a knowing accomplice to Mr. Mixter's unlawful actions." The first Poppy video, "Poppy Eats Cotton Candy," was released in November 2014, the same year Sheets and Mixter split. Poppy has since amassed a huge following... |
Is Secretary Zinke a geologist? Scientists weigh in Posted: 18 Apr 2018 03:14 PM PDT Volcano scientist Jess Phoenix has challenged Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to a battle of geologic knowledge after CNN reported yesterday that Zinke has repeatedly claimed to be a geologist, despite apparently never having worked as one. "Winner gets the DOI job, loser never claims to be a geologist again," she tweeted. It's a claim Zinke has made "at least 40 times in public settings," Sara Ganim reports for CNN. That includes his efforts to justify excluding Florida from plans to expand offshore drilling. (Florida's "geology is different," he said in an interview with CNN.) The thing is, while Zinke did major in geology as an undergraduate, he never actually worked as a geologist after college, according to Ganim. Interior Department... |
Facebook is building a team to design its own chips Posted: 18 Apr 2018 03:02 PM PDT Facebook looks to be in the early stages of developing its own silicon to power its devices and servers, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The company is looking to hire a manager tasked with assembling an "end-to-end SoC / ASIC, firmware, and driver development organization." So the plan is only coming together, but Facebook's interest in becoming more self-reliant — and less dependent on outside companies like Qualcomm — makes it the latest tech giant to start down this path. Apple already has self-branded chips inside its iOS devices and is reportedly planning to replace the Intel processors in Mac computers with its own. Google produces custom AI chips and included its first consumer-focused silicon (an image processor) in... |
Amazon sells record number of turkeys Posted: 18 Apr 2018 02:56 PM PDT Year after year, Amazon brags about selling more things than ever, and now the company has added turkey sales to its leaderboard. In a letter to shareholders, CEO Jeff Bezos celebrated the milestone made possible by its takeover of Whole Foods. "Our Prime member exclusive promotion broke Whole Foods' all-time record for turkeys sold during the Thanksgiving season," Bezos wrote. In accordance with Amazon's tradition of congratulating itself for vaguely-defined excellence, Bezos did not say exactly how many turkeys were sold. He also declined to say how many Fire TVs, Kindles, and Echo devices Amazon sold, but noted 2017 was also the company's "best year yet for hardware sales." Amazon did release one useful stat today: in 2017, the... |
Jeff Bezos reveals that Amazon has over 100 million Prime subscribers Posted: 18 Apr 2018 02:23 PM PDT Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has revealed in his annual shareholders letter today that his company has over 100 million Prime members, marking the first time in the 13-year history of Amazon offering its Prime membership that the company has ever revealed its number of subscribers. Analysts have speculated for years as the scope of Amazon's premium service, which Amazon has kept secret for years. According to Bezos, Amazon Prime also saw its best year ever in 2017, with the company shipping over five billion products with Prime and signing up more new members than in any previous year. Amazon charges $99 for Prime membership, which includes a slew of perks for the online retailer, including free two-day shipping, access to Amazon's Prime Video... |
Whole Foods will end its rewards program and fold it into Amazon Prime Posted: 18 Apr 2018 02:15 PM PDT Whole Foods will shut down its rewards program, digital coupons, and customers' online accounts on May 2nd and fold everything into Amazon Prime, according to an email to customers this week. The email, as spotted by Marketwatch, says unused rewards will not roll over to Amazon Prime, so customers should try to use their benefits before the program officially sunsets. No other details were provided, but the online retailer did hint that additional announcements are forthcoming. Since Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods last year, the online retailer has been more present in Whole Foods stores across the US. On the day Amazon officially closed the acquisition deal, it immediately started selling Echo speakers in stores nationwide. Over... |
A Google update just created a big problem for anti-censorship tools Posted: 18 Apr 2018 01:55 PM PDT App developers won't be able to use Google to get around internet censorship anymore. The Google App Engine is discontinuing a practice called domain-fronting, which let services use Google's network to get around state-level internet blocks. A recent change in Google's network architecture means the trick no longer works. First spotted by Tor developers on April 13th, the change has been rolling out across Google services and threatens to disrupt services for a number of anti-censorship tools, including Signal, GreatFire.org and Psiphon's VPN services. Reached by The Verge, Google said the changes were the result of a long-planned network update. "Domain fronting has never... |
Days after Russian clampdown, Iran signals that a ban of Telegram is imminent Posted: 18 Apr 2018 12:51 PM PDT The Iranian government appears to be preparing to institute a nationwide ban of Telegram, only days after Russia banned Telegram. Earlier this year, Iran temporarily banned Telegram and Instagram during widespread protests in January. Telegram — an encrypted messaging app that also features channels often used by official bodies like news organizations or even government entities — has 40 million users in Iran, a country where approximately 50 million people have internet access. In a public announcement on Wednesday, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei said that government entities would no longer be using Telegram, in an effort to curb Telegram's "monopoly." As a testament to Telegram's monopoly, Khamenei posted this message on his... |
