Ser Pounce, Game of Thrones’ beloved fan-favorite cat, was killed off-screen Posted: 11 Feb 2019 03:26 PM PST Game of Thrones' eighth season hasn't started yet, but showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that at least one fan-favorite character won't make it out of the final season alive: Ser Pounce, Tommen Baratheon's pet cat, who was introduced back in season 4. Spoilers for previous Game of Thrones seasons ahead. According to Benioff, "Cersei hated the name 'Ser Pounce' so much she could not allow him to survive. So she came up with her most diabolical [execution]. Ser Pounce's death was so horrible we couldn't even put it on the air." Ser Pounce's death may not come as much of a surprise, given that the cat only appeared in a single episode, back in season 4's "Oathkeeper."... |
Humans playing VR game Beat Saber move faster than what Steam thought was ‘humanly possible’ Posted: 11 Feb 2019 03:09 PM PST Some people move so fast when they play the VR game Beat Saber, a rhythm game that's basically Dance Dance Revolution with lightsabers, that Valve developers have had to issue a fix. People were moving so fast that Steam VR couldn't track their movements, as spotted by Kotaku. After collecting the data on Beat Saber experts, Valve developers had to issue a fix to the trackers in Valve's Lighthouse technology that tracks movement. On the latest changelog for Steam VR today, developers noted that they had to "Increase limits of what we thought was humanly possible for controller motion." A developer elaborated further in the comments that "a properly motivated human using a light enough controller could go faster (3600... |
Earth is dying and this couple is crowdfunding a sex button Posted: 11 Feb 2019 03:04 PM PST Millennials have killed many things: cable television, golf, McDonald's, and now, apparently healthy sexual relationships. A new gadget currently being Kickstarted called "LoveSync" is the Amazon Dash button for horny men and women who don't feel comfortable telling their partner they'd like to have sex. Instead of leaning over and vocally asking your girlfriend or boyfriend, the LoveSync button does it for you. Essentially, there are two buttons — one for you, and one for your partner. If you're feeling horny, you tap your button, which sends a signal to your partner's button, basically asking if they'd also like to have sex. Your partner then has two options: they can either tap the button back, letting you know they're ready to get... |
Apex Legends has hit 25 million players after one week Posted: 11 Feb 2019 02:59 PM PST Apex Legends, the free-to-play battle royale game from the creators of Titanfall, has just passed 25 million registered players after just one week since its release, developer Respawn Entertainment announced this afternoon. The milestone shows just how explosively popular the game has become in such a short time; just three days after release, Apex Legends passed 10 million players. Additionally, the game recorded "well over" 2 million concurrent players this past weekend, Respawn CEO Vince Zampella noted on Twitter. Now, of course, the game is free and available on consoles and PC, which makes these milestones not easily comparable to standard video game sales. But, compared with its biggest competitor Fortnite, Apex Legends would... |
Pixar’s new YouTube short plays like a companion piece to Wall-E Posted: 11 Feb 2019 02:29 PM PST When Pixar Animation Studios first introduced the SparkShorts series in January, the studio explained that the short films came from a program of "indie filmmaking inside of Pixar." Creators are given six months and a small budget to make their own unique projects. The latest of those shorts, Smash and Grab, just debuted on YouTube, and it may seem a bit familiar to longtime Pixar fans — it features robots with a minor resemblance to the protagonist of Pixar's Wall-E, from the head-cocked expressions and grabby gimbaled hands to the expressive mechanically irising eyes. Like Wall-E, these robots are in a repetitive, thankless job, but have seen the possibility of something more in life. In an accompanying one-minute behind-the-scenes... |
Zero-rating programs increase wireless data prices, according to new study Posted: 11 Feb 2019 02:00 PM PST A lack of net neutrality rules can have real-world consequences on wireless data prices, according to a new study by Epicenter.works. The new data from dozens of countries in the European Union suggest that when a country allows zero-rating programs, it ends up seeing an increase in wireless prices over time. Zero-rating programs (like AT&T not counting DirecTV toward a customer's data usage) can allow people to use specific apps and services without the data used going toward their monthly data caps. At face, it looks like a pretty solid deal for consumers, but in the long run, critics of the programs have suggested that they could end up having anti-competitive effects. This multi-year study by Epicenter.works found that countries that... |
Amazon is buying mesh router company Eero Posted: 11 Feb 2019 02:00 PM PST Amazon has announced that it's acquiring Eero, the maker of mesh home routers. Amazon says buying Eero will allow the company to "help customers better connect smart home devices." It will certainly make Alexa-compatible gadgets easier to set up if Amazon also controls the router technology. Financial terms of the deal are not being disclosed. "We are incredibly impressed with the Eero team and how quickly they invented a WiFi solution that makes connected devices just work," Dave Limp, Amazon's SVP of devices, said. "We have a shared vision that the smart home experience can get even easier, and we're committed to continue innovating on behalf of customers." Eero kicked off a wave of "smart" mesh router setups designed to overcome the... |
Baidu made a smart cat shelter that uses AI to tell cats and dogs apart Posted: 11 Feb 2019 01:54 PM PST China's top search engine company Baidu made a smart cat shelter in Beijing that uses AI to verify when a cat is approaching and open its door. The cat shelter is heated and also offers cats food and water. Besides running China's main search engine, Baidu also works on AI tools in general and owns iQiyi, a Netflix-like rival that uses algorithms to determine what viewers may be interested in watching next. While cat shelters ordinarily seem out of the scope of what Baidu does, the company says that the idea first came to one employee, Wan Xi, who uncovered a small cat hiding in his car last winter and began to sympathize with the plight of other stray cats. Wan then apparently shut himself at home to develop software and work on a... |
The Handmaid’s Tale returns for its third season on June 5th Posted: 11 Feb 2019 01:29 PM PST Last May, we learned that Hulu's spectacularly dystopian The Handmaid's Tale would be returning for a third season, and last week's Super Bowl gave us a tease — now, Hulu is confirming that the award-winning drama will debut on June 5th. That's when the first three episodes of the show will arrive, assuming you're still willing to grit your teeth and bear the torture and mutilation the series makes its women endure — in exchange for, occasionally, the barest glimpse of hope that they might escape and survive a totalitarian United States where they are torn from their children and turned into sex slaves to produce sons and daughters for families favored by the corrupt government. Or an eerily plausible cautionary tale of what might... |
Tinder and Grindr are being questioned about age verification after a report on child abuse Posted: 11 Feb 2019 12:54 PM PST Tinder and Grindr are facing new scrutiny over their age verification practices after a report found several examples of children being abused after signing up for dating apps. Yesterday, the United Kingdom's Sunday Times reported that law enforcement officials in the UK have investigated more than 30 cases where children evaded age requirements on dating apps and were later raped, according to public records obtained by the outlet. The report also found another 60 cases involving sexual exploitation of children on dating services. The United Kingdom Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright told the publication that his office was investigating. "I will be writing to these companies asking what measures... |
