North Korea says that it will dismantle its nuclear test site this month Posted: 12 May 2018 11:47 AM PDT North Korea's official news agency has reported that the country has scheduled the demolition of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site ahead of talks with the United States next month. Reuters reports that official Korean Central New Agency says that the site will be decommissioned between May 23rd and 25th, which would include "collapsing all of its tunnels with explosions, blocking its entrances," and shutting down all of its observation and security facilities. The announcement comes ahead of scheduled talks between US President Donald Trump and DPRK Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June 12th. State media says that foreign journalists will be invited to witness the decommissioning. In April, North Korea said that it would p... |
We can’t forget about mass transit when we talk about the ‘future of transportation’ Posted: 12 May 2018 11:00 AM PDT Maybe it was the smell of oil and machined metal coming from the jetpack on stage, or maybe it was because I was listening to the 10th different speaker in under three hours. But I was a little dizzy by the end of the Wall Street Journal's Future of Transportation event that took place on Wednesday in Manhattan. When I got back out on the street and cleared my head, though, the first thing I thought to myself was: "wait a minute, did no one really talk about the future of public transportation?" Don't get me wrong, it was an engaging morning full of bright minds with relative disciplinary diversity (gender not so much — there were just two women guest speakers to eight men), ranging from space exploration to the aforementioned jetpack... |
The unexpected catharsis of an Instagram location page Posted: 12 May 2018 10:00 AM PDT At some point in your adult life, birthdays become less about cakes and presents, and instead about that time of year when you feel existential dread about getting older. But it's not often my own birthdays that trigger thoughts about complexities of aging, but the ones that remind me about life itself. My father was born on May 12th. Today he would have turned 56, had he not passed away in 1996. When I was in college, my family and I would visit our motherland in Bangkok over the summer break in May, and our tradition was to always visit the temple where my dad's ashes resided. To let him know we'd come home. We would leave a phuang malai (flower garland) by his burial site and try to find the monk who officiated his funeral so we could... |
A new documentary will explore the life and legacy of Ursula K. Le Guin Posted: 12 May 2018 09:24 AM PDT In January, science fiction and fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin died at the age of 88, leaving behind an incredible body of work that has inspired generations of writers and readers. Le Guin is the subject of a forthcoming documentary by Arwen Curry, who just released a new trailer for the project. Curry kickstarted Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin in 2016, and has been working on the project ever since. Earlier this week, she released a trailer for the documentary, which will use archival footage and recent interviews with Le Guin to examine her life and the impact of her career. The film will also feature interviews from authors such as Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid's Tale), Neil Gaiman (American Gods), Theodora Goss (The Strange Case of... |
New trailers: The Predator, Luke Cage, 13 Reasons Why, and more Posted: 12 May 2018 09:00 AM PDT Last week I finally got around to seeing Last Flag Flying now that it's streaming on Amazon. It's Richard Linklater's latest film, and while I'm a huge fan of his stuff, trailers for Last Flag Flying didn't exactly make me feel like I had to leave my warm apartment in November to make it out to a movie theater to see it right away. I did enjoy it, though. And the movie makes a ton of sense coming from Linklater — much of the film is extended sequences of people talking in bars, in cars, on trains, musing over their lives, politics, and how people behave. Linklater is so good at making this stuff work that, even though the characters start as big, broad archetypes, it quickly begins to feel much more intimate. One thing I thought was... |
YouTube Red has ordered a second season of Cobra Kai Posted: 12 May 2018 08:48 AM PDT YouTube Red jumped on the remake bandwagon last fall with a series order for a Karate Kid sequel called Cobra Kai. The 10-episode first season debuted earlier this month on the paid service, and earlier this week, YouTube revealed that it was renewing the show for a second season. The show follows Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) when he reopens the Cobra Kai karate dojo and restarts his rivalry with Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), picking up 30 years after the events of the original 1984 film. Like the first, the second season will contain 10, 30-minute episodes, and will debut on YouTube Red sometime in 2019. |
Last minute Mother’s Day gifts, discounts on laptops, and an iPhone X bundle Posted: 12 May 2018 08:00 AM PDT It's Mother's Day weekend! Hopefully you got your mom something already, but if you're still looking for a last-minute Mother's Day gift, Sony discounted their gorgeous glass speaker for the occasion. It was designed for Sony's Life Space UX series of products, which focuses on aesthetically pleasing gadgets that blend in with your home decor. The Glass Sound Speaker is very pretty, with a glass cylinder that not only pushes out sound in a more natural-sounding frequency, but also glows like a lantern with a dimmable LED. Sony is offering $100 off the $800 speaker on Amazon, just in time for Mother's Day. The Walmart-owned discount e-commerce site Jet.com recently started selling Apple products. To celebrate, they're offering l... |
Apple Music and Pandora have pulled R. Kelly’s music from curated playlists Posted: 12 May 2018 07:44 AM PDT On Thursday, Spotify announced that it would begin to refrain from promoting artists it deemed performing "hate content" or "demonstrate hateful conduct personally" on its company-curated playlists. This includes artist R. Kelly, who has been accused over the years of sexual misconduct. Pandora and Apple Music have now taken similar steps to deemphasize artists. Pitchfork reported that Apple quietly began to pull R. Kelly from some of its curated playlists prior to Spotify's announcement in light of renewed reports about his behavior from a number of women. However, other artists, like XXXTentacion, who was also pulled from Spotify's playlists, remains on Apple's promoted playlists. Similarly, Pandora has reportedly been working for... |
This week in tech, 20 years ago Posted: 12 May 2018 07:00 AM PDT As a person who covers day-to-day technology news, I often wonder how my writing might come off to someone in the future — and whether anyone will even be reading it. I can't answer those questions, but I can do the next best thing: look back at what other people were writing 20 years ago. Here are five stories — big and small — that science and tech enthusiasts might have checked out during the week before May 12th, 1998. Say hello to iMacIf you follow tech news, you might already know that Apple's colorful original iMac turned 20 years old last weekend. You can find some modern perspectives on it in a Twitter moment, an Engadget retrospective, and a story from MacWorld about its original 1998 iMac feature. Back in May of 1998, you'd... |
Are cotton totes better for the Earth than plastic bags? It depends on what you care about Posted: 12 May 2018 06:00 AM PDT A year or so ago, I decided to start using less plastic. I bought an insulated water bottle for my morning coffee, as well as bee's wax wraps to replace cellophane, and I largely stopped putting my groceries in plastic bags. Instead, I switched to cotton tote bags. I felt really good about myself, until I saw a report published earlier this year by Denmark's Ministry of Environment and Food that said that plastic bags are better for the environment than organic cotton tote bags. In fact, of all the shopping bags the study looked at — from paper to recycled plastic — cotton tote bags fared the worst: they need to be reused thousands of times to have the same environmental footprint as a lightweight plastic bag, according to the report. A... |
