Shazam! finally lets DC superheroes be joyous fun

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 03:01 PM PDT

Shazam! takes place in the same universe as other films adapted from DC Comics, but writer Henry Gayden (Earth to Echo) and director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) seem determined to turn that universe upside down. Or at least, they want to blow a raspberry at the glum-and-glummer world established by the Zack Snyder trilogy of Man of Steel, Batman V. Superman, and Justice League, plus their neck-tattoo-sporting companion piece Suicide Squad. The first big-screen starring vehicle for one of the oldest superheroes in existence, a kid who can turn into a superpowered grown-up with the help of a magic word, Shazam! would be tough to turn into a grim-and-gritty DC story.

And that's because it's too deeply based in childhood fantasy. One...

A New Jersey high school adapted Alien for its spring play

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 11:07 AM PDT

Like something out of Rushmore or Bob's Burgers, a group of highly-motivated students and teachers in New Jersey staged an elaborate play based on Ridley Scott's classic science fiction film Alien earlier this week as spotted by The AV Club. It's not your typical high school spring play.

North Bergen High School's drama club staged the play on the 19th and 22nd this past week, and one of the school's students posted some details about the production on Reddit. They noted that it follows the plot of the film, "with a few scenes added to kill time for scene changes," (which apparently included the Xenomorph walking amongst the members of the audience). The school put together a trailer for the production earlier this month.

Want more Love, Death + Robots? Read these 17 short stories online

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 10:00 AM PDT

Last week, Netflix released its 18-episode animated anthology Love, Death + Robots, a decidedly NSFW series that adapted a number of short stories from well-known science fiction authors. It's clear from watching the series that there's a nearly endless supply of source material out there for another season, if Netflix green-lights one. While we wait to see whether that happens, we've rounded up some recommendations for a good season 2, and we've got 17 recommendations that you can read online now (along with a couple of deep cuts that you'll have to hunt for.)

Love, Death + Robots' episodes are often heavy on the violence and body horror. One story in that range is Charlie Jane Anders' "Don't Press Charges and I won't Sue," which was...

12 new trailers you should watch this week

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 09:00 AM PDT

On Monday, Apple is supposed to unveil its take on a movie and TV streaming service. It's not clear if it'll be a full-on Netflix competitor, or if it'll basically be a digital take on the cable bundle with some bonus Apple-made original content thrown in. But either way, we're about to get another major player in the streaming battles.

On one hand, the emergence of all these streaming services has been amazing for content — there are way more companies willing to pay way more money for TV shows and movies than there were just a couple years ago. On the other, it means piecing it all together as a viewer is harder than ever, with great shows and movies locked into services you may only have a limited interest in subscribing to.

Apple’s next iPhone might be able to wirelessly charge other devices

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 08:34 AM PDT

Huawei and Samsung recently introduced a helpful feature in some of their latest phones — the ability charge other devices wirelessly off of the new phones, allowing you to share a bit of your battery life in a pinch. Japanese blog Macotakara (via 9to5Mac) reports that Apple's next iPhone might include the feature.

The blog cites Chinese suppliers, which back up an earlier report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that claimed that the the 2019 iPhone would get such a feature, along with upgraded cameras and a bigger battery. The site also notes that the forthcoming iPhone might come with a new charging cable and the 18W charging port that comes with the iPad Pro, although it won't utilize USB-C.

The new iMac is $200 off, and PlayStation Plus subscriptions are 25 percent off

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 08:00 AM PDT

Several of the week's best deals have been happening for the past few days, but they're worth highlighting again.

The new iMac with a Retina 4K display is $200 off during the preorder phase at B&H Photo. This model features an 8th Gen Intel Core i3 processor, AMD Radeon Pro 555X discrete graphics, and of course, a 4K screen. One major downside is its 1TB 5,400RPM hard drive, which is embarrassingly slow for a modern computer, regardless of who manufactures it. If you're all right with that, this is a good deal.

A 25 percent-off discount for a one-year subscription to PlayStation Plus has been a mainstay in our deals coverage this week. The subscription is usually $59.99, but you can get it now for $44.99.

A first look at Microsoft’s new Chromium-powered Edge browser

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 07:28 AM PDT

Microsoft is rebuilding its Edge browser on Chromium. The software maker has been testing versions of this browser internally at Microsoft, and now The Verge has secured an exclusive first look at the early work thanks to a source who wishes to remain anonymous. While the previously leaked screenshots made Edge look very similar to Chrome, Microsoft is adding its own touches and animations to make it look and feel like a Windows browser.

When you first install the Chromium version of Edge, Microsoft will prompt you to import favorites, passwords, and browsing history from Chrome or Edge (depending on your default). The setup screen also prompts you to pick a style for the default tab page before you start browsing.

‘I finally cracked it’: An abridged history of Apple’s TV efforts over the years

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 07:00 AM PDT

Apple has been trying to do something big with TV for more than a decade, dating all the way back to when it first previewed the "iTV" streaming box in 2006. Years later, Apple is still trying to break into the TV industry with its biggest push yet: a streaming service expected to be announced at the company's upcoming "It's show time" event on March 25th, complete with original Apple-produced TV shows and movies that will be exclusive to the service.

But it's been a long road for Apple to get to this point, one filled with shifting strategies, corporate disagreements, and outright failures in negotiating with both cable companies and content providers. Below is an abridged history outlining how we got here, from rumors to hardware to...

Apple might reveal its game subscription service at Monday’s event

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 06:45 AM PDT

Apple is expected to announce new services in TV, news, and finance (with a rumored credit card linked to Goldman Sachs) at its March 25th event. But there's a chance we might also get a look at the company's iOS game subscription service come Monday, as well. Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is "discussing" the gaming service with potential partners.

Back in late January, Cheddar first reported about the service, which would let users play a bundle of games in exchange for a monthly fee. If the news subscription service is being referred to as the "Netflix for news or magazines," then this would be a similar concept focused on gaming.

For the game bundle subscription, Bloomberg notes that Apple is "likely considering" paid games...

Sticking a leather cover on my laptop seemed like a good idea

Posted: 23 Mar 2019 06:00 AM PDT

Until it fell victim to the Flexgate calamity, my MacBook Pro had been spending the past few months comfortably ensconced in a stick-on Toast leather cover. I've always been a fan of phones with leather backs, so when the opportunity arose to have the same on my laptop, it just seemed like a good idea. Or, at the very least, a fun one. I'm not sure I'd do it again, but I can recount the lessons I learned along the way for anyone else who might be curious.

Toast is a small Portland company that does business the way you might imagine a firm from that city would: everything is "proudly designed & handcrafted" in the USA, there's an emphasis on care for the environment, and you can customize a bespoke design. In an effort to show off the...
