Microsoft responds to e-waste recycler’s jail sentence: ‘he was counterfeiting Windows software’ Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:58 PM PDT In response to stories about the 15-month jail sentence given to Eric Lundgren, Microsoft has written a strident blog post detailing its perspective on the case. The post, titled "The facts about a recent counterfeiting case brought by the U.S. government," consists of several assertions drawn from the case itself, the email evidence that was submitted for it, and Microsoft's own take. Microsoft's corporate vice president of communication, Frank Shaw, begins by once again asserting Microsoft's support for refurbishing and recycling. But the main thrust of the post is to re-assert the findings of the court. After noting that it was the US government — not Microsoft — that brought the case, Shaw notes that Lundgren pleaded guilty. He also... |
Trump administration plans to freeze Obama-era fuel standards Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:57 PM PDT The Trump administration plans to try and freeze Obama-era fuel-efficiency standards starting in 2021 in a bid to reverse another of the former president's crowning policies aimed at combating climate change, according to a report from The Washington Post. The report, which cites a federal official who has viewed the drafted proposal, says the Trump administration would go even further by restricting a state's ability to set its own fuel standards, which would be a strike against California and its strict state-specific emissions rules. The proposal has been reportedly drafted by the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, and the plan right now is to freeze standards for cars and light trucks... |
Bill Gates pledges $12 million for universal flu vaccine research — but will it be enough? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:13 PM PDT Bill Gates has pledged $12 million in funding to fuel advances toward a universal flu vaccine, STAT News reports. After this year's devastating flu season, the race for a shot that could protect against a broad range of flu viruses for years on end feels even more urgent — but is $12 million really enough to help? Gates announced the funding today at a conference. Half would come from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the other half would be from the family of Google co-founder Larry Page. The money would be doled out in grants of up to $2 million for individual projects "that are bold and innovative," the funding website says. The idea is that... |
T-Mobile and Sprint said to be close to a $26 billion merger Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:00 PM PDT Sprint and T-Mobile are reportedly on the verge of finally agreeing on a merger, according to a report from CNBC, which claims that the two carriers are closing in on a $26 billion dollar deal as early as this Sunday. The two companies have been rumored to merge since 2014, when Sprint attempted to buy T-Mobile. Talks resumed again last year, before ending last November when T-Mobile and Sprint couldn't find mutual ground. Earlier in April, though, The Wall Street Journal reported that the two companies were once again back at the negotiating table for the third time in four years, and if CNBC's sources are correct, it seems that this time, the merger might finally be happening. The... |
Instagram might be testing a mute button and a bunch of other new features Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:42 PM PDT We might be getting an Instagram mute button and a bunch of other features, I hope. Twitter user @wongmjane posted about various tests Instagram has conducted or is currently testing. Jane Wong is apparently a computer science student who appears to be looking through the app's code. Instagram told The Verge it didn't "have anything to share on this right now," regarding the apparent tests. While they're unconfirmed for now, it's at least fun to imagine that they're legitimate and that Instagram is thinking about improving its platform with some of these changes. Let's run through all the tests Wong has supposedly uncovered. One: Reactions to stories

MoviePass is no longer too good to be true Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:15 PM PDT I've had MoviePass since September, right after the company dropped the price of its one-movie-per-day subscription to the too-good-to-be-true cost of $10 a month. Since then, dozens of friends, colleagues, and even random strangers I've run into at movie theaters have asked if it's really a good deal, and if they should sign up. My answer has always been yes, because for the right kind of moviegoer, the service offers a tremendous value. I've always known that the free ride wouldn't last forever, though. The company's business model, which has MoviePass losing money on pretty much every ticket sold, seems too unsustainable. Two changes the company has begun toying with recently make it appear MoviePass is readying to gut the core value... |
Apple is reportedly making a standalone VR and AR headset with two 8K displays Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:47 AM PDT Apple is making a VR and AR headset that would combine both technologies and use the company's proprietary chips, according to a report from CNET, citing a person familiar with the plans. The headset will reportedly arrive in 2020. There's very limited information about the headset and CNET is only citing a single source in its report. It describes a dream headset with technology that doesn't exist so far on the market. CNET says there will be an 8K display for each eye, which seems ambitious, considering the best VR headsets on the market now barely reach 4K per eye. The headset will have cameras that detect the surroundings. It's supposedly going to connect to a dedicated box through a high-speed, wireless tech called 60GHz WiGig. The... |
Amazon is now offering smart security packages with installation Posted: 27 Apr 2018 10:24 AM PDT Amazon has introduced a new portal offering home security services, as reported by TechCrunch. The portal offers an array of smart security packages that include items like entryway sensors, sirens, and a video doorbell, all installed by Amazon employees and offered with no monthly contract. There are five different tiers to choose from. The cheapest sells for $240 and is designed to create the illusion that you're home, coming with various motion-detecting lights, smart indoor lighting, and a wireless waterproof speaker. On the other end of the spectrum, the most expensive option goes for $840 and comes with items like a smart flood and leak sensor, a Wink hub, entryway sensors, and a Ring doorbell. All the packages include an Amazon... |
Intel’s 10nm Cannon Lake chips are delayed again Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:34 AM PDT Intel is once again delaying the release of its next-generation 10nm Cannon Lake processors, with mass production on the chips now expected for 2019 instead of the end of 2018 as originally planned, via Engadget. For those who haven't been keeping up with Intel's internal code names, Cannon Lake is Intel's upcoming 10nm chip architecture, and the next step from the company toward creating smaller and faster processors. Last year, when Intel first launched its eighth-generation of Core chips, the company broke from previous policy by announcing that the product lineup would consist of a mix of multiple architectures. The line launched with a revised version of the seventh-generation 14nm+ node (Kaby Lake R), and earlier this month saw... |
What to watch this weekend after Avengers: Infinity War Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:11 AM PDT There are so many streaming options available these days, and so many conflicting recommendations, that it's hard to see through all the crap you could be watching. Each Friday, The Verge's Cut the Crap column simplifies the choice by sorting through the overwhelming multitude of movies and TV shows on subscription services, and recommending a single perfect thing to watch this weekend. What to watchThe DC's Legends of Tomorrow episode "Here I Go Again." In the 11th episode of The CW series' recently completed third season, the show's time-traveling heroes get stuck in a time loop, reliving an hour of their lives which always ends with their ship exploding. Zari, the team's newest member, is the only one who retains her memories. She... |
