More people watched the Logan Paul vs KSI fight on Twitch than on YouTube Posted: 25 Aug 2018 02:49 PM PDT After months of hype, YouTube superstars Logan Paul and KSI finally exchanged blows today in front of millions of people. The official way to watch this fight was supposed to be a pay-per-view stream on YouTube that costs $10, but it seems most fans found alternate ways of watching the event. Pirated broadcasts of the boxing match seemed to be everywhere on social media: on Twitter, one top stream had 70,000 people tuning in on Periscope, and there were other ones floating around, too. Live-streaming platform Twitch seemed to be the destination of choice for most people looking for unofficial broadcasts, however, given that the top content at this very moment is the fight. At its height, over a million people were using Twitch to watch... |
Posted: 25 Aug 2018 01:00 PM PDT It hasn't been a good week for telecommunications companies: security researchers have uncovered security flaws with systems at AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile that could have left customer data accessible to bad actors. Yesterday, BuzzFeed News reported two flaws that left customer information information vulnerable at AT&T and T-Mobile. In T-Mobile's case, an "engineering mistake" between Apple's online storefront and T-Mobile's account validation API allowed for an unlimited number of attempts on an online form, which would allow a hacker to use commonly-available tools to guess an account PIN or the last four digits in a customer's social security number, in what's called a brute-force attack. A similar problem occurred with phone... |
Apple is giving new iCloud subscribers 200GB of space for free for two months Posted: 25 Aug 2018 12:05 PM PDT Apple has a new deal for US customers who haven't signed up for iCloud yet. 9to5Mac spotted a Reddit thread that pointed to the deal: new subscribers on the four big US carriers can get 200GB free for two months. The deal appears to be only be available in the US for customers who haven't signed up for the service yet. As to be expected, there's some fine print: those customers will be charged $2.99 a month after that two month window. As my colleague Chaim Gartenberg noted back in May, it's certainly an obvious ploy on Apple's part to get customers signed up for its services, and it's a bit irritating, especially if you've already plunked down hundreds of dollars for a new device. Plus, Apple already... |

Automakers are tapping nostalgia to promote electric cars — and it’s working Posted: 25 Aug 2018 11:00 AM PDT Automakers around the world have spent the last few years promoting hybrid and electric drivetrain technology in order to show how they're thinking about the future. But lately, some of them are looking back to the past to promote these new technologies. Friday was the first day of the annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, one of the ritziest car shows in the world. Staged along the California coast, the opening ceremonies featured appropriately outlandish announcements (like the $5.78 million 1,500-horsepower Bugatti Divo). But a few companies also went right for the nostalgia jugular. Infiniti kicked off the show with its new Prototype 10, an all-electric racer that the company says "recaptures the spirit of early speedsters for an... |

9 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 25 Aug 2018 09:00 AM PDT As August draws to a close, I've been reflecting that this is one of my favorite times of year. It's not that my birthday is coming up (don't ask when, and don't ask how old). It's because Halloween is just around the corner. I grew up on scary and spooky movies, whether it was A Nightmare on Elm Street, Poltergeist, or the Friday the 13th series. Later on, I ran across classics like Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist, and foreign films from masters like Dario Argento. But no matter how old I got, I never lost my love for the run-up to Halloween. There's something about the crispness of the air, the turning of the leaves, and the idea of walking through a crowded street dressed… well, dressed as just about anybody. Maybe it's the... |
Fortnite’s best moments are being ruined by in-game murder Posted: 25 Aug 2018 09:00 AM PDT Fortnite would not be the phenomenon that it is today without the one-versus-one-hundred concept: conflict is the lifeblood of a battle royale game. While the pastel-colored shooter has arguably put its own spin on the genre through lighthearted additions like shopping carts, the other big draw is the world-building and status of the island. But Fortnite's win condition is starting to feel at odds with what keeps me coming back to play the game. Earlier this week, Fortnite captured the attention of players through a mysterious desert occurrence — every so often, a lightning strike emerged from the in-game rifts. Players predicted that it was leading up to something, as the timing of the strikes didn't seem to be random. Good luck to... |
A new app will let you read comics on the Nintendo Switch Posted: 25 Aug 2018 08:07 AM PDT The Nintendo Switch is a versatile device: it's super portable, and the availability of apps like Hulu means that it's more than just a gaming device. Now, you can add reading comic books to the list of things you can do with it. An app called InkyPen will launch in November, and will give players the ability to read thousands of comics on the device via a subscription. InkyPen released a short teaser earlier this week that shows off the app in action. Readers use the controls to scroll in and around the pages in handheld mode or in TV mode. A monthly subscription (priced at $7.99 a month) will grant users access to the company's full catalog when it's released in November. According to io9, that catalog will include comics from... |
