Original arcade Donkey Kong comes to Nintendo Switch in first-ever re-release Posted: 14 Jun 2018 07:30 PM PDT The arcade version of Donkey Kong is a pretty big deal in retro gaming circles, as seen in the classic documentary King of Kong. Until today, though, it was impossible to legally acquire or sell an arcade-perfect version of the game without tracking down an actual arcade cabinet, reportedly due to complex legal issues over authorship of the code. Now those issues appear to have been resolved: Nintendo just put out Donkey Kong on the Switch for $7.99 through its Arcade Archives series. This Donkey Kong release actually contains three versions of the game: the Japanese original, the more common updated Japanese version with bug fixes, and the international version. You can rotate the Switch 90 degrees to play with a vertical screen layout,... |
Google is having trouble retaining black and Latinx employees Posted: 14 Jun 2018 05:41 PM PDT Google released its annual diversity report today, and among the data is a new section detailing attrition rates — that is, how often employees leave the company. And it points to a key problem that Google has in creating a more diverse and representative workforce: black and Latinx employees leave more often than white and Asian employees. That's particularly problematic, because black employees make up just 2.5 percent of Google's US workforce, and Latinx employees are just a point higher, at 3.6 percent. For comparison, the US Census Bureau says these groups make up 13.3 percent and 17.8 percent of the overall population (not including people who reported two or more races). White employees, meanwhile, make up 53.1 percent of Google's... |
AT&T finishes acquiring Time Warner, becoming massive media conglomerate Posted: 14 Jun 2018 05:01 PM PDT AT&T has completed its acquisition of Time Warner, just two days after a federal judge ruled the merger could clear despite the objections of the Justice Department and just hours after the Justice Department said it would allow the deal to close. The $85 billion deal puts the many massive media properties owned by Time Warner — including HBO, Warner Bros., and CNN — under the ownership of one of America's largest internet, TV, and phone service providers. It creates a whole mess of potential conflicts of interest when it comes to content favoritism, with opponents of the deal drawing concern around AT&T's ability to promote its own shows and movies over those of other companies. AT&T initially signed a deal to buy Time Warner in October... |
Elon Musk says the Chicago tunnel project could start construction in ‘three to four months’ Posted: 14 Jun 2018 03:00 PM PDT Construction on the Boring Company's newly announced underground transit link between downtown Chicago and O'Hare International Airport could start in just three to four months, Elon Musk said today. During a joint press conference with Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Boring Company CEO said that the only thing that would slow the project are the pending "regulatory and environmental approvals." The plan, which leaked on Wednesday ahead of a planned announcement, involves the Boring Company digging two tunnels that will connect the currently unfinished transit station underneath the Block 37 stop of the Chicago Loop system to O'Hare. Passengers will travel in high-speed pods made by Tesla in groups of up to 16 at a time (plus luggage),... |
Here’s what we know about Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s new battle royale mode Posted: 14 Jun 2018 02:45 PM PDT One of the big, noteworthy announcements ahead of this year's E3 show was that the new Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, first revealed back in March, would contain a battle royale mode in the style of Fortnite and Playerunknown's Battlegrounds. The game mode is going to be called Blackout, and at the time, developer Treyarch and publisher Activision revealed only a few small details about it. We knew Blackout would feature the largest Call of Duty map ever made — approximately 1,500 times larger than the classic Nuketown map — which would also contain land, air, and sea vehicles. Beyond that, we weren't told anything else. Unfortunately, Treyarch didn't have Blackout here at E3 to try ourselves, but The Verge did get some time with co-studio... |
The Justice Department will let the AT&T–Time Warner merger close Posted: 14 Jun 2018 02:38 PM PDT The Justice Department announced today that it will not seek a legal stay of the AT&T–Time Warner merger ruling, clearing the way for the completion of the giant deal. In a sharp rebuke to antitrust enforcers, a judge ruled this week that he would allow the deal to go through despite the Justice Department's lawsuit. In his decision, the judge suggested that an appeal would be futile and that granting a temporary legal stay of the ruling could unfairly scuttle the deal. With a deadline for the deal looming later this month, he wrote that using a stay to block the deal would be "unjust." A Justice Department spokesperson said that although the agency could still appeal the... |
Fans think PT lives on in new Death Stranding footage Posted: 14 Jun 2018 02:06 PM PDT When PT — a playable teaser for Hideo Kojima's reboot of Silent Hill — left the PlayStation Store in 2015, it took on an urban legend status. No longer downloadable and with the larger game canceled to boot, only those who already had PT on their system could continue to play it. But after Sony's E3 press conference earlier this week, some fans think that the legend isn't entirely dead. PT originally came out in 2014 and instantly became viral on social media. In a departure from most horror games, PT scared players largely by making them walk through a hallway over and over again; the appeal was in how even the mundane could be terrifying in the right hands. As players dove deeper into the game, they realized that there was a much... |
Instagram won’t alert people if you screenshot their stories Posted: 14 Jun 2018 01:51 PM PDT Instagram confirmed to BuzzFeed News today that it's no longer testing a feature that would have let people see when someone took a screenshot of their story. This is incredibly good news for all creepers, myself included. The company said in February that it was testing this feature and that some users would receive a warning when they tried to screenshot something for the first time: "Next time you take a screenshot or screen recording, the person who posted the story will be able to see it." Snapchat famously tells users if their content has been screenshotted, and it seemed like Instagram was going to steal that functionality. I'm relieved it's decided not to do so. Of course, you can always still see who has watched your story by... |
Samsung promises to use 100 percent renewable energy in US, Europe, and China by 2020 Posted: 14 Jun 2018 01:49 PM PDT Samsung said today that it's going to make its factories and offices in the US, Europe, and China run on 100 percent renewable energy. The announcement comes after a more than year-long Greenpeace campaign advocating for greener practices and protesting the company's role in worsening climate change. Activists have pointed out that Samsung lags behind rivals when it comes to going green. Apple and Google have both purchased enough renewable energy, such as wind or solar energy, to offset their global energy consumption since April. (It's likely that Samsung will also purchase renewable energy to offset its consumption, rather than be directly powered by renewables.) Samsung is only explicitly promising 100 percent renewable energy for... |
Sony blocks Fortnite cross-play between PS4 and Nintendo Switch: the latest news Posted: 14 Jun 2018 01:38 PM PDT When the battle royale gaming sensation Fortnite arrived on the Nintendo Switch during E3 2018, Sony immediately blocked cross-play between players on the Switch and its own PlayStation 4. The company went a step further by forbidding Epic accounts that were previously linked with a PS4 from working on the Switch version of the game, preventing people with both consoles from syncing their progress and items earned or purchased between the two platforms. Sony has refused to allow cross-play between PS4 and rival consoles for several other games. It seems to be okay with PS4 players who are being pitted against PC or mobile gamers, but not anyone using an Xbox One or Switch. The Fortnite situation has thrown the company's... |
