Microsoft’s new Halo arcade game lives inside a giant coin-operated machine Posted: 17 May 2018 04:31 PM PDT It's not quite the Halo 6 that many Xbox fans are hoping to see at E3 this year, but Microsoft is revealing a new Halo game today. Halo: Fireteam Raven is an arcade version of Microsoft's popular first-person shooter, and it's housed inside a giant coin-operated arcade machine. 343 Industries, Raw Thrills, and PlayMechanix have all teamed up to bring this arcade version of Halo to life, with a 130-inch 4K screen that lets up to four players fight Covenant enemies, vehicles, and spaceships. Halo: Fireteam Raven is set in the timeframe of the original Halo: Combat Evolved. Fireteam Raven are a group of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODST) and they fight alongside Master Chief and the UNSC against Covenant forces. Arcade players will be able... |
Apple shipped an estimated 600,000 HomePods in the first quarter of the year Posted: 17 May 2018 03:40 PM PDT Apple shipped 600,000 HomePods in the first quarter of 2018, according to a new sales estimates from market research firm Strategy Analytics. With those sales, the firm says Apple should have around a 6 percent share of the market, which puts it far behind Amazon and Google and just below Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. According to the estimates, Amazon captured 43.6 percent of the smart speaker market with 4 million unit sales, while Google 26.5 percent with 2.4 million sales. There are a few grains of salt here. The HomePod didn't go on sale until February 9th, so Apple didn't have the full quarter, which ended on March 31st, to rack up sales. These are also just estimates, as Apple has released full figures and we don't know for... |
Valve’s PC game streaming service Steam Link launches in beta on Android Posted: 17 May 2018 03:16 PM PDT Valve announced earlier this month that its Steam Link game streaming service would be coming to mobile by the end of May, and now we have a beta version on Android to play around with. The app is live on Google's Play Store starting today, and it will let you stream full PC games via Steam so long as the smartphone is connected to a nearby PC through a 5GHz Wi-Fi network and the PC is connected directly to your router with an ethernet connection. For now, it seems that you won't be able to use Steam Link over LTE. You'll be able to play games on mobile using the Steam Controller and presumably any other Bluetooth gamepad device, which includes the Xbox One controller and other Android-compatible devices. (Valve hasn't yet released a... |
The creators of the Boosted board have launched an electric scooter sharing service Posted: 17 May 2018 02:52 PM PDT Electric scooter (and bike) sharing services have inundated West Coast cities like Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and San Francisco over the last few months. Despite some complaints, and some vandalism, it's only a matter of time before they make it out East, en masse, too. One of the first companies to give that a shot launched today in Washington, DC. It's called Skip, and it was started by Sanjay Dastoor and Matt Tran, the same pair who created the Boosted board. The battery on Skip's scooters lasts about 30 miles, and they have a top speed of around 18 miles per hour. Skip works like most other dockless scooter sharing services: you find a free scooter using the Skip app, scan a code to unlock it, and take off. Skip charges a dollar per... |
Lando Calrissian’s newfound ‘pansexuality’ is bullshit Posted: 17 May 2018 02:07 PM PDT Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian is quick, charming, and — according to Solo co-writer Jonathan Kasdan — pansexual. In an interview with HuffPost, Kasdan said there's a "fluidity" to both Glover and Billy Dee Williams' portrayals of the beloved character. "I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie," Kasdan says. "I think it's time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of." While GLAAD defines pansexuality as attraction "to all gender identities, or [attraction] to people regardless of gender," in this case, Kasdan is applying it over-generously. The film's trailers have prompted discussion over... |
Fully driverless cars are on public roads in Texas Posted: 17 May 2018 12:21 PM PDT Drive.ai, a self-driving startup based in California, is operating fully driverless vehicles without safety drivers on public roads in Frisco, a suburb outside Dallas-Forth Worth, the company announced this week. The tests are in the run-up to the company's planned autonomous ride-hailing service, which is scheduled to launch later this summer. It's a major milestone for the scrappy startup, which can now claim the distinction of being only the second company to experiment with driverless vehicles on public roads in the US. In a video provided by Drive.ai, the company's self-driving Nissan NV200 is seen crossing six lanes of traffic, passing cyclists and pedestrians, entering a roundabout, and even navigating through low-angle sunlight... |
The CX Sport is an athletic alternative to Sennheiser’s wireless earbuds Posted: 17 May 2018 12:09 PM PDT The CX Sport are Sennheiser's latest wireless headphones, joining the CX 6.00BT and HD1 Free (which I just compared earlier this week), but designed for more athletic activities. You can tell this because, despite looking almost identical to the CX 6.00BT (which is, in turn, extremely similar to the HD1 Free), the CX Sport has the word "Sport" in the name, and also comes in a bright yellow color scheme with some extra rubber fins. The CX 6.00BT, for reference, has a blue color scheme and no fins, but otherwise appears to be the exact same hardware, down to the six-hour battery life and Bluetooth AptX support. The main difference — aside from the color — is that the CX Sport is said to be "splash- and sweat-resistant,"... |
Catfish host Nev Schulman accused of sexual misconduct Posted: 17 May 2018 12:05 PM PDT Catfish host and executive producer Nev Schulman is currently being investigated for sexual misconduct. The Daily Beast reports that MTV has temporarily halted production on the show. "We're working with Critical Content, our third party production company, to conduct a thorough investigation," a spokesperson told the publication. The show, named for the documentary of the same name, is dedicated to exposing the real people behind fake dating profiles. Schulman, along with co-host Max Joseph, helps hopeful romantics learn the truth behind their internet crushes. Schulman has denied any wrongdoing. "I have always been transparent about my life and would always take responsibility for my actions—but these claims are false," Schulman told T... |
Lego’s new line of connected toys will let you build and program the Batmobile Posted: 17 May 2018 12:00 PM PDT Lego announced a new connected toy line today, called Powered Up, as well as its first set in the series: an app-controlled Batmobile. The company previously ventured into connected toys, most recently with its Boost set that lets kids build a variety of items and then code and control them through an app. Remember the cat that plays the harmonica? Loved it. This new Powered Up line will consist of multiple products that vary in complexity, instead of one set that can be used to build multiple things. Some sets might only be battery-powered, while others could be remote-controlled or app-controlled. Some of this functionality will ship with the sets, although kids will be able to buy additional accessories that'll add features to their... |
Now you can ask Google Home to access your Play Movies library Posted: 17 May 2018 11:57 AM PDT Before today you could ask Google Home (and in turn, Google Assistant) to play shows on streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, but not with Google's own Play Movies service. All that changes today, now you can ask Google Home to assist your TV show or movie binge-watching without ever needing to link accounts — after all, you're using Google Assistant to access another Google service, so everything is attached to your account. This applies to both rented and purchased movies or TV content, as well. In fact, the new functionality is so tightly knit, you won't even find a setting for Play Movies within the Google Assistant's settings, which kind of makes sense. |
