Hawaii’s erupting volcano is still going, and now it’s a threat to passing planes too

Posted: 16 May 2018 05:10 PM PDT

The plume of ash rising from Kilauea's summit.

A massive plume of ash rising from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano prompted a warning yesterday to pilots planning to fly over the area. The eruption isn't just dangerous to people on the ground anymore — it could also bring down planes.

Kilauea has been spurting lava, molten rock, and poisonous gases from multiple massive fissures on the island of Hawaii since May 3rd. On Tuesday morning, the Halema'uma'u crater on Kilauea's summit also began continuously gushing ash — creating a plume that rose up to 10,000 feet in the air. Rocks falling into the vent may be responsible for more intense ash spurts. But that's not even the worst of it, the US Geological Survey warned: "At any time, activity may become more explosive, increasing the intensity...

Tesla crash involving Autopilot prompts federal investigation

Posted: 16 May 2018 04:50 PM PDT

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating a Tesla Model S crash that may have involved the electric car maker's semi-autonomous Autopilot software, according to Reuters. The crash took place last week in Utah, and photos of the totaled Model S made headlines around the country, despite the driver walking away with only a broken ankle.

The driver, a 28-year-old woman who has not been identified, told police she was driving 60 mph at the time, had Autiopilot engaged, and was looking at her phone with her hands off the steering wheel up until right before the crash occurred. She rear ended a fire truck at a red light, according to police. However, it is not yet clear whether the NHTSA is investigating the crash...

Trump’s plan to privatize the ISS by 2025 probably won’t work, NASA’s inspector general says

Posted: 16 May 2018 04:00 PM PDT

The Trump Administration's plan to hand the International Space Station off to the private sector by 2025 probably won't work, says a government auditor. It's unlikely that any commercial companies will be able to take on the enormous costs of operating the ISS within the next six years, the auditor said.

NASA's inspector general, Paul Martin, laid out his concerns over the space station's transition during a Senate space subcommittee hearing May 16th, helmed by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL). During his testimony, Martin said that there's just no "sufficient business case" for space companies to take on the ISS's yearly operations costs, which are expected to reach $1.2 billion in 2024. The industries that would need...

Twitter is going to make third-party apps worse starting in August

Posted: 16 May 2018 03:37 PM PDT

Twitter has long had a strange disdain for third-party Twitter apps, but it's allowed many of them to pass under the radar for the last several years. That's starting to change this summer, when Twitter will revoke a key piece of access that developers currently have to the service, replacing it with a new access system that limits what they can do. The changes aren't going to make third-party Twitter clients useless, but they are going to make the apps somewhat worse.

The changes, which go into effect August 16th, do two main things: first, they prevent new tweets from streaming into an app in real time; and second, they prevent and delay some push notifications. Neither of these are going to break Twitter apps completely, but they...

Here’s a $4,500 iPhone X with a solar charger on the back

Posted: 16 May 2018 02:51 PM PDT

A Russian accessory maker named Caviar has started selling a solar-powered version of the iPhone X going for $4,500. Caviar is branding the phone the iPhone X "Tesla" and it initially announced its plans back in November, as spotted by AppleInsider.

Since Caviar makes neither iPhones nor Teslas, the iPhone X Tesla's functions aren't built directly into the device. Instead, the iPhone X Tesla is actually a pretty thick phone case that attaches directly onto the device, with a solar panel on the back that powers a secondary battery for additional juice. Caviar claims the case has IP67 water and dust resistance.

Caviar's first unit of the iPhone X Tesla case has the engraving, "Made on Earth by Humans," in honor of when Elon Musk sent a...

Onkyo’s receivers will work with Sonos, thanks to upcoming June firmware update

Posted: 16 May 2018 01:22 PM PDT

Thanks to a firmware update coming to a plethora of receivers from Onkyo and its brands — Integra, Pioneer, and Pioneer Elite — they will all work with the Sonos app. The official list of supported network AV, stereo receivers, and processors will be announced in early June along with the firmware update and availability.

This power move is the result of the "Works With Sonos" initiative, which allows third-party manufacturers like Onkyo to not only mimic a Sonos speaker but also interact via mixing or creating groups, syncing with the Sonos app without requiring a hub.

For example, you could integrate your older Onkyo hardware with the Sonos app alongside any other Sonos-compatible hardware you have to create a better, higher-fidelity...

Senate votes to reinstate net neutrality — but it has a long way to go

Posted: 16 May 2018 12:55 PM PDT

The Senate has voted to save net neutrality, but don't get your hopes up: there's still a long, likely impossible journey ahead if the policy is to be saved in the immediate future.

In a 52–47 vote today, senators voted to overturn the Federal Communication Commission's Restoring Internet Freedom Order, which took net neutrality rules off the books. They were able to do so using the Congressional Review Act, or CRA, which allows Congress to reverse recent decisions by government agencies. Republican control of Congress means that such a measure wouldn't normally even make it up for a vote; but the CRA allows senators to force a vote by obtaining 30 signatures.

All 49 Democrats voted in favor, as well as Republican Senators Susan Collins,...

Didi, ride-sharing giant of China, overhauls service after passenger is killed

Posted: 16 May 2018 12:54 PM PDT

While Uber is still reeling from the fatal crash involving one of its self-driving cars, the ride-sharing company's Chinese rival is grappling with its own tragic death. Didi Chuxing announced today that it would be revamping its app after a passenger was raped and killed by her driver.

The passenger, 21-year-old flight attendant Li Mingzhu, was found dead on Saturday after hailing a car from Didi in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou, according to state media. Police are still searching for the Didi driver, surnamed Liu, who abandoned his vehicle and jumped into a river after allegedly killing Li.

Didi has faced a growing outcry from passengers in recent days, especially from women who complain that the app...

The line between food and medicine is blurrier than ever — and the FDA needs to step up its game

Posted: 16 May 2018 12:23 PM PDT

Is tea medicine? What about special Collagen Beautèa that promises to support your bones? This week, The Wall Street Journal reported on the growing popularity of foods and beverages enhanced with collagen, an ingredient used in wrinkle cream that hasn't really been proven to be helpful when you eat it. The line between "food" and "medicine" has always been blurry, and, traditionally, the US Food and Drug Administration only regulates the latter. But as people start chasing foods with more fanciful health promises, it's time that the FDA takes a closer look before we waste our dollars and endanger our health.

Though collagen is a protein found in bones, it is most commonly known for being an ingredient in skin cream, often to prevent...
