Apple says cheap battery replacements hurt iPhone sales

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:51 PM PST

Apple just revealed it's expecting a $9 billion loss in revenue due to weak iPhone demand that's partly caused by more people replacing their batteries, according to a letter issued by CEO Tim Cook addressed to investors.

Last year, Apple admitted it was throttling older iPhone models to compensate for degrading batteries that caused the phones to sometimes shut down. It offered to cut its $79 battery replacement fee down to $29 as a way of apologizing.

The lower fee coupled with the greater transparency meant that more people in 2018 ended up swapping their batteries — instead of upgrading to the latest iPhone models, it turns out. Now that...

Apple says it could miss $9 billion in iPhone sales due to weak demand

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 01:49 PM PST

Apple CEO Tim Cook published a letter to investors today warning of weaker than expected first-quarter earnings, citing "fewer iPhone upgrades than we had anticipated." The weakened demand came primarily from China, although Cook notes that "in some developed markets, iPhone upgrades also were not as strong as we thought they would be."

In his letter, Cook offers several explanations for the lower earnings guidance: earlier launch timing of the iPhone XS and XS Max compared to the iPhone X, the strength of the US dollar, supply constraints due to the number of new products Apple released in the fall, and overall economic weakness in some markets. But the core issue remains...

This is the pop culture that helped us survive 2018

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 11:46 AM PST

As always, the first days of January are a time to look back on the previous year and wrap it up into a neat package, usually by thinking "Oh geez, did that actually happen last year? It feels like that was a decade ago." That's why it can be fun to look back on our favorite things of the year, the culture that endured with us past release weekend or the latest news cycle. Here's what made a difference to us in 2018.

When Noelle Stevenson's Netflix reboot of She-Ra: Princess of Power dropped its first preview images online, a familiar dank, never-pleased subsection of the internet started griping about them. But a completely different area of the...

First close-up images of NASA’s New Year’s target reveal a lumpy snowman

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 11:25 AM PST

This afternoon, scientists on NASA's New Horizons mission shared the first close-up images of the distant, frozen space rock their spacecraft whizzed by on New Year's Day. The pictures bring the strange object into a clearer focus — and it looks like a lumpy snowman. In fact, it's not really one object, but two lobes that are touching each other, what's known as a contact binary.

The images were taken on January 1st around 12:33AM ET, when the New Horizons spacecraft sped past the rock at a whopping 32,000 miles per hour. The vehicle, which came within 2,200 miles of the object's surface, used all seven of its onboard instruments to gather as much data as it could about the rock during the flyby. Those instruments included two cameras...

Hackers are taking over Chromecasts to promote PewDiePie’s channel

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 11:07 AM PST

A message from the hacking duo on YouTube.

Two hackers have teamed up to promote Felix "PewDiePie" Kjellberg by forcing TVs to display a message encouraging people to subscribe to his YouTube channel. The hack takes advantage of a router setting that makes smart devices, like Chromecasts and Google Homes, publicly viewable on the internet. The attackers are then able to gain control of the devices and broadcast videos on a connected TV.

The attack, which is being referred to as CastHack, is being conducted by two hackers, HackerGiraffe and j3ws3r. A website for the attack claims to count the number of TVs forced to show the PewDiePie message and currently says more than 3,000 have been affected. While it's not clear that this is an accurate number (it has reset several times), a...

Volkswagen’s mobile charging station will help solve a key problem with EVs

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:43 AM PST

Volkswagen has an interesting solution to the dilemma of owning an electric vehicle without a permanent place to charge it: they'll bring the charging station to you.

The German automaker offered a glimpse of its new mobile charging strategy last week, which envisions mobile charging units that can be delivered directly to electric cars in need of power, rather than frazzled EV owners having to use their last bit of juice to find the closest charging station. These portable DC charging stations could be perfect for owners who, for example, live in cities, park their cars on the street, or lack a garage where they can charge their EVs overnight. It's a helpful strategy that could go a long way toward making EV ownership in big cities...

August’s leaked smart doorbell actually looks like a doorbell this time

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:44 AM PST

August appears to be close to launching a redesigned doorbell camera as its first new hardware since being acquired by the giant lock conglomerate Assa Abloy in 2017. Dave Zatz uncovered images of the new doorbell, which looks like a big improvement from the company's original model that didn't look much like a doorbell at all.

The doorbell could be launched alongside a chime, according to Zatz. The chime accessory doesn't appear to have a name yet, but it would be a smart addition for August since competitors like Arlo and Ring already offer similar options.

There's no word yet on a release date or pricing — August hasn't even announced the devices yet — but with CES 2019 around the corner, we might not have to wait too long before we...

Google’s project to control gadgets with touchless hand gestures is moving forward

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:41 AM PST

Google just got one step closer to the possibility of controlling a smart device through hand gestures from afar. It won federal approval to continue its tiny radar project from 2015, "Project Soli," at higher power levels for better accuracy.

Google has been working on this in its experimental division for years. Instead of tapping directly on a screen, the project proposed using gestures like rubbing your thumb and index finger together to control a smartwatch or smart speaker.

With this technology, you could potentially turn on a JBL smart speaker by moving a hand closer to it or turn music on or off with a flick of your fingers. The tiny radar sensors inside the speaker would sense your hand motions.

After its initial debut as a...

Ring security lights all but confirmed by FCC filing

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 08:35 AM PST

The Ring Beams Spotlight appears to be the smaller, battery-powered model.

A trio of outdoor security lights from Ring have leaked via a series of FCC filings. The documents, which were first spotted by Dave Zatz, indicate that Ring is preparing to launch three new outdoor lights — its first that won't also include a security camera. One model, the Ring Beams Spotlight, is battery-powered and has a single LED light. A second, the Ring Beams Wired Floodlight, is a bigger, wired device that's equipped with two lights. There's also the Ring Beams Pathlight, a much taller light that looks like it's designed to illuminate a garden walkway.

The leaks come less than a week before CES 2019 is due to start, where Ring is likely to announce new products. It's been almost a year since the Amazon-owned Ring acquired Mr...
