Apple now offers instant credit toward new devices when trading in online

Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:40 PM PDT

Apple has updated its GiveBack program, allowing customers to trade in old devices to offset the cost of purchasing a new one even when buying online, as spotted by 9to5Mac.

Previously, the only way to immediately receive a credit to use against new purchases was to visit a physical Apple Store. Using Apple's trade-in program online required shipping your device and waiting for an Apple gift card or debit card. Now, Apple has updated its website to indicate that a credit for trading in an old device can be used right away when buying a new one online.

Now customers will see the GiveBack prompt on the "buy" page for all products. If the online form is used, only a couple of questions and a serial number...

Emoji couples might come in 55 gender and skin tone combinations next year

Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:21 PM PDT

The next generation of emoji might have options to represent a full swath of different couples holding hands, accommodating different genders and skin tones. The news comes from a blog post by the Unicode Consortium, the organization behind the emoji we know and love. It's narrowed down the shortlist of new emoji we'll be seeing in 2019 to 179 in total.

Making up a large chunk of those new emoji are 55 characters to represent couples of different genders and skin tones. A new emoji — a standing person — will be used to create the couples. By placing two of these emoji side by side, they'll merge into one, showing a couple holding hands. It'll support the skin tone options already offered.

According to the blog post,...

This custom Fallout computer case brings you a piece of the Wasteland

Posted: 09 Aug 2018 02:42 PM PDT

The Fallout franchise is making its next appearance outside of your gaming system — as artwork to decorate your computer case. Gaming hardware maker NZXT will be producing officially licensed Fallout-themed computer cases, starting with the H700 Nuka-Cola. NZXT only made 2,000 of these limited edition cases featuring the game's most popular soft drink.

Fallout developer Bethesda Softworks describes the case as "a piece of the Wasteland," and from the rear, it clearly resembles a soft drink vending machine from one of the games. The steel chassis has a tempered glass side panel, a bar to keep your cables in place, and support for AIO coolers. There's also water-cooling and a perforated metal mesh to keep the airflow going.

The artwork...

Samsung made a fast new dual wireless charger that props up your phone

Posted: 09 Aug 2018 01:50 PM PDT

Samsung has a new dual wireless charger that seems designed for its new Note 9 and Galaxy Watch. The Wireless Charger Duo has two charging pads, with a flat area meant for the new Galaxy smartwatch and a propped up charging spot for keeping a phone display visible during a charge.

Each charging pad has 12W of charging power, so both pads will support fast charging from Samsung or any other phone vendor. Together, the two pads resemble one of Samsung's propped up charging pads glued together with one of its flat charging pads. While Samsung already sells another dual wireless charger, that one has two flat charging pads. This is the first dual wireless charger that lets you watch shows or check texts while charging your...

Trump’s PAC wants to know which Space Force logo you like best

Posted: 09 Aug 2018 01:38 PM PDT

This morning, Vice President Pence detailed the administration's plans to create a Space Force, and now the Trump PAC wants to know which logo to use for the new branch of the military. The Trump Make America Great Again Committee emailed supporters today asking them to vote on six different Space Force logos. The plan is to create a "new line of gear" based on one of the designs.

All six are stylized like the traditional mission patches that accompany most space launches. One of them seems to be the NASA logo but red and yellow. Another proclaims "Mars Awaits," though the Space Force really has nothing to do with Mars. Instead, it's about reorganizing the way the military procures satellites and trains personnel.

Samsung’s Fortnite exclusive will expire before the Note 9 even launches

Posted: 09 Aug 2018 01:33 PM PDT

Fortnite is making its way to Android, but not until Samsung device owners get a stab at it first... for a measly couple of days. At the Samsung Unpacked event on Thursday, the Fortnite team announced that Samsung users will be on the receiving end of an unusually short exclusive, ending well before the Galaxy Note 9 is released near the end of the month.

In the next few days, the game will be made available for all other supported Android devices, so Pixel users and others won't have to wait too long to start building forts and cracking open pink llama piñatas. According to a spokesperson for Epic Games, the company has yet to disclose exactly when the Android beta will be fully released. At the event, it was announced that it would be...

Alleged new Palm smartphone is tiny, strange, and has low-end specs

Posted: 09 Aug 2018 01:11 PM PDT

If you're a fan of classic Palm devices and the company's legacy, you might want to be sitting down for this one. Android Police just published images of what is said to be an upcoming Palm-branded smartphone from TCL and it's... definitely bizarre. The quirky device, codenamed Pepito, has a 3.3-inch 720p display. That's smaller than the original iPhone's screen, if you're trying to imagine scale. It's also tinier than the screen on the last phone that Palm ever shipped — the Pre 3 — back it was still owned by HP.

There's only one side button visible on this thing. The Pepito — look, at the very least, I'm digging saying and writing that name — is apparently headed for Verizon Wireless. It'll have a Snapdragon 435 processor, 3GB of ram,...

Samsung’s Galaxy S9 still comes with a free Chromebook from Amazon

Posted: 09 Aug 2018 12:49 PM PDT

Samsung's brand-new Galaxy Note 9 is perfect for people who want an immense amount of storage, a large screen, and some clever S Pen functionality, but its $999 starting price certainly isn't cheap. It's worth remembering that you can get a lot of what's good about the Note 9 in the Galaxy S9, and it'll cost you less money.

Amazon is running a deal on the S9 and S9 Plus that tosses in a Samsung Chromebook 3 for free. Starting at $719, you can buy the S9 with the Chromebook 3. If you want the S9 Plus instead, that will cost $839. Both of these prices reflect how much each phone costs to buy unlocked, but you're also getting a free Chrome OS laptop.

The Note 9 will definitely be a better choice for some, but if you're loading up on tech...

Microsoft’s latest Surface Pro firmware update fixes Surface Pen accuracy issues

Posted: 09 Aug 2018 10:46 AM PDT

Microsoft is addressing Surface Pen accuracy issues with its latest Surface Pro tablet. Hundreds of Surface Pro owners have been complaining about Surface Pen problems with the device for months, noting that the Surface Pen becomes inaccurate when you rest your hand on the Surface Pro screen. Microsoft has been investigating a fix, and the latest Surface Pro firmware update (available on Windows Update) now addresses problems with palm rejection affecting Surface Pen accuracy.

Affected users have confirmed pen strokes are now fully accurate when resting a hand on the Surface Pro screen. Microsoft's latest Surface Pro isn't the only device to experience strange screen-related issues in the Surface lineup. Earlier this year Microsoft...

YouTube now recommends the best phones for video playback, and it doesn’t suggest an iPhone

Posted: 09 Aug 2018 10:39 AM PDT

At its Note 9 announcement today, Samsung boasted the new phablet is a "YouTube Signature Device" for 2019. If you haven't heard of that certification before, that's because it's a brand-new program YouTube just launched. The YouTube Device Report recommends the best smartphones, which it calls "signature devices," for watching YouTube. These phones feature the ability to watch 360-degree footage, support for high dynamic range, high frame rate, 4K decoding, next-generation codecs, and reliable DRM performance. Google says its team evaluates each device and works with manufacturers to fix video playback performance and capability issues.

The report launches with 18 devices, with the aforementioned Note 9 alongside other popular...
