Elon Musk says SpaceX is building a ‘kid-sized submarine’ to rescue trapped soccer team

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 02:04 PM PDT

Just days after engineers from SpaceX and the Boring Company traveled to Thailand to assist with the rescue of a soccer team trapped in the Tham Luang cave complex, CEO Elon Musk says that they are working on a "tiny, kid-size submarine" constructed out of parts from a Falcon 9 rocket.

Earlier this week, Musk noted that they were considering a couple of options, from drilling holes into the cave, to constructing an inflatable tube, to some kind of Kevlar escape pod. Since then, he says that their "primary path" is a submarine constructed out of a liquid oxygen transfer tube as a hull, which would be small enough to fit into the cave, but also light enough to be carried to the trapped children by divers.

MoviePass says it will refund users who were affected by last night’s outage

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 11:07 AM PDT

Last night, MoviePass customers encountered a problem when they went out to their local theater: an outage prevented some users from checking in to a film. While the company says that the issue has been resolved, and that it'll reimburse customers who paid out of pocket for tickets, it's not a good look for the service, which can't afford to scare away users.

The outage prompted outcry from users, and it couldn't have come at a worst time: Friday night as Marvel's Ant-Man hit theaters. In a tweet, the company advised users to wait to check in for the outage to be resolved, but said that anyone who purchased a ticket without the service could take a picture and send it in to be reimbursed.

In The Robots of Gotham, AI has taken over the world — and become exactly like us

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 10:00 AM PDT

Todd McAulty's debut novel The Robots of Gotham walks us through a familiar scenario: what if robots took over the world? In his future, McAulty's robots are benevolent monarchs, bloodthirsty tyrants, and unknowable gods who hold all the cards against humans. Set in a future Chicago after America has collapsed under robot rule, the book examines how humans cope in this future where they have little power, and how unexpected heroes can come out of the woodwork.

Set 60 years into our future, The Robots of Gotham depicts a United States that lost all of its allies. It fearfully passed a law banning artificial intelligence, then was blamed for an all-out war, after several infant AIs were corrupted. In the aftermath of a human-robot world...

7 new trailers you should watch this week

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 09:00 AM PDT

I don't entirely understand how it happened that 'film analysis videos' became such a big thing on YouTube. I suspect a lot of it is thanks to how fun and accessible Tony Zhou's videos were — but even before him, creators like Kogonada (who went on to direct his own, acclaimed feature) were making film essays.

Nowadays, the genre is so big that there's also a lot out there that… isn't great. But this week, a film essay got posted that's absolutely worth sharing: it's an hour-and-a-half-long breakdown on film structure and how endings work from Michael Arndt, the screenwriter behind Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3.

I watched the entire thing over the past few days, and while I'll be the first to admit that it's really long, it's also...

This weekend’s best deals make the latest TVs and games more affordable

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 08:00 AM PDT

As the summer heat wave rolls over most of the country, it might make more sense to stay inside to escape the higher temperatures, and it'll be a good time to evaluate whether or not it's time to upgrade your television or other devices around the house. There's some big deals coming on tech products like 4K LED televisions, computing accessories, the Amazon Echo Show, and more.

Of course, July 16th marks the beginning of Amazon Prime Day, but hopefully there's still a bit of wiggle room in your budget, as most of the products below likely won't be a part of Amazon's big day-and-a-half sale.

Nazi paraphernalia is still being sold on Amazon, report finds

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 07:00 AM PDT

In the latest of several similar controversies, a new report released on Friday finds that Amazon continues to facilitate the sale of hateful merchandise, including Nazi paraphernalia.

The report was published by two advocacy groups, the Partnership for Working Families and the Action Center on Race & the Economy, and found, among other examples of items sold on Amazon's platform, a swastika pendant, stickers with Nazi imagery, and a German SS hat. While it's unclear how much of the merchandise was actually sold, the report notes disturbing examples of items apparently targeted toward children, like a Nazi-themed Pepe the Frog fidget spinner and a child's onesie with a burning cross.

In 2015, during a public outcry over the display of...

Wired headphones are having their quartz moment

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 06:00 AM PDT

Beoplay H6.

Film cameras. Vinyl records. Paper books. Mechanical watches. And now wired headphones.

There are some classes of personal technology that refuse to die, no matter how much more convenient, compatible, or simply cheaper their successors become. Wired headphones are under no immediate threat of extinction, but the future of personal audio will be defined and dominated by their wireless peers, that's already clear. The question then arises, in my head at least, as to the role and prominence of wired cans in our ever more technological future, and the closest analog I can find is that of analog watches.

Back in the 1970s, the quartz revolution transformed the entire watch industry. Quartz clocks were vastly more accurate and mechanically...
