Federal prosecutors indict Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes for fraud Posted: 15 Jun 2018 02:35 PM PDT Federal prosecutors have indicted disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and former president and chief operating officer, Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani, for defrauding customers and investors, calling their actions a "corporate conspiracy" that "endangered health and lives." Holmes has also stepped down as CEO from the blood-testing company, once a Silicon Valley darling valued at $9 billion. Starting in 2015, a series of articles in The Wall Street Journal by investigative journalist John Carreyrou revealed that the company was peddling a technology — blood tests with a simple finger prick — that did not actually work. The company has been forced to void or correct nearly a million blood-test results. The company has since become an... |
Nerdist, others disavow Chris Hardwick in the wake of ex Chloe Dykstra’s post detailing abuse Posted: 15 Jun 2018 02:26 PM PDT Warning: This piece contains language and content regarding domestic abuse that some people may find sensitive or triggering. Last night the actress and TV personality Chloe Dykstra wrote an unlisted blog post on Medium detailing allegations of emotional and sexual abuse that occurred in a relationship over a period of three years. Since the post went live, many have speculated that the ex-boyfriend in question was TV host and podcaster Chris Hardwick; some, including his former employees, have publicly distanced themselves from the Nerdist co-founder. In a follow-up tweet, Dykstra, who is also the daughter of Academy Award-winning special effects guru John Dykstra, thanked people for their support and did not contest the connection. "In... |
White nationalist Jared Taylor can sue Twitter for banning him, judge rules Posted: 15 Jun 2018 02:26 PM PDT Jared Taylor, founder of white nationalist publication American Renaissance, can proceed with a lawsuit against Twitter. Taylor sued Twitter in February, alleging that the company had violated civil rights and contract law by banning two of his accounts. Yesterday, California judge Harold Kahn narrowed the suit's potential scope, but he said that Twitter hadn't made a strong enough argument for throwing it out altogether. Twitter argued that Taylor's complaint violated California's anti-SLAPP law, which penalizes malicious lawsuits meant to suppress speech. Taylor wants a court to make Twitter reinstate his accounts and stop enforcing a rule that lets it ban any user for any reason, which Twitter argues is akin to controlling which... |
Jaguar broke a world record with this tiny electric boat Posted: 15 Jun 2018 01:52 PM PDT Jaguar's battery-powered V20E boat just broke a maritime speed record. Peter Dredge, the co-founder of Jaguar Vector, piloted the boat at speeds of 88.62 miles per hour across eight miles of the Coniston Water lake in Cumbria, England. His speeds broke the previous record of 76.8 mph set ten years ago.
The small and speedy boat was developed with racing experts over at Vector, as well as Williams Advanced Engineering, from which it... |

Apple and Oprah are teaming up to make videos Posted: 15 Jun 2018 11:18 AM PDT Apple has officially signed Oprah Winfrey to a multiyear deal for new original programs, according to a statement released today. The tech company didn't specify the role Winfrey would play in these shows, but a representative said that "together, Winfrey and Apple will create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world. Winfrey's projects will be released as part of a lineup of original content from Apple." The announcement comes in the midst of the video streaming war between Apple, Amazon and Netflix, as the companies ramp up their original programming and win the hearts — and views — of customers. Netflix previously announced a multiyear production deal with the Obama family, and... |
Trump’s 2020 campaign is reportedly using former Cambridge Analytica employees to target voters Posted: 15 Jun 2018 10:57 AM PDT Data analysis company Data Propria, led by a former Cambridge Analytica strategist, is reportedly working on President Donald Trump's 2020 re-election campaign. The Associated Press reports that Data Propria has begun work on a project "along the lines" of Cambridge Analytica's controversial work for Trump in 2016. Data Propria head Matt Oczkowski denied the claim, though he didn't rule the idea out for the future. The AP writes that Data Propria, which launched late last month, is affiliated with at least four employees of now-defunct Cambridge Analytica. (Oczkowski himself was formerly Cambridge Analytica's head of product.) Like Cambridge Analytica, Data Propria uses data and behavioral science to target internet users with ads or... |
With Incredibles 2, Pixar moves away from complicated emotions Posted: 15 Jun 2018 10:28 AM PDT Pixar Animation Studios has built its reputation on a lot of elements: computer animation that was miles ahead of the competition for more than 15 years, memorable humor and memorable characters, and stories that are accessible to children but sophisticated enough to keep adults engaged. But past a certain point in its history, Pixar became known above everything else for its willingness to explore emotional depths its contemporaries wouldn't touch. Pixar films like Finding Nemo, Up, Toy Story 3, and Inside Out deal directly with death and other very personal, deeply felt losses, from letting go of childhood to letting go of the possibility of motherhood. The Pixar "brain trust" — a core group of insiders who push the studio's chosen... |
What will Disney and Comcast own if they buy Fox? Posted: 15 Jun 2018 10:28 AM PDT Earlier this week, Comcast made a $65 million offer to acquire most of 21st Century Fox, attempting to derail a Disney-Fox acquisition that was announced last year. Comcast and Disney have both been chasing this deal for months. And although the financial terms for each company are different, they're looking for the same assets from Fox — which, in turn, is looking to refocus on its core network TV business. But which parts of Fox are staying independent, and which ones will Comcast or Disney own? And how will the new parts fit into these massive conglomerates' existing businesses? Here's what you can look forward to if one of the deals goes through. Independent "New Fox" keeps sports and newsComcast and Disney both want 21st Century... |
Why we’re going to see more and more older athletes Posted: 15 Jun 2018 10:25 AM PDT In sports, "peak age" is always looming, and it can come as quickly as the early 20s. But it doesn't have to be this way — and we're likely to see more and more older athletes, says journalist Jeff Bercovici, San Francisco bureau chief for Inc. Magazine and author of Play On: The New Science of Elite Performance at Any Age. Five years ago, Bercovici noticed that, increasingly, the best athletes in the world weren't necessarily the youngest. To figure out why, he interviewed hundreds of athletes and coaches to unravel the mystery of athletic longevity. The Verge spoke with Bercovici about what happens to our bodies when we age, the influence of genetics, and the technology helping us improve performance. |
