Moviepass losses jumped from less than $3 million to $126.6 million in a year Posted: 14 Aug 2018 05:31 PM PDT Moviepass parent Helios & Matheson has quietly posted its quarterly earnings report, revealing that operating losses have ballooned from less than $3 million this quarter last year to $126.6 million in the three month period ending June 30, 2018. Losses undoubtedly stem from Moviepass' struggle to generate revenue from its theater subscription service, which launched just under a year ago for $9.95 a month after the company sold a majority of its stake to Helios & Matheson. The report also shows that the Moviepass parent burned through more than $219 million in Q2 2018 — or approximately $73 million a month — with only $51.4 million left. That run rate is more than triple the $21 million a month rate we... |
Verizon’s 5G home internet launch will come with free YouTube TV or Apple TV 4K Posted: 14 Aug 2018 04:34 PM PDT Verizon today announced that Google and Apple will be its first video streaming launch partners when the telecom's 5G broadband service arrives later this year. It also revealed its fourth and final launch market, Indianapolis, which joins the previously announced Houston, Sacramento, and Los Angeles. The announcement today confirms a previous rumor late last month; customers who sign up to Verizon's 5G home internet service can choose to receive a free subscription to YouTube TV or an Apple TV 4K device (but not both.) In addition, they'll also be able to access content from NFL, NBA, and news from Verizon's own media network, Oath, reports Bloomberg. If you're wondering whether you'll find leftover content from the defunct Go90 app,... |
This cruel Bud Light smart fridge unlocks only when the Cleveland Browns win Posted: 14 Aug 2018 02:21 PM PDT Football season is almost here, and Bud Light has put together something special for the fans of the eternally suffering Cleveland Browns: Cleveland Browns Victory Fridges, a bunch of custom-made, internet-connected fridges that will only open when the Browns manage to snap their winless streak (currently at 17 games and counting). It's a fun promotion with some impressive technical effort behind it, but there's just one problem: those fridges will never need to open. Bud Light claims that the fridges are kept shut with an elaborate locking system whereby the chains holding the doors closed (and the beer inside) are help up by an internal magnet, synced together with the other Browns Victory... |
TechDen fights your kids’ tech addiction using... a box Posted: 14 Aug 2018 01:49 PM PDT Here's one way to get kids off the phones they won't put down: hide them in a high-tech box. TechDen, which is currently being funded through a Kickstarter campaign, claims to "help kids develop healthy screen habits," by combining an app to manage your child's screen time with a literal white box that stores and charges up to two phones or tablets. It can also recognize each device, and send parents notifications about which devices are charging and which are currently in use. Parents can create designated "sessions" — routine windows of time where their kids can use their phone — and set up a maximum allowable screen time within each of these windows. For example, a session could be an hour before bedtime, and the maximum amount of... |
Instagram now lets you send private polls through DMs Posted: 14 Aug 2018 01:36 PM PDT Starting today, you'll be able to send polls through direct messages in Instagram. It works the same as adding the poll sticker to your stories, but now, you'll be presented with the option to send the story to your own selection of users. Everyone in the group chat will be able to view the poll results as they vote in real time. It's not as groundbreaking of an update as, say, the ability to mute your friends' posts, but it's still a useful tool for when you just want to poll a small group of relevant people, like a dinner party or family members. The poll sticker has been available for Stories since last October, and since then, it has been joined by the Emoji slider and the Questions sticker. Instagram is going full-force to increase... |
HQ Trivia introduces an Apple TV app to less efficiently play with friends Posted: 14 Aug 2018 12:55 PM PDT HQ Trivia might be waning in popularity, but it's not dead yet. Now, it's getting an Apple TV app so that you can more easily — but less efficiently — play with friends, via TechCrunch.
It's a move that makes a lot of sense, partly. HQ has always chased the classic game show presentation that shows like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? or Jeopardy made famous. So making the jump to an actual TV feels like a natural extension of that. And playing on a TV, in theory, makes it easier to play HQ with more friends and family members. But the problem is: if you're... |
Apple wants to build a custom health chip for processing biometric data Posted: 14 Aug 2018 12:06 PM PDT Apple is working on a dedicated custom health chip that would help it process biometric data from its suite of devices, according to job listings unearthed by CNBC today. The company currently designs custom chips for its iPhone and is rumored to switch to custom processors for its Mac line of computers as early as 2020. Currently, the Apple Watch is powered by the custom S3 chip. CNBC reports that these new job listings indicate Apple would like to go one step further with regard to health data and integrate a custom chip that would be solely responsible for processing metrics like heart rate and helping improve battery efficiency on devices like the Apple Watch. |
Square Cash expands bitcoin support to all 50 US states Posted: 14 Aug 2018 11:47 AM PDT Square has expanded bitcoin support in its Cash App to all 50 US states, the company said in a tweet on Monday. The expansion comes after Square revealed in its earnings report that bitcoin had a profit margin of $420,000 in Q2, after the company spent $36.6 million to gain bitcoin support on the app but only made $37 million back. The Cash App let users make purchases with bitcoin starting in January, but it didn't offer support in New York, Georgia, Hawaii, and Wyoming because those states have more restrictions on cryptocurrency transactions. States like Wyoming and Hawaii previously required cryptocurrency companies to hold cash reserves equal to the amount of cryptocurrency funds held for customers, which made it difficult for... |
Star Trek: Discovery’s Spock will be played by Gregory Peck’s grandson Posted: 14 Aug 2018 11:30 AM PDT Earlier this summer, at 2018's San Diego Comic-Con, Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman confirmed that Spock, the beloved half-Vulcan second-in-command of the original Star Trek's U.S.S. Enterprise, would be appearing in the newest Trek series. After much searching, CBS has announced that the show has cast the role. Ethan Peck, whose previous credits include playing Patrick Verona (the Heath Ledger character) in the TV adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You — and who also happens to be the grandson of legendary actor Gregory Peck — will fill the TV shoes of the late Leonard Nimoy. (Peck is not related to Zachary Quinto, who currently plays the character in the film franchise, but there certainly is a non-familial... |
Windows 10 users can now try Microsoft’s Your Phone app to mirror phone content to a PC Posted: 14 Aug 2018 11:23 AM PDT Microsoft started testing its Your Phone app with Windows 10 Insiders last month, and now the company is making it available to all Windows 10 users. If you're running Windows 10 with the latest April 2018 Update, Your Phone is available to install from the Microsoft Store. The app mirrors phone content to a PC, but currently only supports Android devices and the ability to drag and drop photos from a phone to a PC. Microsoft is also planning to add support for text message sync and notifications from Android phones to mirror to a PC at some point in the future. Microsoft had been testing Your Phone as part of the company's upcoming Redstone 5 update for Windows 10, but it now appears it will be made broadly available without the... |
