The first Fortnite World Cup with $100 million in prize money is happening in 2019 Posted: 12 Jun 2018 06:31 PM PDT Epic Games announced more details about its e-sports plans for Fortnite, revealing today during its live celebrity-streamer ProAm tournament in Los Angeles during E3 that the competitions will all be part of what's called the Fortnite World Cup. The prize pool, first announced earlier this year, will be $100 million. It will be spread out over a number of different "organized events, online events, and major organized competitions all over the world," reads the developer's blog post. Crucially, Epic is taking a far different approach than other e-sports leagues, like Blizzard's Overwatch League. (Though Blizzard does operate an annual Overwatch World Cup as well.) "This is for you, the players. Qualifications for the Fortnite World Cup... |
Fortnite now has 125 million players just one year after launch Posted: 12 Jun 2018 06:12 PM PDT Developer Epic Games announced today that Fortnite has grown to 125 million registered players in less than a year. The metric, confirmed in a blog post about the game's $100 million e-sports competition, is the first updated player figures from Epic since the company confirmed the game had been downloaded 45 million times back in January. Just last week, Epic investor Tencent confirmed that 40 million people play the game at once a month. Fortnite came out in July 2017, and its battle royale game mode didn't launch until September of that same year. It's no wonder Fortnite has ballooned in popularity given that is both free and accessible on almost every major platform, including the Nintendo Switch as of earlier today. The only player... |
Pokémon: Let’s Go’s pokéball controller costs $50, but comes with a free Mew Posted: 12 Jun 2018 03:38 PM PDT Pokémon: Let's Go, the new game that's out to bridge the gulf between types of Pokémon fans, can be played with just a regular Joy-Con. But based on our actual gameplay experience so far, the real way to play the upcoming adventure for the Switch will be through the new Poké Ball Plus controller. At E3, Nintendo announced pricing information for the controller — along with the news that each Poké Ball Plus will come with a free Mew. And in addition to working as a functional controller for the game, there's the added fun of being able to transfer a Pokémon to the controller, where it can make noise and vibrate the controller for a truly authentic on-the-go Pokémon experience. Nintendo is also including a bonus for players who spend the... |
Pokémon: Let’s Go is a simple game improved by its pricey pokéball controller Posted: 12 Jun 2018 02:58 PM PDT Game Freak has been adamant that Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee! are not an addition to the mainline, "core" Pokémon series — the one that kicked off with Pokémon Red and Blue (or Green, in Japan) back in 1996. Instead, they're a soft reboot to the beloved Pokémon Yellow, a revisiting of the original Kanto region and the first 151 pokémon that made the series so popular. It's an improvement on the original gameplay, but players only need to spend a few minutes with the game to understand just how simple it is by modern Pokémon standards. There's a soothing, familiar rhythm to Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! While Eevee and Pikachu are content to ride on your shoulder throughout the game, you can... |
Splatoon 2’s Octo Expansion launches on June 13th Posted: 12 Jun 2018 02:57 PM PDT Splatoon 2's upcoming Octo Expansion wasn't a focus during Nintendo's big showcase at E3, but there's news coming out of the expo anyway: Nintendo has announced that the new single-player DLC will be available as of tomorrow, June 13th. The Octo Expansion is the first paid DLC for Splatoon 2, but it promises to add a lot of content to the game, with 80 new single-player campaign missions that will have players using the game's various paint-based weapons in the series' toughest challenges yet. In an early hands-on, The Verge's Nick Statt found the new levels shockingly difficult, so even the most hardened Inkling experts should expect some complicated missions ahead.

AT&T’s Time Warner merger kicks off a new era of streaming-video monopolies Posted: 12 Jun 2018 02:47 PM PDT Today, the US District Court for the District of Columbia cleared the way for the world's largest telecom to buy the world's third-largest entertainment company, kicking off a new era in how content gets distributed online. Pending appeal, AT&T will now be able to purchase Time Warner for $85 billion, bringing subsidiaries like CNN, HBO, and Warner Bros. movie studios along for the ride. Before today, AT&T's holdings were mostly confined to distributing information, either through wireline internet, wireless phone service, or broadcast satellite TV. Now, it will own a major stake in some of the largest companies producing that content, with major implications for anyone trying to stream video online. The ruling will have an immediate... |
Apple quietly banned developers from selling and sharing users’ contacts Posted: 12 Jun 2018 01:43 PM PDT Apple has quietly tightened its App Store rules to better protect users from developers who want to harvest their data or sell it to third parties. Previously, developers would ask for users' phone contacts and sometimes then sold that data without the explicit consent of the users or their contacts, according to Bloomberg, which spotted the change. The changes to the rules, which were made last week, explicitly state that developers are banned from turning address books into a database of contacts and from selling that database. They also can't turn data into user profiles. Developers can still ask users for contact lists for use within their app, but they'll have to tell users exactly what they're going to do with the data. If they... |
Disney says it didn’t censor a gay kiss at E3 Posted: 12 Jun 2018 01:42 PM PDT Disney XD, the kid-focused cable channel owned by Disney, partnered up with gaming news website IGN to broadcast the E3 Electronic Gaming Expo this year, but the broadcast ran into some issues. Viewers noticed that the stream occasionally tuned out or blurred scenes at odd times, at one point even omitting part of one of the most-talked about moments at the show — an intimate moment between two women in the new trailer for The Last of Us Part II. Controversy broke out on social media after a clip by Richard Crosby was uploaded to YouTube titled "Disney XD E3 Censorship." The footage shows the beginning of the Last of Us II presentation by Uncharted developer Naughty Dog. Ellie, the protagonist, is at a dance with a lover. While talking,... |
AT&T can complete its massive merger with Time Warner, judge rules Posted: 12 Jun 2018 01:41 PM PDT In what could be one of the most consequential antitrust decisions in recent memory, a judge has ruled that AT&T and Time Warner can merge, despite a lawsuit from the Justice Department arguing that the deal would be anti-competitive. While the Justice Department could still appeal, the decision clears the way for a new telecom behemoth, combining AT&T's paid-TV subscribers with Time Warner's content, which includes HBO, CNN, and Warner Bros. The federal judge ruling on the case did not impose any conditions on the deal as part of the decision, handing AT&T a clear victory in the dispute, while delivering a major blow to the Justice Department's antitrust enforcers and telegraphing a green light to other companies with similar merger... |
