| This fingerprint-verified padlock is extremely easy to hack Posted: 13 Jun 2018 03:05 PM PDT  We here at The Verge have tried to warn everyone about smart locks, particularly smart locks that rely on fingerprints for authentication. The TappLock is one such lock that was crowdfunded on Indiegogo and is now available to buy. And unsurprisingly, it's incredibly easy to physically and virtually hack. YouTuber JerryRigEverything proved that he could pull the lock apart using just a sticky GoPro mount, while cybersecurity company PenTest Partners found that the actual code and digital authentication methods for the lock were basically nonexistent. The paper, co-authored by a finance professor who is known for catching fraud in financial markets, reveals several distinct patterns in trading that suggest several people or a person at the major cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex inflated virtual coin prices. The 66-page report states that Bitfinex might have used the virtual coin Tether, which it owns, to generate fake demand for bitcoin by buying up the virtual currency and keeping its price up while it sank at other exchanges. It said that its network is now strong enough to handle congestion, without needing to purposefully slow down speeds.
