YouTube will reportedly release a kids’ app curated by humans

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 05:03 PM PDT

YouTube plans to release a non-algorithmic, whitelisted version of its YouTube Kids app some time in the near future as a way to avoid inadvertently suggesting questionable or graphic content to children, according to a report this evening from BuzzFeed News. The modified version of the app will also be restricted to videos from hand-selected channels that a team of human curators at YouTube will approve.

The decision, though it has yet to be officially announced, comes amid longstanding concerns over YouTube's suggestion algorithm inherently steers viewers toward increasingly extremist content. Just last month, a report from Business Insider illustrated how the YouTube Kids app was suggesting children watch videos filled with...

Microsoft will streamline Skype call recording with new Content Creator mode

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 03:02 PM PDT

Skype is finally getting a call recording feature, only 15 years after it was first released. It should be noted that Skype isn't building its own recording software but relying on third-party apps, including Xsplit, Wirecast, and Vmix. These products, among others, have allowed you to record Skype calls for years, but now it sounds as if Microsoft wants a more streamlined version.

Windows 10 and Mac users will be able to record calls if they switch their desktop Skype client over to "Content Creators" mode, a new version designed for vloggers, streamers, and podcast creators. Users can pick which third-party software they prefer to use and Skype now supports the integration. Skype envisions you can livestream a call now on your YouTube...

I’ve been ruined by Long Long Man, the greatest love story ever told by Japanese gum commercials

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 02:56 PM PDT

As we all know, candy is an extremely important part of life. Chi-chan, the star of a series of commercials by Japanese gum company Sakeru that has utterly ravaged everything I thought I knew about life, believes this deeply. She and her boyfriend Tooru-san are huge fans of Sakeru Gummy, a line of "rippable" chewing gum that comes in both short and "looong" formats. The practical, down to earth Tooru-san prefers the smaller, more traditional size of gum. Unfortunately for him, however, Chi-chan's desires are more... unconventional.

Over the years, many an American confection company has attempted to market comically large portions of chewing gum to youths. Indeed, many have done quite well; in the 1980s and '90s, Wrigley used Terry...

LG’s G7 ThinQ could launch in May with an AI button

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 02:15 PM PDT

Back in February, we got our first sneak peek of LG's next flagship phone — the LG G7, the latest in the G series — through leaked photos and specs. Today, more specs and photos of the new phone were leaked to TechRadar. And most notably, TechRadar spotted a button on the side that it points out could be dedicated to LG's AI feature.

Samsung started the trend of including a dedicated button for its smart assistant Bixby, which has been called structural bloatware. Now the TechRadar leak reveals that LG may follow suit with its own button on the left of its new LG G7 ThinQ, except it's likely for the company's AI-powered camera feature rather than a Bixby clone. LG introduced AI features on the V30S ThinQ in February, and it sounds like...

One of the biggest anime this spring is My Hero Academia, returning for its third season from animation studio Bones (Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Space Dandy, Mob Psycho 100). The superhero series is based on a comic by Kohei Horikoshi that started in 2014 in the comic anthology magazine Weekly Shonen Jump. The first volume was the second highest selling super hero graphic novel last year behind only Batman: The Killing Joke, and it's since gone global with over 13 million copies of the series in print.

What's My Hero Academia about?

In a world where most people have superpowers, middle school student Izuku Midoriya is part of 20 percent of the population born without them. But his dream is to become a superhero and to attend the...

Fortnite on iOS made $15 million in its first three weeks in the App Store

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 01:54 PM PDT

Epic Games' iOS port of smash hit Fortnite has earned more than $15 million in its first three weeks on the market, says mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower. According to the company's most recent report, Fortnite on iOS is now out-earning mobile heavyweights like Candy Crush Saga, Clash of Clans, and Pokémon Go on a weekly revenue basis, earning $6.4 million in the last seven days compared to Candy Crush Saga's $5.8 million. Granted, those games have all been out for years, with Candy Crush Saga now a six-year-old mobile game. But each game on that list has remained at the top of the App Store for years, and they've each matured into massive and stable revenue-generators. Fortnite, at least for now, is leading the pack.

NASA wants to extend Boeing’s first crewed flight to the International Space Station

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 01:34 PM PDT

An artistic rendering of Boeing's Starliner docking with the International Space Station.

Boeing's first crewed flight to the International Space Station may last a lot longer than originally planned — and the mission may have an extra crew member along for the ride, too. The company's Starliner vehicle is supposed to take NASA astronauts to the ISS for the first time later this year on a two-week trip, but the space agency is considering extending the voyage to six months. Instead of sending just a two-person crew on the spacecraft, a third astronaut could be added as well.

This would completely restructure the first crewed trip for Starliner, which was only meant to be a test flight. As part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, both Boeing and SpaceX have been developing private vehicles to transport astronauts to and from...

The feds have seized classifieds website Backpage

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 01:31 PM PDT

The United States government has seized Backpage.com, the controversial classifieds website. A notice informing visitors of the seizure was posted on the site, and a Justice Department spokesperson confirmed the notice.

According to the notice, the website and its affiliates were seized "as part of an enforcement action" by the FBI, as well as other federal and local agencies. The notice provides little other information, saying the Department of Justice will provide more soon.

Backpage was the target of allegations that it facilitated sex trafficking and prostitution through its adult section, a controversy that took years to unwind and culminated in the arrest of the company's CEO and eventual removal of the adult...

Apple tells the EPA why cutting the Clean Power Plan is a bad move

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 12:19 PM PDT

A coal-fired power plant in Baltimore, Maryland.

Apple is pushing back against the Environmental Protection Agency's proposal to repeal the Clean Power Plan. The company filed a public comment with the EPA today arguing that scrapping the policy, which calls for cutting power plant pollution, would dull the United States' competitive edge in the clean energy economy.

Apple's comment on the repeal proposal is the first one from a company, according to Reuters. In a copy of the filing that Apple shared with The Verge, Apple calls the fight against climate change a "moral and environmental imperative that also makes good business sense."

The Clean Power Plan (or CPP) was finalized by the Obama administration, and it takes aim at power plants — the number one carbon polluters in the US, a...

Twitter postpones platform change that would cut off third-party apps

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 01:32 PM PDT

The people behind third-party Twitter clients Tweetbot, Twitterrific, Talon, and Tweetings are warning users that their apps could lose important features like push notifications and an auto-refresh timeline in June. The problem is that after June 19th, Twitter will be removing the "streaming services" that have enabled developers to implement these functions in their apps.

Update 4:30PM ET: However, we don't know exactly when this change will come. In response to the furor on Twitter, the company has announced it is "delaying the scheduled June 19th deprecation date." In a thread, the developer relations account further said the company it "will provide at least 90 days notice from when the Account Activity API becomes generally...
