Disney and Marvel put Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 production on hold Posted: 24 Aug 2018 04:54 PM PDT Production for third installment in Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has been put on hold, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Following Disney's firing of James Gunn, who directed and wrote the first two Guardians films, over 10-year-old joke tweets, the movie's fate has been up in the air. Now, it appears that its eventual filming is in a greater state of flux, as crew members who were prepping for pre-production in the fall have been told they're free to take other work. THR sources describe the move as "temporary," designed more as a "regrouping" for Disney and Marvel. Disney is reportedly keeping Gunn on as writer to use his script, but it's been scouting around for a new director, one presumably untouchable by... |
Anyone with an Amazon account can now make a collaborative wish list Posted: 24 Aug 2018 03:48 PM PDT At long last, Amazon has made collaborative wish lists and shopping lists available to everyone. That means that now you can pool together your vacation gear needs or requests for party gifts into one list multiple people can edit. At the end of July, Amazon announced the feature was slowly rolling out, but the company hadn't said when everyone would get the feature. In the past, users had to share their lists with people if they wanted to let people know what they were asking for. (Wedding registry is an exception where users had been able to work off a collaborative list in the past.) Collaborators can now add or remove products, comment on selections, make suggestions, or buy it themselves. You can also... |
YouTube expands non-skippable ads to more creators Posted: 24 Aug 2018 03:41 PM PDT YouTube is expanding non-skippable ads on its platform. Today, the company announced that all creators who can already monetize content on YouTube will soon be able to turn on non-skippable ads on all videos. The change is rolling out next week and eligible creators will get a notification in their dashboard. Advertisers usually pay creators more for non-skippable ads, so this could be a way for YouTubers to incentivize creators to stick around on its platform and produce more content, with each ad sale earning the Google-owned company a cut. If a creator turns on non-skippable ads, even previously published videos on their channel will be able to make use of them. YouTube is also adding a tool to let creators bulk add or remove... |
Fortnite’s lightning rift has created a purple interdimensional cube Posted: 24 Aug 2018 02:53 PM PDT For a day, the desert portion of Fortnite's island kept getting struck by lightning bolts emanating from a rift in the sky. Nobody knew what it meant — the only thing that seemed clear was that the strikes were getting faster, and that every so often, a new cactus on the map would get destroyed. This evening, it seems that the lightning strikes are done, and they've been replaced by something even more mysterious. Unlike the original rift event, which was broadcasted in advance by developer Epic Games, the end of the lightning phenomenon seemed to happen randomly and with comparatively little fanfare — some people may have missed it. Fortunately, some players managed to capture the climax, and the proverbial fireworks are a sight to... |
The courageous iPhone headphone dongle is obviously the most popular Apple accessory at Best Buy Posted: 24 Aug 2018 02:52 PM PDT It's an understatement to say that Apple makes lots of popular products that people like to buy: iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and more. But none as apparently as beloved as the 3.5mm headphone jack to Lightning port dongle — at least, if Best Buy's sale data is anything to go by, according to a report from Ceros (via 9to5Mac). Yes, as the chart indicates, the humble $9 dongle has dominated as the most purchased Apple product at the blue-and-yellow hued electronics store since Q2 2017, overtaking the previous champion: the three-foot-long Lightning cable. (As a caveat, Ceros' data doesn't include iPhones — which can be explained either by how Best Buy counts different SKUs, the fact that for whatever reason Best Buy may not sell many... |
Instagram is testing college community groups Posted: 24 Aug 2018 02:14 PM PDT Instagram is testing out a feature that groups users into college community lists, according to a CNBC report. It's a move following the beginnings of parent company Facebook, which started out as a college-exclusive social networking platform. The service is intended for students currently enrolled in university, excluding alumni. Some users have been prompted to join their college community to connect with other students, which adds the user to a class-based list. Joining the group lets the user add their university and graduating year to their profile. Users can view the group members' public Stories and direct message them from the community lists. It's odd that verification... |
Posted: 24 Aug 2018 01:45 PM PDT Multiple members of Congress, including Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, wrote a letter to the Federal Trade Commission today demanding an investigation into Verizon's data-throttling practices surrounding emergency response workers. The letter comes after documents filed this week detailed how Verizon throttled firefighters' data connections while they were battling the Mendocino, California wildfire. The company wouldn't restore the firefighters' data speeds until they upgraded their plan at double the price, despite already subscribing to an unlimited plan. The letters says: "The FTC must investigate whether Verizon and other communications companies are being unfair or deceptive in the services they're offering to public... |
Google Assistant is coming to LG’s ThinQ TV in seven more countries Posted: 24 Aug 2018 01:27 PM PDT LG's 2018 lineup of AI-enabled ThinQ TVs are getting Google Assistant functionality in many of its international markets. Starting today, Google Assistant will be available in Canada, Australia, and the UK, with support coming to South Korea, Spain, France, and Germany by the end of the year. LG's ThinQ TVs came with integrated Google Assistant when they launched in the US and added support for Alexa commands soon after. The built-in ThinQ AI, which runs on LG's own WebOS can be used for TV-specific commands, such as "search for the soundtrack of this movie," while Google Assistant and Alexa can be used as a smart home hub. You can basically use the TV the same way you'd use your Google Home by speaking... |
Facebook is testing a label that will highlight what you have in common with randos Posted: 24 Aug 2018 01:24 PM PDT Facebook wants to highlight the similarities between its users. The company confirmed to CNET today that it's running a small test in the US of a feature called "things in common" that'll call out the various things users might have in common with random strangers they come across on the platform. You might see the label above someone's name when browsing through a comments conversation, so it could highlight that you both went to the same school, for example, or that you're from the same hometown. The company says it'll only display publicly available information. "Knowing shared things in common helps people connect," a Facebook spokeswoman told CNET in a statement. "We're testing adding a 'things in common' label that will appear... |
MoviePass forces annual subscribers into monthly memberships Posted: 24 Aug 2018 12:56 PM PDT The struggling movie subscription service MoviePass has sent an email to members who have annual subscriptions, forcing them onto the same terms as monthly subscribers and offering them prorated refunds if they want to cancel their membership instead. "We want to thank you for being a loyal member of our annual MoviePass plan. "After experimenting with different models and options, we believe that our current monthly plan captures the need of our community — keeping prices low while continually striving to offer a wider selection of films."
