Yvette Nicole Brown will take over AMC’s aftershow for The Walking Dead Posted: 14 Jul 2018 01:52 PM PDT In June, AMC pulled Nerdist founder Chris Hardwick's talk show Talking with Chris Hardwick, and removed him from hosting network's aftershow, The Talking Dead while it conducted an investigation relating to allegations of emotional and sexual abuse of actress Chloe Dykstra. AMC has revealed that Community star Yvette Nicole Brown will take over his duties on The Talking Dead, at least for now. AMC told Deadline that Brown would "step in as an interim guest host of The Walking Dead Season 9 Preview Special on August 5 and Talking Dead when it returns following the premiere of Fear the Walking Dead on August 12," while it finishes its investigation into Hardwick's behavior. Brown will also take over for Hardwick at San Diego Comic-Con... |
Zombieland 2 is officially happening Posted: 14 Jul 2018 01:23 PM PDT Ruben Fleischer's 2009 zombie film Zombieland is officially getting a sequel, with the director and original cast set to return, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie is expected to begin production in January, and hit theaters in October 2019. Zombieland 2 will reunite Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin, and will reportedly take the group "from the White House to the American heartland as they face off against new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors." The 2009 film was Fleischer's first, following Columbus (played by Jesse Eisenberg) — the survivors have taken on the names of cities to avoid becoming attached to one another — as he... |
France’s cyber command marched in Paris’s Bastille Day Parade for the first time Posted: 14 Jul 2018 12:54 PM PDT For the first time, France's military cyber command marched in this year's Bastille Day parade on the Champs Elysees in Paris, alongside other units in the nation's armed forces. The military noted that it's a recognition of the advances that the unit has made since its formation last year, and reinforces that "cyber defense remains a national priority." French defense minister Jean-Yves Le Drian announced the formation of COMCYBER in December 2016, noting that the emergence of state actors operating in cyberspace was a new way to approach warfare. The command brought all of the nation's soldiers focused on cyber defense under one command, with three main tasks: cyber intelligence, protection, and offense. The timing of the creation of... |
Darren Aronofsky’s Pi day: this week in tech, 20 years ago Posted: 14 Jul 2018 11:00 AM PDT There is surprisingly little news about technology and the 1998 World Cup. The 2018 World Cup wraps up this weekend, and we've had lots to say about it — from how streaming video has made watching the games more convenient (unless it completely screws up) to how World Cup memes have made it all the way into Amazon's Alexa. But in 1998... well, apparently it was the first year that officials used electronic displays during games. There were also a number of World Cup video games, including a ridiculous-looking Japanese arcade game and the first FIFA World Cup game from EA Sports — but these came out during the pre-Cup hype period, not the event itself. Fortunately, the World Cup wasn't the only thing people were writing about this week in... |
GUNSHIP’s retro synth music is deeply rooted in geek nostalgia Posted: 14 Jul 2018 10:00 AM PDT A couple of years ago, UK-based electronica band GUNSHIP released their debut, self-titled album, along with a meta video for its lead single, "Tech Noir", which expressed its love for the 1980s and era of VHS blockbuster videos. The band just announced its sophomore album, Dark All Day, and it retains that same sense of nostalgia that's fueled stories like Ready Player One and Stranger Things. The band has been busy lately. Last year, it released a song on a companion EP for a documentary about 1980s retro synth, The Rise of the Synths, called "Vale of Shadows," which the band described as its tribute to Netflix's Stranger Things. Earlier this spring, the band released a single called "Art3mis & Parzival," their interpretation of... |
9 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 14 Jul 2018 09:00 AM PDT A couple weeks ago, I watched Scott Pilgrim for the first time since I saw it in theaters. I was really worried I wouldn't enjoy it anymore, but, fortunately, I was very wrong. The film is absolutely a time capsule, and there's a lot to unpack (good and bad). But the filmmaking is also so marvelously, intricately done that it's really hard not to find something to admire. The things that really slipped my mind were the transitions. Director Edgar Wright is constantly shifting and slamming from one scene and location into another like little magic tricks, transforming an object, person, or sound from one location so perfectly into another, creating a result that feels both funny and action-packed, even when nothing's happening. Obviously,... |
How watching the World Cup final might affect your health Posted: 14 Jul 2018 07:00 AM PDT France and Croatia's soccer teams will face off this weekend in a World Cup final that's sure to make pulses spike. After all, Apple Watches registered soaring heart rates when the World Cup match between Colombia and England ended in a close penalty shootout, The Independent reports. Days later when Croatia played Russia, Verge tech editor Natt Garun's Fitbit recorded her heart rate rise above 100 beats per minute as she watched the game. "It was a tense game!" she told me in a Slack message. "When it went to penalty, I was literally holding my face." The last time she'd seen her pulse spike like that while seated, she was on a roller coaster. It didn't stop there: in the semifinal match when Croatia beat England in overtime to claim a... |

2018 World Cup finals: how to watch France vs. Croatia online Posted: 14 Jul 2018 06:01 AM PDT Are you ready for some football? No, it's not time for the Super Bowl. It's the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the biggest football (okay, fine, soccer) tournament in the world. This year's tournament kicks off today in Russia. Matches will run over the course of the next month, leading up to the finals on July 15th at 11:00am ET / 8:00am PT. Since the matches are taking place in Russia, the games will air pretty early if you live in the US, with the final — airing at 5:00pm local time if you're in Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow —set for Sunday morning. So that means you'll probably want a way to keep up with the matches when you're away from your TV. You can check out the full schedule here to see when your favorite teams are playing.
