How to Personalize Pens Posted: 20 Apr 2018 01:00 AM PDT Brighten up dull pens by personalizing them with a few colorful art supplies. You can make a neon pen by drawing a design on a colorful piece of printer paper. Pom-poms add flair to pens colored with yarn and tape. If you're ambitious, try constructing a flower pen with its own flower pot. If you don't want to make your own pens, you can always order some from a design company. Personalized pens are fun to keep, but they also make for great gifts. EditCreating Colorful Pens - Use clear pens that you can open. Since you will need to put the paper inside the pen, choose pens that have a clear body. Blue and black ballpoint pens tend to work well and you can usually find packs of these pens at dollar stores or general stores. Make sure they have an end you can pull out or unscrew to take them apart.[1]
- Print a design on decorative paper. Visit an office supply store to choose some colored printer paper. You can use a computer program like PowerPoint or Photoshop to create a design to fit inside the pens. This can be anything, such as a repeating pattern of lines, shapes, or even a custom-designed graphic.[2]
- You can make pens with your name on them, for instance. Instead of printing a design, print or write your name on the paper. Try using a custom stamp.
- You can also draw a design on the paper. Colorful markers or gel pens can make your design stand out more.
- Cut the design paper into strips that fit inside your pen. Use scissors to break your design down into thin strips you can fit inside your pen. An approximate size is about long and wide. This creates enough strips for a whole pack of pens.[3]
- You can use a desktop paper cutter to cleanly cut the paper. Be careful when handling the sharp blade and keep your fingers away from it.
- Remove the pen's end cap to take out the ink tube. Pry of the end caps on the clear ballpoint pens with your fingernails. If you can't remove the cap or the ink container, you may need to unscrew the other end of the pen by twisting it counterclockwise. Slide the ink tube out of the pen's casing.
- For retractable pens, you usually do need to unscrew the pen's front end. Set the spring aside in a safe spot for now.
- Roll the paper around the ink tube. Take a strip of paper, then wrap it around the ink tube. Make sure the design is facing outward. Smooth the paper down into a tight, flat roll around the ink tube.[4]
- Put the pen back together. First, place the ink tube roll inside the pen. The paper should fit in there without any problem. Next, close the pen's ends by replacing the end cap. You should be able to admire your awesome design through the plastic casing.
- If the paper doesn't fit inside the chamber, it may not be flat enough. Remove it, then try rolling it around the ink tube again. Cut the strip more if you need to.
EditMaking a Pom-Pom Pen - Purchase pens without side clips. Smooth plastic pens work best, although you can use any pen if it doesn't have a plastic clip. If your pen has a plastic clip, you may be able to break the clip off to decorate the pen. Pull it back and it should snap off without much trouble.
- Wrap yarn around the bottom third of the pen. Choose a roll of yarn in a color you like. Wrap the loose end above the triangular cap containing the pen's nib. Depending on your pen, this may be plastic or metal. Then, wrap the yard around the pen repeatedly until it reaches about ⅓ of the way up the pen and knot it in place.[5]
- Measure the amount of fabric tape needed to wrap around the pen. You can find rolls of fabric tape at most craft supply stores. Pick a pattern you like, then measure the amount of tape you need by comparing it to your pen's size. You need enough tape to cover the remaining ⅔ of the pen.[6]
- You can use a ruler to measure the length and width of your pen.
- Instead of using tape, you can wrap more yarn or twine around the rest of the pen.
- Cut the tape to size. Cut the length of tape you need according to your measurements earlier. You will most likely need to cut a second, equal length of tape, since most tapes aren't wide enough to completely cover the pen.[7]
- To see if you have enough tape, wrap the pieces of tape around the pen. Avoid peeling back the adhesive backing until you're ready to apply the tape.
- Wrap the tape around the pen. Lay the pen in front of you, then cover the exposed top side of the pen with the tape. Peel off the backing, wrap the tape around the pen, and press it flat with your fingers. Flip the pen over and finish covering it by applying the second piece of tape.[8]
- Spread some craft glue over the pen's end cap. Get some craft glue from the craft supply store. Spread the glue over the pen's back end using a foam brush. Apply only a thin layer so it doesn't drip.[9]
- If your pen has a clicker at the end, make sure it is up. Use the glue sparingly to avoid getting the clicker stuck.
- Glue a pom-pom to the pen's end. Pick out a colorful pom-pom at the craft supply store as well. Spread a little glue on one side, then press it against the glue-covered end of your pen. It should stick in place right away, but it's a good idea to set the pen aside for at least 3 minutes to let the glue dry. Then go test out your fancy pen![10]
- If your pom-pom won't stick, try tying some yarn to it. Knot the other end of the yarn around the pen, then glue the pom-pom in place.
EditCreating a Flower Pen - Pull the end cap and ink tube out of the pen. You will need a clear, plastic pen. Ballpoint pens work best, but check to make sure you can open them from the back. The end cap covers the pen's back, blunt end. You can pry this piece out with your finger. Set it aside, then slide the ink tube out through the opening.[11]
- If you can't remove the end cap, you may be able to pry it off using a knife. Be careful and keep the blade pointed away from you.
- Spread some super glue around the pen's tip. Start at the pen's open end. Place a small dot of super glue directly on the plastic, near the rim. Avoid getting any glue inside the pen.
- You can find the super glue, pipe cleaner, and other supplies at a craft supply store.
- Wrap green pipe cleaner around the pen. Curl the pipe cleaner around the pen's rim. Twist it as tightly as possible around the pen's case. Make sure you press the pipe cleaner into the glue.
- Instead of pipe cleaner, you can use green floral tape. Wrap it tightly around the pen. You won't need glue for this.[12]
- Continue wrapping and gluing the pipe cleaner to the pen. Twist the pipe cleaner down and around the pen in a tight spiral. Cover the plastic completely. Every time you bring the pipe cleaner around the pen, add a drop of glue underneath it.
- Glue a pair of plastic leaves to the pen if you want. For some extra decoration, give your flower pen a few plastic leaves. Place them above the pen's nib, near the bottom of the pipe cleaner. Add a drop of glue to the leaves, then push them between the pipe cleaner. Position 1 on each side of the pen.[13]
- Cut a plastic flower to fit on top of the pen. Pick out a stylish plastic flower you like. You can find a bunch of different varieties at craft stores. Carefully snip off the stem using scissors or a wire cutter. Leave a little bit of stem on the flower's base to fit inside the pen.[14]
- You may need to cut off more later. Place the flower in the pen's opening to check this before you glue it in place.
- You can also glue the flower onto the side of the pen. Push it into the pipe cleaner like you did with the leaves.
- Glue the flower to the pen and let it dry for 30 minutes. Spread a thin layer of super glue around the flower's base. Set it on top of the pen, pushing the stem down into the opening. Then, set the pen aside in a safe location. Wait at least 30 minutes for it to dry.[15]
- To fit the flower more securely, try a hot glue gun. Spread a thin layer of glue around the flower's stem, then press it into the opening.
- Fit Styrofoam into a round container. Find a round container, such as a pencil holder, a coffee can, or mason jar. You also need a piece of Styrofoam that fits snugly inside the container. Buy this at a craft supply store, then push it down into the container.
- If the Styrofoam doesn't fit, cut it to size using an X-Acto knife or box cutter.
- Instead of Styrofoam, you could fill the container with river rocks.[16]
- Stick the pen in the container. Push the pen's tip into the Styrofoam. If you push it down far enough, the pen will stay standing after you let go of it. You may need to push it down a little more to make it perfect, but you now have a beautiful flower pen you can use anytime.
- Make a garden by decorating the container further. Try gluing leaves to toothpicks and placing them in your container to create grass.
EditOrdering Personalized Pens - Find a place that prints customized pens. Search for personalized pens online to quickly find many companies that let you design and print your own pens. You may also be able to find printing services in your area if you want to place your order in person.[17]
- Choose a style of pen you want. Browse around the print company websites to see what pen styles are available. Most places usually offer a few options, including regular ballpoint pens and fancier engraved pens. Select a type of pen to begin personalizing the design.
- Engraved pens usually include your name or a company name. Ballpoint pens can have a printed logo or image.
- Customize your pen's design. Decide what you want displayed on the pen. This can be your name, a company's name, or even a small image. Select one of the templates available, then type in the information you want displayed on the pen. Use the tools to change the font color, size, and other aspects.[18]
- You can customize a pen design from scratch. You can also send the company your own design for printing.
- Finish ordering the pens. Review your design and finalize it when you're happy with it. Confirm your order by indicating how many pens you want. Submit your shipping address and payment information to complete the order.
- You may need to place a minimum order, such as 100 pens, before your pens can be made. This information will be displayed on the company's website before you place your order.
- Have fun! Get creative and use lots of different materials to make unique pens.
- These pens can be customized and given as gifts.

How to Dye over a Dark Hair Dye Posted: 19 Apr 2018 05:00 PM PDT If you try to apply color over hair that's already been dyed, it's only going to get darker. To dye over a dark hair dye, you'll first need to lighten your current hair color. You can do this by lifting the color using special shampoos or color removers — this method will work for lightening your hair color just a few shades. For a more drastic color change, you can use bleach, making sure to use extra caution so that your hair doesn't become super damaged. EditLifting the Color a Few Shades - Wash your hair using a clarifying shampoo. A clarifying shampoo will help reduce the intensity of the dark color, but this will only slightly lift it, not completely remove the color. Shampoo your hair with the clarifying shampoo at least twice in the shower for the best results.[1]
- If your hair wasn't colored recently, this may not have a huge effect on lightening your hair.
- Apply heat to your shampooed hair for better results. If desired, you can get out of the shower and use a hair dryer to heat up the clarifying shampoo on your head before rinsing it out. This will help your hair cuticles open up to release even more color. [2]
- Tie your hair up with a hair clip and put on a shower cap. Heat your shampooed hair with a hair dryer for about 1 minute.
- Be careful not to melt the plastic of the shower cap, and never use the hair dryer in the shower.
- Spray lemon juice or Sun-in on your hair to lighten the color. Use a bottle of Sun-in or a fresh lemon to spray lemon juice all over your hair. Use a brush to spread the liquid evenly throughout your hair, and use a hair dryer or the sun to create the desired effect.[3]
- The more heat you apply to your hair while it has the spray in it, the lighter your hair will become.
- You can do this process multiple times, but don't be surprised if your hair doesn't lighten as much as you would like.
- Your hair may feel dry after using lemon juice. Condition your hair with a moisturizing conditioner to hydrate it.
- Lift the color with a color remover or lightener. Color removers will help strip your hair of the dye so that you can start to return to your natural color. Color removers can be a bit harsh on your hair, so try to use them sparingly and read the directions carefully to ensure you use the color remover properly.[4]
- Condition your hair deeply after you've used a color remover.
- Try to wait a couple of months before using a color remover a second time to keep your hair from becoming damaged. However, some color removers are safe to use immediately after one use. Check the package to be sure, and consider the condition of your hair as well.
- These products can be found at many drug stores or beauty supply stores, as well as online.
EditBleaching Your Hair - Deep condition your hair before bleaching it. Try using a deep conditioning mask on your hair a week or 2 before bleaching it, conditioning it several times. This will help strengthen and rejuvenate your hair, getting it ready for the bleaching process.[5]
- Protect your work surfaces, clothing, and skin. Do the bleaching in a place that will be easy to clean up and wipe down, like a bathroom or kitchen. Wear clothing that you don't mind getting ruined and a towel around your shoulders. Wear gloves so that the bleach won't damage your hands.
- It's best to use a white towel or a towel you don't mind getting bleach on.
- Mix bleach with a developer to start bleaching your hair. Purchase a bleach kit for your hair, which will most likely also require a developer. Mix the bleach and developer together in a bowl, reading the instructions carefully to determine the exact measurements.[6]
- A 20- or 30-volume developer will be best for your hair.
- Divide your hair into sections to make bleaching easier. Tie up the top layer of your hair using a hair tie or plastic clip so that you can easily reach the bottom layer. If you have really thick hair, you can separate the bottom layer of hair into 2 or 3 additional sections using plastic hair clips.
- Make sure that you only use plastic clips when you are bleaching your hair.
- Apply the bleach evenly to your hair, doing your roots last. Use an applicator brush to apply the mixed bleach to strands of your hair evenly. The bleach kit should provide you with the best strategy for bleaching your hair, but make sure you apply bleach to your roots last.[7]
- Your roots heat up the fastest, so if you bleach your roots first they will turn lighter than the rest of your hair.
- Wear gloves over your hands and a towel around your neck to keep the bleach from damaging your hands or clothing.
- Wrap your hair up and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. Use a shower cap to keep the bleach settled on top of your hair, allowing the heat from your head to remain trapped in the cap. Most bleaches will stay on your hair for 20-30 minutes, but keep checking your hair to see how the color is turning out.[8]
- You shouldn't leave bleach in your hair for more than 1 hour.
- Rinse the bleach out carefully after the allotted time is up. Once the 20-30 minutes are up, or if you decide you like the color of your hair before that time, rinse the bleach out with clean water. Shampoo and condition your hair afterwards.[9]
- Wait 2-3 months before bleaching your hair again to avoid damage. Bleach can be very rough on your hair, especially if you're going from a dark color to a light one. To prevent your hair from breaking off or becoming brittle, wait 2-3 months before bleaching your hair again if it didn't get as light as desired the first time.[10]
- You can also deep condition your hair again to help keep it healthy in between bleaching sessions.
EditApplying the New Color - Pick out a hair color that will complement your skin tone. Choose a hair dye that will look good on you and your current hair color. Make sure you've gotten your hair light enough so that it will accept the new hair color.[11]
- When choosing a new color, opt for a dye that's 1 or 2 shades lighter than what you're actually going for. When you dye your hair at home it often comes out darker than you anticipated.
- Mix your chosen hair color with a developer. Many times your hair dye kit will come with the developer, but if not, pick up a 20-volume developer from a drug store. Follow the instructions that come with your hair dye to mix the dye with the developer proportionally.
- You can also purchase developer at a big box store, beauty store, or online.
- Separate your hair into sections to make dyeing your hair easier. Pull together the top layer of your hair and secure it with a hair tie or clip. Divide the bottom layer into 2-4 sections for thicker hair.[12]
- If your hair is thin, you can easily dye the bottom layer of your hair without sectioning it off.
- Use the applicator brush to apply the dye to your hair. Just like you did with the bleach, use the dye applicator brush to apply the dye to sections of hair. Remember to do your roots last.[13]
- Make sure your shoulders are covered to protect your clothing, and wear gloves to protect your hands from the dye.
- You can tie your hair up and put a shower cap on once your hair is covered in dye, if desired.
- Read the dye instructions to know how long to leave the dye in your hair. Each color and brand of hair dye will have different instructions, so read them carefully to determine how long you should leave the dye in your hair before rinsing it out.[14]
- Use a timer to ensure you leave the dye in long enough to have the desired effect.
- Don't leave the dye in longer than the allotted time on the box — it may damage your hair or skin.
- Rinse the dye out after the allotted time is up. Once your timer has gone off or the time is up, rinse the dye out of your hair under cool running water. You can use a shampoo and conditioner appropriate for colored hair to get rid of any extra dye residue.[15]
- Once the water runs clear, you'll know the hair dye has been washed out.
- Professionals will have the best method for coloring hair that's already dark, so visit a salon if you're able to.

How to Make Baked Oatmeal Posted: 19 Apr 2018 09:00 AM PDT There are a lot of ways to make oatmeal. Most common is cooking it in the microwave or on the stove, but did you know that you can bake oatmeal in the oven too? Unlike cooked or microwaved oatmeal, baked oatmeal has a firmer texture, making it easy to cut and serve on a plate. It is perfect if you have to make a lot of food for a lot of people. EditIngredients - 3 cups (300 grams) old fashioned oats
- 1½ teaspoon (7.5 grams) baking powder
- 2 teaspoons (10 grams) ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon (1.25 grams) ground nutmeg (optional)
- ½ teaspoon (2.5 grams) salt
- ½ to ¾ cup (100 to 150 grams) brown sugar
- 2½ cups (596 milliliters) milk
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) vanilla extract
- 4 tablespoons (60 grams) unsalted butter, melted
Optional - 2 to 3 large apples, peeled, cored and diced
- 2 cups (200 grams) fresh berries
EditBaked Oatmeal Cups[3] - 3 cups (300 grams) old fashioned oats
- 2 teaspoons (10 grams) baking powder
- 1 tablespoon (15 grams) ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon (2.5 grams) salt
- 1 cup (200 grams) packed brown sugar
- 1½ cups (360 milliliters) milk
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons (10 milliliters) vanilla extract
- ¼ cup (60 milliliters) canola or vegetable oil
- ½ cup (60 grams) applesauce (or ½ banana, sliced)
EditBasic Baked Oatmeal - Preheat the oven to 350°F (176.7°C).
- Lightly grease a glass baking dish, and set it aside. Try to get something that is around 8 by 12 inches (20.32 by 30.48 centimeters) or 9 by 13 inches (22.86 by 33.02 centimeters).[4]
- Mix together the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Measure out the old fashioned oats, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and brown sugar. For extra flavor, add some ground nutmeg. Put everything into a large bowl, and mix together until evenly combined.
- In a separate container, whisk together the milk, eggs, and vanilla. You can use another bowl, or a large, glass measuring cup. Beat everything together until the yolks break, and you get an even color. There should be no streaks or swirls.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture, then sir in the melted butter. Keep stirring with a whisk or spatula until everything is evenly combined.
- Pour half of the oatmeal mixture into the baking dish, then top with your desired filling. Popular choices include berries or apples. You can also use 2 cups (200 grams) worth of other ingredients as well, such as chopped nuts or bananas.
- Pour the rest of the oatmeal mixture over your filling. Gently sway the baking dish from side to side. This will help spread your mixture evenly across the baking dish, and help everything settle.
- Bake, uncovered, for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown. The oats should be set; they should not jiggle much when you move them.
- Let cool for a few minutes, then cut and serve. For extra flavor, drizzle some milk or honey over the oatmeal. You can also top it with ground cinnamon or raisins. If you end up having any leftovers, put them into the refrigerator.
- Finished.
EditMaking Baked Oatmeal Cups - Preheat the oven to 350°F (176.7°C).
- Line a large muffin tin with muffin liners. You can use paper or foil liners. This will make it easier to remove the oatmeal cups later on.
- Mix together the eggs and oil in a large bowl. Keep mixing until the yolks break. You can use a fork or whisk for this.
- Stir in the brown sugar. Keep stirring until the brown sugar dissolves. There should be no streaks or swirls of egg yolk.
- Add the applesauce, cinnamon, milk, salt, and vanilla, and stir until evenly combined. If you don't like apple sauce, you can add un half of a sliced up banana instead.[5]
- Stir in the old fashioned olds and baking powder. At this point, try to use a "rolling" motion, so that you are bringing all of the ingredients from the bottom of the bowl to the top. This will help ensure that everything mixes in together evenly. When you are done, there should be no streak or swirls.
- Fill each muffin liner with ¼ cup (60 milliliters) of the mixture. If you'd like, you can add some toppings, such as raisins, peeled and chopped apples, berries, or ground cinnamon. Use a spoon to press the toppings into the oatmeal.[6]
- Bake the oatmeal cups for 30 minutes. The oatmeal should be firm and golden on top.
- Let the oatmeal cups cool before you serve them. This will take about 5 minutes. They are perfect for eating on the go, if you are in a hurry to work or school. If you have any leftover, you can store them in the freezer in plastic sandwich bags.[7]
- If you don't have any old fashioned oats on hands, try rolled oats; they are almost the same type
- If the oatmeal is too firm after you bake it, soften it with a teaspoon of water or milk.[8]
- Consider adding a variety of fruits to the baked oatmeal for more flavor.
