Sonos will only bring AirPlay 2 to its recent speakers Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:20 PM PDT Last year, Sonos announced plans to add support for Apple's AirPlay 2 to its speakers. AirPlay 2 is a significant feature in that it will allow iPhone and iPad users to send audio from basically any app to Sonos' great-sounding speakers. And you'll be able to tell Siri to play tracks from Apple Music on Sonos systems; the Sonos One smart speaker doesn't currently let you launch music from Apple's service with voice commands, but AirPlay 2 is a roundabout way of introducing that convenience. The difference is that you'll be doing the talking to your phone instead of the Sonos. Sonos isn't saying exactly when AirPlay 2 integration will be ready for release. Apple itself has yet to officially launch AirPlay 2 for iOS yet; it's still in... |
Snapchat plans to test unskippable six-second ads Posted: 25 Apr 2018 05:14 PM PDT In its quest to turn a profit, Snapchat parent company Snap Inc. is looking for more ways to generate revenue while preventing users from defecting to other platforms. But Snapchat users may have to endure more ads in the process — and soon those ads will be ones that can't be skipped. Snapchat will start testing a six-second ad aptly called "Commercials," Digiday reported Wednesday. The test, scheduled to start in the middle of next month and which the company confirmed, will appear in some shows, but not in personal stories or the Discover news section. People familiar with the test told the publication that the move is an attempt to see how many ads users will tolerate. Commercials is expected to consist of high-quality ads from... |
Ford will only sell two kinds of cars in America Posted: 25 Apr 2018 04:27 PM PDT Ford has previously made it known it's placing its bets on two major areas: the extremely profitable line of trucks and SUVs and a heavy investment in more forward-looking mobility solutions like connected cars and smart cities. But the automaker made that official, as it announced Wednesday it would be abandoning all of its traditional sedans and hatchbacks for the North American market. In its quarterly earnings call, Ford CEO Jim Hackett said the company would offer only the Mustang and new Focus (in SUV-like Active trim) in North America at some point in the near future, after the current product cycle winds down. This effectively kills the Fiesta and Fusion ranges, while the new Focus arrives sometime next year — likely sourced from... |
Facebook’s quarterly earnings are a bright spot amid a sea of bad headlines Posted: 25 Apr 2018 04:22 PM PDT Facebook reported strong first quarter earnings today, marking a bit of good news for a company that's been challenged with a torrent of bad headlines, a Congressional testimony centered on its chief executive, and what has shaped up to be its largest existential crisis to date. The Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal came to light late in the first quarter, and therefore we won't see if it had any substantial impact on Facebook's business until next quarter. That said, the tech giant was able to recover from the daily active user slump it suffered last year, when its US and Canada DAU number shrank to 184 million and marked the first time Facebook usage has ever decreased in the company's primary market. The slump was primarily... |
Microsoft follows Google and ditches its pistol emoji for Windows Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:52 PM PDT Google and Facebook both committed to ditching the pistol emoji earlier today, leaving Microsoft as the only major platform with a realistic handgun emoji. Microsoft now says it's planning to ditch the pistol, too. "We are in the process of evolving our emojis to reflect our values and the feedback we've received," says Microsoft in a Twitter message, revealing a water gun replacement for the pistol emoji. Apple, WhatsApp, Samsung, and Twitter have all switched to water guns in recent years, after Microsoft switched from its sci-fi space blaster to a real firearm back in 2016. As the debate over gun violence in the US intensifies, it's clear Microsoft doesn't want to be seen as the only major platform not switching to a water gun. It's... |
Here’s what Netflix’s Wild Wild Country doesn’t explain about cult leaders Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:38 PM PDT When Ma Anand Sheela first met the Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh in his apartment in Mumbai in 1968, she hugged him and cried. "My whole head melted," Sheela says in the Netflix docuseries Wild Wild Country, which discusses Rajneesh and his cult. "My life was complete. My life was fulfilled." Rajneesh, who died in 1990, was a powerful spiritual guru who had thousands of followers in India and the West. In 1981, with the help of Sheela, who became his personal assistant, Rajneesh bought a ranch nearby the tiny town of Antelope, Oregon, and moved his cult there, creating a whole new city named Rajneeshpuram. It's no surprise that the situation snowballed, leading to heated confrontations with local residents, attempted murder, and... |
Kanye West is not in fact losing millions of followers for tweeting his love of Donald Trump Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:36 PM PDT If you've been following the philosophical, stream-of-consciousness ramblings of Kanye West on Twitter lately, you may have been shocked — or maybe not at all shocked — to see him tweet effusive praise of President Donald Trump, bringing full circle the rapper's conversion to alt-right internet troll. What you may not know is that there's a rumor going around that the move cost Kanye millions of Twitter followers. That rumor is false. A Twitter spokesperson confirmed to The Verge that Kanye remains at around 27 million Twitter followers, roughly the same amount he had before he began tweeting things like, "We are both dragon energy," and, "He is my brother," referring to the 71-year-old Republican president of the United States. "We... |
Reps say ‘we have yet to receive any responses’ to questions from Zuckerberg testimony Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:13 PM PDT When Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress earlier this month, he left a lot of questions in his wake. More than 20 times, he responded to Congressional inquiries by saying that he didn't have the information on hand but that his team would follow up with more information after the hearing had closed. But 13 days after the hearings, congressional democrats on the House Energy and Commerce committee say still they haven't heard anything from Facebook. "It's been two weeks since our hearing and we have yet to receive responses to questions that Mr. Zuckerberg could not answer on that day," Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) said. "Furthermore, our Committee staff met with Facebook staffers two weeks... |
Sonos files for an IPO that may value the company at $3 billion Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:11 PM PDT Smart speaker and audio company Sonos has confidentially filed paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission indicating it plans to hold an initial public offering as soon as this summer, according to a report today from The Wall Street Journal. The report says it's likely Sonos would raise hundreds of millions of dollars in capital with an IPO, and that it's market valuation may be around $2.5 to $3 billion as a result. The IPO could happen as soon as June. Sonos has been around since 2002, when it became one of the first audio hardware companies to invest heavily in wireless speakers. Since then, Sonos has grown to be a massive player in the home audio space, earning more than $1 billion in annual revenue thanks to its... |
NASA astronauts will probably launch from the US before The Winds of Winter is published Posted: 25 Apr 2018 02:38 PM PDT In this life, there are two things that are very important to me: space and the A Song of Ice and Fire series. And earlier this year, I made a fun discovery that these two subjects share a similar problem. I've been waiting the same amount of time for The Winds of Winter to come out as I have been waiting for NASA astronauts to launch from US soil again. Since this realization, I've been truly torn over which event I thought would happen first. But with the news that The Winds of Winter won't be coming out this year, I'm convinced: US rockets will again carry humans before I learn whether Aegon is really the mummer's Dragon. George R.R. Martin released the fifth book in the series, A Dance with Dragons, on July 12th, 2011 (which also... |
