US cyberattack reportedly hit Iranian targets Posted: 22 Jun 2019 06:26 PM PDT Yahoo News is reporting that a "retaliatory digital strike against an Iranian spy group" was carried out this past Thursday. The Washington Post, The New York Times, and the Associated Press all confirmed the report with their own sources, including the further detail that the cyber attack was approved by President Donald Trump. It was the same day that Trump called off airstrikes against Iranian targets. The target of the attacks was an "intelligence group" that either has ties to or is part of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, depending on which report you read. That group had been connected to recent attacks on commercial ships in the region, according to Yahoo News. The Post says that the attack was "crippling to Iran's military... |

Neon Genesis Evangelion is the perfect story for this moment in history Posted: 22 Jun 2019 10:00 AM PDT Neon Genesis Evangelion has returned for a second life on Netflix, legally available for the first time in a couple decades. Watching Neon Genesis Evangelion in 2019 is fascinating for a number of reasons — namely, seeing what a new generation of people will make of the show — but the most interesting is the new world it's been released back into. The anime was always apt, but in the two decades since the original series was first broadcast on TV Tokyo, it's become the ideal anime for our time; thematically, the series is about the awful courage needed to stop an oncoming apocalypse, and what the people charged with protecting everyone else are obliged to cope with. Neon Genesis Evangelion was critically acclaimed and beloved on its... |
7 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 22 Jun 2019 09:00 AM PDT Last weekend, I went to see The Last Black Man in San Francisco, and it just does so many things so well. But of all those things, its sharpest feature is its ability to tell big stories in a small way, and it does that again and again. My fiancée compared the beginning of the film to the beginning of Up, telling essentially the complete story of the movie in a succinct, beautiful, heartbreaking few minutes. It's such a stunningly confident intro, too, that you go into the movie with an immediate sense of awe and wonder. My favorite instance of this kind of storytelling, though, is a brief gag in the middle of the movie, where a naked man sits down beside the protagonist on a bench. We see him as a weirdo at first, but the film flips it... |
The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is cheaper than ever today Posted: 22 Jun 2019 08:00 AM PDT There have been a few good deals worth checking out this week, but the best one comes in today from Amazon and Walmart. Both retailers have cut the price on the iPad Pro (12.9-inches, 64GB, WiFi) down to $824.99. That's over $150 off of its usual $999 price. This is the lowest price that we've seen for this model, and it makes deciding between the 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPad Pros a little tougher. If you value screen real estate, the larger iPad Pro is the clear winner. However, if you want something that's easier to tote around, you can get the 11-inch iPad Pro with 256GB of internal storage at Amazon for $824.99, the same price. Whichever model you decide on, both will be compatible with the new iPadOS software that's coming soon.... |
One of the creepiest series in YouTube history is now a decade old and can’t seem to die Posted: 22 Jun 2019 07:00 AM PDT Ten years ago this week, a video appeared on the Something Awful forum describing a trove of unlabeled tapes that had been recorded as part of a student film project. The director had supposedly instructed for the tapes to be burned. But years after the project was suddenly ended, the video's narrator reveals that he kept them intact and decided to parse through the footage. "Should I find anything in any of them I will upload it to keep as a permanent record," the narrator wrote. Within a few uploads, the audience was subjected to a slew of clues as to what drove the director to cancel the project. The tapes were filled with shots of eerie symbols and a tall, creeping figure without a face and dressed in a suit. These videos were some... |
Microsoft bans Slack and discourages AWS and Google Docs use internally Posted: 22 Jun 2019 06:06 AM PDT Microsoft has banned the use of the free version of Slack for its 100,000+ employees. GeekWire reports that Microsoft has a list of prohibited apps and services, and even Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Docs are "discouraged for use" inside the company. The Slack ban isn't primarily driven by Microsoft's competing Teams product, though. Microsoft is reportedly concerned about the security aspects of Slack Free and Slack Plus. An internal entry describes the situation:

This robot ‘duck’ could help Japanese rice farmers keep paddy fields clear of weeds Posted: 22 Jun 2019 06:00 AM PDT For centuries, rice farmers in Asia have used ducks as a natural alternative to pesticides. While paddling around in flooded paddy fields, ducks tear up weeds and snack on insects, with their manure even acting as additional fertilizer. In the 21st century, this practice is not widespread, but a new technological twist on the method could change that. An engineer working for Japanese carmaker Nissan has built a robot alternative to paddy field ducks. As reported by Nippon.com and Nerdist, he's currently testing his prototype in the Yamagata Prefecture in northeastern Japan. It seems it's just a DIY project at the moment, with no plans for commercialization or even any data on how effective it is, but it's a fascinating use of technology... |
Microsoft’s new Windows Terminal now available to download for Windows 10 Posted: 22 Jun 2019 02:09 AM PDT Microsoft first unveiled its new command line app for Windows, dubbed Windows Terminal, at Build earlier this year. It's a new central location where you can access the traditional cmd line, PowerShell, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). While developers have been able to compile and use the Windows Terminal from the code available on GitHub, Microsoft is now releasing an easy installer through the Windows Store today. The Windows Terminal app includes multiple tab support, alongside themes and customization for developers who want to tweak the Terminal app. You'll need to edit a JSON file if you want to get to all of the customization options right now, as this early preview doesn't have full functionality. Microsoft has some... |
