Posted: 04 Aug 2018 02:18 PM PDT

Sir Patrick Stewart will reprise his iconic role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek series for CBS All Access. Stewart made the announcement today at this year's Star Trek convention in Las Vegas.

In June, CBS signed a five-year deal with Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman to oversee all of the network's efforts with the franchise. The deal included several shows in development, including a Starfleet Academy series, a series based on Wrath of Khan, a limited series, and an animated series. At the time, there were rumors that the franchise would return to the Next Generation era, with Stewart rumored to return.

7 new trailers you should watch this week

Posted: 04 Aug 2018 09:00 AM PDT

After watching screenwriter Michael Arndt's videos on storytelling the other week, I wanted to go and watch something he'd written. So I rented Toy Story 3, which I'd missed when it came out. And true to his video, it really did follow the structure he'd broken down, right to the two-minute climax bookended by betrayal and hopelessness.

What I think is really wonderful about the film though is that it ultimately brings it all back to the human characters, which is a hard feat given that they're barely in the movie. But the toys' own emotional journeys mirror that of their owners. So when it does conclude on the human characters, we're able to tap right into what they're feeling.

Of course, Pixar has always been ludicrously good at that....

Amazon devices at Prime Day prices is the best deal of the week

Posted: 04 Aug 2018 08:00 AM PDT

While some weeks are better than others to find a discount on big-ticket items, like a television, camera, or sound system, this week is good for stocking up on the smaller stuff.

If you're headed back to school, or just want to see a handy list of gadget ideas for wherever you call home, check out The Verge's Back to School 2018 guide. It's full of stuff that we recommend, and likely contains at least a few things you didn't know you needed until now.

Until the end of Saturday, Best Buy is offering Amazon devices at Prime Day prices — even beating Amazon's lowest prices in some cases.

AMC is developing a sci-fi show based on Ken Liu’s short stories

Posted: 04 Aug 2018 07:33 AM PDT

Ken Liu is one of science fiction's most celebrated writers working today. In addition to translating Cixin Liu's acclaimed Three Body Problem and Death's End, he's also earned numerous awards, most significantly for his short story, "The Paper Menagerie". Now, it looks as though his works could reach a new audience: AMC is developing series based on his works called Pantheon, according to Deadline.

If it's produced, Pantheon will be an animated show "based on a series of short stories by [Liu] about uploaded intelligence," reports Deadline. Craig Silverstein, who created and produced AMC's American revolution drama Turn, will serve as showrunner, producer, and writer.

The network has set up a writer's room to develop the series,...

Satellite rescue mission: this week in tech, 20 years ago

Next week is the start of annual gaming convention Quakecon, where we're likely to see some news about Fallout 76, the latest installment in a franchise that hit its two-decade anniversary last year. Inspired by Fallout 76 coverage like this essay from my colleague Patricia Hernandez, I started replaying the original 1997 Fallout this summer, then I got sucked into a vortex of Black Isle Studios games. The upshot is that I've spent an embarrassing amount of the past two months clicking through isometric battles and dialog trees, and I have no idea when or how I'll break free, so it's fair to say the late '90s is on my mind a lot lately.

Unfortunately, Fallout 2 isn't turning 20 until late September, so there's no news on that front here....

Nikon’s teasing its full-frame mirrorless camera with a series of cool videos

Posted: 04 Aug 2018 06:41 AM PDT

The most exciting announcements in the photography world over the past few years have featured one of two things: mirrorless designs that makes the camera smaller and lighter than it would otherwise be, or a full-frame sensor to produce the best possible images. And the most fun cameras have been, of course, the ones that combine the two, like Hasselblad's X1D or Sony's A7 III. Nikon has been awake to this trend, which has prompted the venerable Japanese company to jump in the fray with its own full-frame mirrorless camera set to be announced on August 23rd.

The teaser website for this upcoming launch is being steadily populated with a set of well-produced teaser videos. So far, we have the one above, which channels a bit of Interstellar...

This homemade literary quote clock is the best way to recycle an old Kindle

Posted: 04 Aug 2018 06:00 AM PDT

Recycling old gadgets is always a good thing, and hardware hacker Jaap Meijers may have come up with the best use for an old Kindle yet: converting it into a clock that (fittingly) tells the time through literary quotations, via Gizmodo. And better yet, unlike many of these types of projects, Meijers has posted full and clear directions for the process if you'd like to try to recreate your own.

The core of the hack is pretty simple; you'll first need to jailbreak your Kindle, then run it on a custom software Meijers developed to display a different image each minute. The quotes themselves are crowdsourced from The Guardian, which asked its readers to compile the quotes a few years back. That said, there's no reason why you couldn't use...

The 8-year-olds hacking our voting machines

Posted: 04 Aug 2018 03:00 AM PDT

It's been a rather grim week in the social-media-and-democracy cinematic universe, so let's end on a positive note … that starts on a grim note!

"Voting systems in the United States are so woefully hackable, even an 8-year-old could do it." So begins Issie Lapowsky's look at a competition to be hosted next week at Def Con, the venerable hacking conference in Las Vegas. The competition in question is being hosted by the Democratic National Committee, who you might remember from such previous hacks as the 2016 presidential election.

Here's Lapowsky on how it's going to work:

The contest will include children, ages 8 to 16, who will be tasked with penetrating replicas of the websites that secretaries of state across the country use to...
