GitHub and Medium take down database of ICE employee LinkedIn accounts Posted: 19 Jun 2018 03:17 PM PDT GitHub and Medium have scrubbed a database of ICE employees off their platforms, soon after a New York-based artist posted the scraped LinkedIn information. Sam Lavigne, who has previously worked on projects like a white collar predictive policing program, wrote in a Medium post today that, "As ICE continues to ramp up its inhumane surveillance and detention efforts, I believe it's important to document what's happening, and by whom, in any way we can." In an attempt to do that, Lavigne wrote a program that scraped LinkedIn for profiles that listed ICE as an employer. The program returned information on nearly 1,600 people, and Lavigne posted the resulting data publicly on GitHub. The database included information like job title,... |
New EU copyright filtering law threatens the internet as we knew it Posted: 19 Jun 2018 01:36 PM PDT On June 20th, a committee of the European Parliament will vote on whether to proceed on a copyright proposal that some say will destroy the internet as we know it. That may sound fairly hyperbolic, but over 70 experts — including World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee and Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales — have criticized the proposal, saying it will turn the internet into "a tool for the automated surveillance and control of its users." The controversial provision in question is Article 13, which requires internet platforms to filter uploads for copyright infringement. If it seems as though Article 13 has sprung up out of nowhere, blindsiding people, it's because it quite literally has. "It wasn't going to be in the final draft but it was... |
Oppo made a Lamborghini edition of its new flagship Find X smartphone Posted: 19 Jun 2018 01:29 PM PDT Oppo showed off its new Find X smartphone with a pop-up notch earlier today, and now the company has announced a partnership with Lamborghini to create a special version of the device. The smartphone maker says the Lamborghini version of the Oppo Find X will cost 1,699 euros ($1,966), and it's the start of a partnership with the Italian luxury car brand. The special edition smartphone will have Super VOOC charging, which helps it fast charge its 3,400mAh battery from 0 to 100 percent within 35 minutes, according to Oppo. There hasn't been word on whether the specs will be different from the regular Find X, but we do know that the Lamborghini edition has a carbon fiber texture on the rear with the car brand's logo.

Oppo’s new Find X flagship smartphone will cost £999 and ships in August Posted: 19 Jun 2018 01:07 PM PDT The Oppo Find X, the first smartphone from the Chinese electronics company to be sold in Europe and North America, will cost £999 (about $1,150 at current USD conversation rates). The pricing was announced at the tail end of Oppo's lavish reveal event that was held at the Louvre in Paris today. That price appears to be only for the 256GB configuration, and we don't know whether the phone will be available for less money. The device is slated to ship in August, though we don't know yet whether that time frame is for Europe, North America, or both regions. Prior to the Find X, Oppo phones were restricted to China, India, Philippines, and a few other Asian countries. This new model, which features an edge-to-edge display, is Oppo's attempt... |
TP-Link’s new mesh router can control smart home gadgets Posted: 19 Jun 2018 01:03 PM PDT TP-Link is launching its second mesh router today, the Deco M9 Plus, and it comes with two notable upgrades over the original around speed and smart home functionality. The first is the more common feature: this is a tri-band router, instead of a dual band one, which means it should allow for even faster speeds. Like most tri-band routers, the M9 Plus sets up a dedicated network for communication between router units, allowing for faster operation for the networks connected to your phone and computer. TP-Link's first mesh router, the Deco M5, was only a dual-band model, which is what you'll usually find on routers, and tends to be a bit cheaper. But at this point, most mesh systems offer both dual- and tri-band options, so there isn't... |
Were real dinosaurs as bulletproof as the one in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom? Posted: 19 Jun 2018 01:03 PM PDT At one point in the new film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Velociraptor trainer Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) fires multiple rifle shots into the "Indoraptor," a new dinosaur hybrid constructed from DNA taken from Tyrannosaurus rex samples, Velociraptors, and god knows what else. The dinosaur cowers for a couple seconds, then charges at its prey, seemingly undamaged. Like the Indominus rex in the first Jurassic World, the franchise's latest human-made dino seems to be immune to gunfire. Obviously, there's a fair bit of scientific fudging going on in the Jurassic Park series, given that the entire series' premise is based on an incorrect idea of how long DNA can be preserved. But that image of dinosaurs shrugging off gunfire for dramatic... |
Uber will start paying some drivers to switch to electric cars Posted: 19 Jun 2018 12:55 PM PDT Uber drivers who use electric vehicles may be getting a raise under a new pilot project. The company launched a broad effort on Tuesday to get drivers to ditch their dirty, fossil fuel-burning vehicles in favor of cleaner, electric-powered ones — in part by offering them more money to make the switch. The ride-hailing giant announced a yearlong pilot program to provide cash incentives to some drivers who use electric vehicles, or EVs, with the goal of facilitating at least 5 million trips over the next 12 months. Uber is also adding features to its app for drivers who specifically use these types of vehicles, and it's partnering with nonprofits and UC-Davis researchers to discover new ways Uber and local governments can encourage EV... |
Starz joins YouTube TV as a $9 per month premium add-on Posted: 19 Jun 2018 12:52 PM PDT Starz is coming to YouTube TV as a paid add-on option that will see the premium cable company's channels come to the over-the-top streaming service for an extra $9 per month, via TechCrunch. That price includes access to all 14 Starz and Starz Encore channels, making it the latest option to join YouTube TV's premium extras (along with Showtime, Shudder, Sundance Now, and Fox Soccer Plus.) Those are all separate subscriptions on top of the $40 per month price tag for the base YouTube TV service. Notably missing on that list is HBO, which according to a Bloomberg report is due to issues with Time Warner negotiations over Turner TV channels for YouTube TV, which lead to Time Warner instructing HBO to stop negotiating with YouTube. |
Prominent tech CEOs are denouncing Trump’s border separation policy Posted: 19 Jun 2018 12:32 PM PDT Some of the tech industry's most prominent CEOs have come forward over the past day to denounce President Donald Trump's policy of separating children from their parents who are arrested at the border. Apple CEO Tim Cook, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk are among the CEOs who have called for an end to the policy, which has also been criticized by the United Nations as "unconscionable." Cook said the separations are "inhumane and need to stop," telling The Irish Times: "It's heartbreaking to see the images and hear the sounds of the kids. Kids are the most vulnerable people in any society. I think that what's happening is inhumane. It needs to stop." In a Facebook post, Mark Zuckerberg said, "We need to stop this... |
How to text from your computer with Android Messages Posted: 19 Jun 2018 12:25 PM PDT Yesterday Google started rolling out the ability to text from the web with Android Messages. The feature gives users a lot more flexibility in choosing how and where they can carry on conversations. As long as your Android smartphone is powered on, you can text from a desktop computer or even other mobile devices — including iOS products like an iPad if you just open up Safari. Aside from text, you can also send emoji, stickers, and images over the web. Using Android Messages on the web requires using Android Messages as your main texting app on your phone. I like it just fine, and Google is clearly planning big things for the future, but if you prefer, say, Samsung's default messages app or something else, the two don't work together.... |
