Apple’s redesigned MacBook Pro keyboard uses new method for repelling dust, reports iFixit Posted: 13 Jul 2018 05:47 PM PDT Apple's new MacBook Pro keyboards are slightly quieter than the ones found in the previous iteration of the laptop. But the company's silence on the mechanism's widespread mechanical issues, which Apple first acknowledged with a repair program last month, has left many scratching their heads and wondering if the new laptop's largely unchanged keyboard is susceptible to dust and crumb contamination under the hood. Now, iFixit says it's uncovered something that indicates that the new MacBook Pro keyboards use a silicone membrane underneath each individual key to keep dirt and other unsavory particles from finding their way under the keyboard and locking it up. The repair organization dismantled a new 15-inch MacBook Pro keyboard to... |
Best Buy somehow came up with the best way of charging Xbox game controller batteries Posted: 13 Jul 2018 04:05 PM PDT Look, I don't know how much time you spend in the video game accessories aisle at your local Best Buy. I like games plenty, but I'm not one for browsing fancy surround sound headsets, silicone controller skins, console carrying bags, or any of the other non-critical stuff on those shelves. But charging the batteries in my Xbox One controller can be a hassle, so from time to time I'll take a look and see whether anyone has come up with a method that's superior to swapping out rechargeable AA batteries or using Microsoft's Play & Charge cable. There are plenty of stands that can hold and charge your gamepad controllers, but I find them to be an eyesore. So that's not an option. Plus, most of them have a cord running out the back and... |
This Nintendo Switch adapter promises Bluetooth audio support Posted: 13 Jul 2018 03:36 PM PDT The Nintendo Switch is the perfect travel companion, but it's desperately lacking in one key area: wireless headphone support. Nintendo added support for wireless headphones via USB dongles last November, but only if you a USB Type-A to USB-C adapter to plug your headphone's dongle into the Switch console's port. Right now, the Switch does not support Bluetooth accessories. But a Kickstarter campaign from a team named Human Things aims to remedy that with their new device Genki. Launched last month on the crowdfunding site, Genki is a simple dongle for the Switch that promises support for Bluetooth 5.0 and multi-user audio so two audio devices can connect at the same time. It plugs in via the Switch's USB-C port and doesn't require its... |
Facebook poaches top Google engineer to help it design its own chips Posted: 13 Jul 2018 03:12 PM PDT Facebook has hired one of Google's lead chip developers, Shahriar Rabii, to help the social network in its ongoing effort to design its own silicon, according to a report from Bloomberg. Facebook hopped on the chip-developing bandwagon earlier this year, when they started to build a team that could design custom chips to power server and consumer hardware. Rabii's new role at Facebook will be as a vice president and head of silicon, according to an updated Linkedin bio. It's a move that's on trend with other tech giants, many of which are bringing chip design in-house rather than relying on big-name suppliers like Intel and Qualcomm. Apple has been creating its own custom processors for iOS devices for nearly a decade, and it has d... |
Legalizing weed is the right move for New York, the state’s health department says Posted: 13 Jul 2018 02:52 PM PDT The state of New York is weighing whether it should legalize marijuana — and a new report comes down hard in favor of the move, Bloomberg reports. Governor Andrew Cuomo asked for the report in January 2018, and today the New York State Department of Health sent the "Regulated Marijuana Report" to the governor's office. As part of the study, New York State agencies and experts examined the peer-reviewed literature about pot, public health, public safety — and, of course, the public pocketbook. They also investigated how other states that have legalized weed have fared. The results, released today, are a persuasive argument in favor of legalization: "It has become less a question of whether to legalize but how to do so responsibly," the... |
This week in tech, 20 years ago Posted: 13 Jul 2018 02:50 PM PDT As a person who covers day-to-day tech news, I often wonder how my writing might come off to someone in the future — and whether anyone will even be reading it. I can't answer those questions, but I can do the next best thing: look back at what other people were writing 20 years ago. Here are a collection of stories — big and small — that science and technology enthusiasts might have checked out two decades ago, and that can help inform the ways we think about the world today. |
How to set up AirPlay on your Sonos speakers Posted: 13 Jul 2018 02:29 PM PDT Sonos is adding support for Apple's AirPlay 2 wireless audio standard to its speakers, making them far more versatile for anyone who prefers Apple Music (or just likes using Apple's music app for local music on an iPhone). AirPlay 2 support also means that you'll be able to use a Sonos speaker in conjunction with Apple's own HomePod in a multi-room audio setup — an intriguing option for anyone who can't decide between the two companies. Here's how to get everything set up: Update the Sonos appFirst off, you'll want to update the Sonos companion app on your Android or iOS device. AirPlay support needs a firmware update to the speakers, and before you can install that update, you first need to download the update for the app that will let... |
First impressions of the new 15-inch MacBook Pro Posted: 13 Jul 2018 01:39 PM PDT The new MacBook Pro keyboards are quieter. We've had a top-of-the-line 15-inch MacBook Pro review unit in hand for an hour or two, and in that time, that's the main thing I can tell you. I'll give you a few more impressions, of course, but "pro" machines require quite a bit of testing to judge, and we intend to take our time with it. Is it fast? Of course it's fast: it has a six-core Intel i9 processor, 32GB of RAM, and 4TB of storage. As shipped, this machine would run for $6,699 (though $3,200 of that is the SSD). We'll hold off a more in-depth review after we've spent the next week or two putting it through its paces. We're especially interested in performance editing 4K video, battery life, and overall speed doing intensive tasks. ... |
Instacart is teaming with Postmates for delivery support in San Fransisco Posted: 13 Jul 2018 01:27 PM PDT Instacart is teaming up with Postmates to deliver groceries during its busiest hours, reports TechCrunch. The pilot program, which delivers groceries during the late morning and early afternoon, will launch in San Fransisco, with no immediate plans to expand them into other cities. Instacart reportedly says it's "considering" bringing the program further to possibly include other delivery services in the launch. This is in line with Postmates' recent steps toward expanding its delivery fleets, following a recent partnership with Walmart to extend grocery-delivering services for stores in Charlotte, North Carolina. For Postmates, this could be a way to supplement local businesses that can't afford to hire more delivery people. "We... |
Apple launches a $300 million fund to bring clean energy to China Posted: 13 Jul 2018 12:39 PM PDT Apple has announced a new investment fund to boost clean energy in China by connecting suppliers with "renewable energy sources," according to a press release. The company says it will work with 10 other suppliers to jointly invest $300 million over the next four years. The end result is what Apple calling "the China Clean Energy Fund," which will "invest in and develop clean energy projects" that total more than 1 gigawatt of renewable energy in the country. That's enough to power 1 million homes, according to the company. A third party, DWS Group, will manage the funds and invest. Overall, Apple and its suppliers hope to generate more than 4 gigawatts of clean energy by 2020. This announcement follows Apple's previous dives into... |
