PlayStation 4 reportedly crashing due to malicious message Posted: 13 Oct 2018 05:05 PM PDT Numerous PS4 owners on Reddit and across social media are warning of a message containing a string of characters that can reportedly cause Sony's console to seize up and crash. In some cases, the console gets so mixed up from this glitch that users are performing a factory reset on the hardware to get it working normally again. We've seen bugs just like this on mobile platforms, where a certain message or strange character can wreak havoc and cause unstable behavior. If the reports are true, Sony will likely act quickly to roll out new system firmware that eliminates the issue. After all, this company loves issuing updates that improve system performance and stability. To avoid any headaches until this gets sorted out, below are some... |
Posted: 13 Oct 2018 12:00 PM PDT Welcome to Fav'd For Later, a If you're on Twitter and are a fan of Tessa Thompson, you may be familiar with @tessasgoats, the Twitter account that does exactly what it says on the label: pair photos of Thompson with photos of goats wearing similar outfits, hair colors, and the like. It would have been like any other celebrities-as-animals account, except it somehow made its... |
Richard Branson suspends Saudi Arabia’s investment in space ventures over missing journalist Posted: 13 Oct 2018 11:00 AM PDT Richard Branson, founder and chairman of space tourism venture Virgin Galactic, says he is temporarily suspending his partnership with Saudi Arabia, which means the company may lose its promised $1 billion investment. The decision is directly related to questions surrounding Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi, who went missing after stepping inside the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey on October 2nd. Last year, the Virgin Group announced that Virgin Galactic and its spinoff companies, The Spaceship Company and Virgin Orbit, would receive an investment of $1 billion from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The money was meant to help further the development and testing of Virgin Galactic's spaceplane, which is meant to take... |
The Pyua is the proper way to enshrine and play classic Nintendo games Posted: 13 Oct 2018 10:00 AM PDT We're big fans of Swedish designer Love Hultén, whose many retro creations have blurred the line between gadget and art piece. His latest, the Pyua, is both a tribute to Nintendo and console compatible with classic NES and Famicom cartridges. Hultén says the Pyua functions, "without input lag or degradation to the original games." The Pyua can output up to 1080p via an HDMI cable and comes with two custom wireless NES controllers, built by the nostalgic folks at 8BitDo. If you're lucky enough to have a Pyua — Hultén occasionally makes his creations available for commission — you'll have a display case that doubles as a console for your classic Nintendo games, plus wireless controllers, and... |
New trailers: Aladdin, Pet Sematary, Good Omens, and more Posted: 13 Oct 2018 09:00 AM PDT Often when I'm scrolling through movies on Netflix, HBO, or some other streaming service, I feel like I've wasted so. much. money. going to movie theaters. Inevitably, everything shows up online and ready to stream, and instead I've spent more than $30 for a pair of tickets to go see these same titles just months earlier. For whatever reason, I didn't make it out to movie theaters at all this summer or much this spring, either. And I kind of thought, well, at least it'll all be online soon. But maybe I've been wrong all along — the wait between theatrical screenings and online streamings now feels endless. I'm scrolling through lists of movies I've already seen, waiting for new ones to finally arrive. Maybe the key is to wait even... |
Snapchat’s Cat Lenses lets you take even more ridiculous pictures of your pet Posted: 13 Oct 2018 08:59 AM PDT If you've ever wanted to take a really goofy picture with your cat, Snapchat has rolled out a new update that will help you with that. The company has released a new feature called Cat Lenses, which lets you add filters to your favorite feline's face. TechCrunch pointed out that the system appears to build on an object recognition update that the company rolled out last year. That update recommends certain filters when it recognized certain object in your image, or could potentially serve you up a sales page to easily buy said object. This is a bit more of a frivolous (but entertaining) use for that update, but we're always taking ridiculous pictures of our pets — why not give them googly eyes or a toast hat while you're at it? |
Twitter is facing an investigation over data collection in its link-shortening system Posted: 13 Oct 2018 08:38 AM PDT Privacy regulators in Ireland have launched an investigation into exactly how much data Twitter collects from t.co, its URL-shortening system. The investigation stems from a request made by a UK professor named Michael Veale under the General Data Protection Regulation (or GDPR), a comprehensive European privacy law that took effect in May. Under the GDPR, EU citizens have a right to request any data collected on them from a given company — but when Veale made that request to Twitter, the company claimed it had no data from its link-shortening service. Veale was skeptical, and wrote to the relevant privacy regulator to see if Twitter was holding back some of his data. |
This week’s deals will save you money on the new Echo Dot, Pixel 3 preorders, and more Posted: 13 Oct 2018 08:00 AM PDT This week gave us a healthier variety of deals than usual. Whether you're interested in a new smartphone, gaming consoles, smart speakers, or smart displays, there's a lot to parse through, and that trend is going to continue through early 2019. The Google Pixel 3 can now be preordered, and there are a few special offers for those who buy in early. Both Verizon and Google's Project Fi are offering buy-one-get-one promotions for the new phone, though each have different terms. Verizon's BOGO deal is limited to the 64GB Pixel 3, and works for both new and current subscribers. If you purchase the Pixel 3 at Best Buy, you can get a $100 gift card with purchase. The promo at Project Fi, on the other hand, is only valid if you're adding... |
Martha Wells’ Murderbot series is a fantastic story about what it means to be human Posted: 13 Oct 2018 07:00 AM PDT Last year, Martha Wells published All Systems Red, the first installment of a Tor.com novella series called The Murderbot Diaries, which follows the adventures of the titular android as it is pulled into various adventures while traversing inhabited space. Wells earned considerable acclaim for All Systems Red: it became a New York Times bestseller, and earned her the Hugo and Nebula Awards earlier this year. Since then, she's published three new installments concerning the adventures of the titular android — the last one came out earlier this month. Individually, they're an intriguing set of adventures. But collectively, they form a larger story about a machine coming to understand what it means to be human. All Systems Red introduces... |
Marvel’s Iron Fist won’t get a third season on Netflix Posted: 13 Oct 2018 06:04 AM PDT Marvel's Iron Fist won't get a third season. Disney has confirmed that it has canceled the show, but hinted that it might not be the end of the road for the superhero. Iron Fist is one of several in a joint Marvel/Netflix shared universe, set alongside Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and The Punisher. It follows billionaire Danny Rand (Finn Jones), who reappears after vanishing fifteen years ago, who trained as a monk to become a martial arts master known as the Immortal Iron Fist. The series just aired its second season on Netflix back in September, and coupled with a new showrunner, it improved over its lackluster first season. In a joint statement, Marvel and Netflix say that it's thankful to the fans who watched the two... |
