YouTube will now let creators play pre-recorded videos during live streams

Posted: 21 Jun 2018 04:50 PM PDT

YouTube announced several new features out of VidCon today that will shake up the way mid-sized creators monetize. In particular, it announced a Premieres feature, which will let creators pre-record videos for their live streams. This allows creators to focus on things like answering live chat questions while the pre-recorded video is playing.

The platform is also expanding its YouTube Sponsorships and rebranding it as Channel Memberships. Creators can name their fan clubs and charge $4.99 for membership, so long as they have at least 100,000 subscribers. They can design custom emoji for their live streams and designate special perks for paying members, similar to how Patreon works. The feature will roll out over the next few weeks.

How YouTube creators are using the platform’s new Patreon-like subscriptions

Posted: 21 Jun 2018 04:45 PM PDT

YouTube has announced new features at its VidCon conference today that give creators additional ways to earn money on the platform. Most notably, YouTube is expanding a program over the next few weeks that lets creators and channel owners start their own fan clubs, where membership costs $4.99 to join and fans can pay for additional perks and exclusive content, similar to how Patreon and Twitch function. The feature was previously restricted only to YouTube Gaming channels.

There are also additional integrations for YouTube videos going forward. For instance, a blogger making a Nike branded video can now display Nike products on a "shelf" below their video. YouTubers will also be able to design their own merchandise through Teespring...

Here’s why Fortnite shopping carts are giving Epic Games such a big headache

Posted: 21 Jun 2018 12:56 PM PDT

One of Fortnite's biggest draws is that it's constantly updated with new things, like limited-time events or fancy weapons. While the steady drip of tweaks and additions help keep Fortnite fresh, it's hard to predict how all these different elements will interact with one another. Lately, players have been exploiting a Fortnite vehicle in a way that keeps forcing Epic Games to take it out.

Shopping carts were introduced into Fortnite on May 30th, and they were an immediate hit. Players could drive carts, or could push them around while other people enjoyed the ride. Better yet, fans could build elaborate ramps and traps that turned matches into amusement park rides. It was messy and ridiculous, yet very Fortnite.

But two weeks later,...

MoviePass will start to surge prices for popular movies in July

Posted: 21 Jun 2018 11:50 AM PDT

MoviePass, the cheap movie ticket subscription service that has taken the film industry by storm, is about to introduce a controversial change to its service. Previously, you could pay a flat price to see any movie you want, but starting in July, getting tickets for high-demand movies will incur an additional fee.

MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe told Business Insider that the surge pricing will only happen under certain conditions.

"At certain times for certain films — on opening weekend — there could be an additional charge for films," Lowe said. The added fee will start at two dollars, but Lowe did not specify how high the pricing can go. Fortunately, MoviePass users who pay for the annual subscription won't have to worry about surge...

Facebook Messenger can now translate between Spanish and English

Posted: 21 Jun 2018 11:47 AM PDT

Facebook Messenger can now automatically translate messages between Spanish and English as part of a new M Translation feature that was first announced at F8 earlier this year, via Engadget.

M Translations join the existing M Suggestions features that are already built into Messenger for things like quick replies, polls, and sharing your location. The translation feature, which should be available now for users in the US and Mexico, will recognize when a user gets a message in a language that isn't set as their default. Then, Messenger's M bot will pop up and offer to immediately translate it. The feature had previously been available for users in Marketplace transactions, but it's rolling out now to all standard Messenger conversations,...

This Nintendo Switch accessory lets you play classic arcade games vertically

Posted: 21 Jun 2018 11:21 AM PDT

There have been a handful of excellent, classic arcade games released on the Nintendo Switch that are best played vertically, as was originally intended. Titles like Ikaruga, Pac-Man, and most recently the first proper port of Donkey Kong's arcade iteration. There's only one problem: playing vertical games on the Switch is a nightmare, since the tablet's kickstand and controller slots don't support the format. But a new crowdfunded accessory could solve that problem.

It's called the Flip Grip, and it's essentially a grip that holds the Switch vertically, while the Joy-Con controllers slot in on the side. It's made of a single piece of ABS plastic and features rails on either side designed to work the same as the rails on the Switch...

Control is a ritual-obsessed, supernatural action game from the creator of Quantum Break

Posted: 21 Jun 2018 10:47 AM PDT

For the past few years, Remedy Entertainment has toyed with different ways to tell its stories. Its thriller game Alan Wake played out through episodic installments, not unlike a TV show. Sci-fi action-adventure game Quantum Break took the idea of television more literally, with a live-action series grafted on to a game. If players expect the developer's latest game, Control, to follow in these more experimental footsteps, however, they're in for a surprise. "With Control, we're focusing on other ways of telling stories," says game designer Sergey Mohov. Rather than toying with the conventions of television, it will be a game focused on environmental storytelling, and the missions that players embark on will be more than just linear...

Elon Musk wants cobalt out of his batteries — here’s why that’s a challenge

Posted: 21 Jun 2018 10:41 AM PDT

As electric vehicles become less niche, the batteries powering them need to keep up. Last week, Elon Musk tweeted that batteries for the Tesla Model 3 use less than 3 percent of an expensive chemical called cobalt, and the next generation battery "will use none" of the material that some have called the "blood diamond of batteries." How soon can that claim come true?

Cobalt is a key component of batteries. It's also the most expensive material in the battery and mined under conditions that often violate human rights. As a result, scientists and startups are rushing to create a cobalt-free battery.

Musk's "next-gen" claim is a vague phrase that doesn't set out a definite timeline, so it's impossible to know when he'll deliver — but don't...
