Qualcomm is making midrange Android phones more powerful with its new Snapdragon 710 chip

Posted: 23 May 2018 07:00 PM PDT

What's more powerful than Qualcommn's midrange Snapdragon 660 processor, but not quite as powerful as the top-of-the-line Snapdragon 845 chip found in flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S9? The answer is apparently Qualcomm's newest mobile processor, the Snapdragon 710, and the first chip in the company's better-than-midrange Snapdragon 700 series that it announced earlier this year.

Qualcomm is holding to the same promises with the 710 that it first touted when it announced the line back in February. That includes twice the AI performance compared to the Snapdragon 660, which Qualcomm says should offer improvements in a wide range of applications from voice-based user interfaces to photography and biometrics. Other parts, like the X15...

Apple reportedly partnering with Volkswagen to make self-driving employee shuttles

Posted: 23 May 2018 05:22 PM PDT

Apple's once-ambitious self-driving car project has narrowed even further. The New York Times now reports that the company's negotiations with German automakers, including BMW and Mercedes, to develop an all-electric self-driving car have fallen through, after both companies refused to let Apple have control over the design of the vehicle and the data it produces. Now, Apple is partnering with Volkswagen to turn existing T6 Transporter vans into self-driving shuttles for Apple employees, the report says.

We've known since last year that Apple's car division, codenamed Project Titan and once aimed at making both the hardware and software for a new autonomous vehicle, had shifted gears to focus in the near-term on a shuttle service known...

Popular read-it-later app Instapaper informed all European users today that its service would be temporarily unavailable starting Thursday, May 24th while it continues to make changes to ensure it's compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR. News of the shutdown was reported first by writer and technologist Owen Williams.

Here's Instapaper's message in full:

Starting tomorrow May 24, 2018, access to the Instapaper service will be temporarily unavailable for residents in Europe as we continue to make changes in light of the General Data Protection Regulation...

Facebook is expanding its unconventional approach to combating revenge porn

Posted: 23 May 2018 03:53 PM PDT

Facebook made headlines last fall when news surfaced of a somewhat counterintuitive approach to combating revenge porn that involved asking users to upload nude photos to the company's servers. Now, the official safety division of Facebook says it's expanding that initial pilot program to the US, UK, and Canada. Previously, the solution had been deployed only in Australia and only in partnership with the office of the Australian government's e-Safety Commissioner.

In a public post on the official Facebook Safety page, Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis says the company is "partnering with safety organizations on a way for people to securely submit photos they fear will be shared without their consent, so we can block them from being...

YouTube Music will eventually get Google Play Music’s best features, including user uploads

Posted: 23 May 2018 02:37 PM PDT

YouTube Music — the new YouTube Music, I mean — is Google's big push to finally create a subscription streaming music service that catches on and can legitimately challenge Spotify and Apple Music. It's currently rolling out on Android and iOS, but the staggered launch means it'll be awhile before everyone can actually use YouTube Music. Google Play Music, the company's existing premium music app, isn't going away in the meantime. "Nothing will change about Google Play Music in the near future," Elias Roman, who has been a product manager for both services, told The Verge today.

Google has said that it will give users plenty of notice when it does decide to make big changes. A migration to YouTube Music should be seen as inevitable for...

Tinder is testing Places, a location-sharing feature that matches you with your coffee shop bae

Posted: 23 May 2018 02:00 PM PDT

We knew Tinder Places — the dating app's new way to connect people through location sharing — was coming, but Tinder officially announced today that it's testing the service in Australia and Chile. Places will let users find potential matches based off of the places they travel, whether that be a dog park, restaurant, coffee shop, or movie theater. The idea, Tinder says, is to give users a mutual interest. It's powered through Foursquare, which has already done all the hard work of mapping venues and identifying public spaces. Tinder says this technology will prevent private places from being shared, including doctor's offices and workplaces.

Each location will populate about 30 minutes after a user has left and will expire after 28...

Money’s better than e-cigs or nicotine gum at helping smokers quit, study says

Posted: 23 May 2018 02:00 PM PDT

Giving smokers free electronic cigarettes may not help them kick the habit, according to new research. What helps is giving them money instead.

For a study published today in The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers gave over 6,000 smokers different tools to quit smoking, like free nicotine patches, motivational texts, free e-cigarettes, and free medication or e-cigs plus a total of $600. Overall, only 1.3 percent of smokers had quit after six months. Those who received money fared much better, while e-cigs and medication alone didn't really help people stay smoke-free.

Although the number of Americans who smoke cigarettes is going down, smoking is still the number one...

Sprint is charging more for the LG G7 ThinQ than Verizon or T-Mobile

Posted: 23 May 2018 01:57 PM PDT

The LG G7 ThinQ will be even more expensive on Sprint than Verizon or T-Mobile. Today, Sprint announced its price for the LG G7 ThinQ will be $792. That's $42 more than other major carriers. Verizon and T-Mobile are both charging $750, which is already a little too much.

Verizon's payment plan will be $31.25 a month for 24 months, while T-Mobile's plan requires you to put $30 down and pay $30 a month for 24 months. Sprint's payment plan is $33 a month for 18 months, and then you can choose to return it or pay for six more months and own the phone.

While Sprint's pricing isn't great if you're buying the phone on your own, there are some cases where you can get a good deal on it. It's running a lease one, get one promotion, but you'll need...

Battlefield V returns to World War II this October

Posted: 23 May 2018 01:36 PM PDT

Two years after the release of Battlefield 1, EA is ready to add a new entry to its storied shooter franchise, announcing today the first details and the release date for Battlefield V. Returning to the grand and ghastly stage of World War II, this new game will focus on squad-based gameplay, eschewing the explosively popular battle royale competitive modes of games like PUBG and Fortnite. I attended a preview event for Battlefield V today, and though it isn't quite ready to play yet, the developers from Dice provided a comprehensive overview of what's new and different — and there's a lot.

Perhaps the biggest unifying theme to the changes in Battlefield V is the move away from abstraction. You no longer just move into an area and get...

Twitch and BBC will stream 500 classic episodes of Doctor Who

Posted: 23 May 2018 12:33 PM PDT

BBC and Twitch Presents have partnered to bring the majority of Doctor Who's classic episodes — the ones that aired between 1963 and '89 — to the live-streaming service's platform, starting on May 29th and ending seven weeks later. If you missed out on the show or have been interested in the hype around it, now's a good time to catch up on its earliest seasons and meet the older doctors.

Doctor Who has been around for 55 years, which is an astonishing feat for any television series, and its longevity means that it has literal generations of fans who have grown up with the show. And it's only become more popular in recent years — though it's also become harder to watch.

Before 2016, when Amazon bought exclusive rights from BBC to stream...
