The feeling of online is ennui Posted: 05 Aug 2018 12:17 PM PDT Time spent online is largely time spent feeling jaded, with brief interruptions for grimaces (seeing a bad post) and half-smiles (seeing a good one). Rare is the content that can evoke a genuine feeling. And yet, there's so much of it! Given that most of us are connected to the internet most of the time — desktops and laptops at work and school; smartphones at work and school and home and anywhere else that has a viable cellular connection — that means mindless boredom has reached an unimaginable scale, and that it's simultaneously way more profound than it was in the '90s, when it was a dominant cultural force. (And anyway, now that everyone's online, good posts are becoming harder to find.) That uniquely internet feeling can be... |
Venezuela says that assassination attempt against its president was carried out by drone Posted: 05 Aug 2018 10:10 AM PDT The Venezuelan government says that President Nicolás Maduro survived an assassination attempt during a live speech on Saturday. The attack was reportedly carried out with a pair of drones laden with explosives, which detonated near his position. Maduro speaking at an event commemorating the 81st anniversary of the country's National Guard in the nation's capital, Caracas. Midway through his speech, a bang can be heard, after which Maduro and the people surrounding him look up, before the camera abruptly cuts to Venezuelan soldiers scattering in the streets. Shortly after the incident, the country's Minister for Communications and Information confirmed the attack, and indicated that the explosions came from "drone-like devices that... |

Google Maps now depicts the Earth as a globe Posted: 05 Aug 2018 09:00 AM PDT Google introduced a new update to Google Maps: when you zoom all the way out, the Earth will no longer be displayed as a flat surface, but as a globe. It's a change that allows the map to more accurately display the Earth. The search company highlighted the change on its Google MapsTwitter feed, saying that with the new 3D Globe Mode, "Greenland's projection is no longer the size of Africa." The change is only available on the desktop interface; it's still flat in its mobile app.
Up until now, Google Maps has... |
Gnog turns puzzle boxes into fun dioramas Posted: 05 Aug 2018 08:00 AM PDT It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend. In a way, puzzle boxes are the purest type of game. They have a simple objective — open the box — and the actual game is figuring out how to do that. There isn't really a tutorial or rules, just things you intrinsically pick up as you fiddle and poke at different parts to find the solution. That physicality is a big part of the experience as well, which is perhaps why some of the most successful digital puzzle boxes are on devices with touch interfaces. Gnog is a game about solving puzzle boxes from developer KoOp. It was... |
Farewell to USA’s Colony, a rare dystopia that tried something new Posted: 05 Aug 2018 07:00 AM PDT At San Diego Comic-Con last month, the USA Network went all out promoting their newest show, a series adaptation of the popular anarcho-dystopian Purge movie franchise, with a delightfully satirical "Purge City" activation. At the same time, away from the promo-heavy celebrations, though, the network was quietly putting its elder dystopian offering out to pasture: that Saturday, Deadline reported that USA had canceled totalitarian-alien-invasion drama Colony after just three seasons. Co-created by Ryan J. Condal and LOST alum Carlton Cuse, the series explored a future in which mysterious, technologically advanced aliens have invaded earth, dividing it into walled-off "colonies" to extract the planet's resources, including human labor.... |
The Minecraft movie lost its director and its 2019 release date Posted: 05 Aug 2018 06:18 AM PDT A planned film adaptation of Minecraft won't come out as planned. The film was scheduled for release next May, with director Rob McElhenney (known for playing Mac on the FXX comedy Always Sunny in Philadelphia) at the helm. But according to TheWrap (via Polygon), McElhenney has left the project. This isn't the first time an adaptation of Minecraft has had trouble. Word broke that Warner Bros. first began work adapting the game in 2014, with Shawn Levy (Night in the Museum, Stranger Things) in talks to direct. McElhenney later boarded the project in July 2015, with Wonder Woman screenwriter Jason Fuchs brought in to write the script, after Microsoft acquired game developer Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2016. In light of the change, the film... |
