Tesla’s longtime CTO is stepping down Posted: 24 Jul 2019 04:15 PM PDT JB Straubel (middle) at Tesla's Gigafactory press preview day in 2016. | Image: Jordan Golson Longtime Tesla executive JB Straubel is leaving his post as chief technology officer after some 15 years, CEO Elon Musk announced Wednesday evening. Straubel will transition to a "senior advisor" role, according to Musk, and is not fully leaving the company. The news comes as Tesla announced a $408 million loss for the second quarter of 2019. "I'm not disappearing, and I just wanted to make sure that people understand that this was not some, you know, lack of confidence in the company, or the team, or anything like that," Straubel said on the call. "I'd like to thank JB for his fundamental role in creating and enabling Tesla," CEO Elon Musk said on a call with analysts Wednesday evening. "If we hadn't had lunch in 2003, Tesla wouldn't... |
SpaceX delays launch of new docking port to the International Space Station Posted: 24 Jul 2019 03:24 PM PDT Update, July 24 at 6:24 PM ET: SpaceX was forced to delay the launch due to bad weather over the launch site. The company will try again tomorrow, Thursday, July 25th at 6:01PM ET. Original story: This afternoon, SpaceX is slated to launch its latest cargo mission from Florida for NASA, sending about 5,000 pounds of supplies to the crew on the International Space Station. For this mission, the company is employing a Dragon cargo capsule that's already been to space twice before. If successful, it'll be the first time the same Dragon has gone on a third trip to space. Packed inside the Dragon's main storage compartment are some interesting goodies and science experiments for the crew to work with over the next few months. These include a... |
Steve Ballmer is still very hyped Posted: 24 Jul 2019 02:59 PM PDT Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images Steve Ballmer loves two things: the Los Angeles Clippers and yelling. A press conference earlier today allowed the former Microsoft CEO, and current chairman for LA's second-favorite NBA team, to celebrate both. Ballmer officially welcomed Kawhi Leonard, the NBA's most sought-after player and the man who helped lead the Toronto Raptors to their first ever NBA championship earlier this year, and Paul George to the Clippers. As seen in the clip below, today was important for Ballmer. He could barely even get through his speech before whooping and pumping his arms in the air.
"I have these notes, but I'm just fired up to be here... |
Palmer Luckey’s border surveillance startup is getting $13.5 million to monitor Marine Corps bases Posted: 24 Jul 2019 02:16 PM PDT An Anduril Lattice sentry tower | Anduril Industries Government documents reveal that Anduril Industries, the surveillance startup founded by Oculus Rift inventor Palmer Luckey, received a US Marine Corps contract earlier this month. The $13.5 million contract covers "autonomous surveillance counter-intrusion capabilities" at four Marine Corps bases — two in Japan, one in Hawaii, and one near the US-Mexico border in Yuma, Arizona. The Marine Corps contract was officially awarded on July 15th, according to a Federal Business Opportunities notice. Further documents, published by Latinx activism organization Mijente under the Freedom of Information Act, say that Anduril will be providing surveillance "capability as a service" — which means it will be shipping, installing, and maintaining its... |
Hulu is developing a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy TV series Posted: 24 Jul 2019 02:04 PM PDT Image: Touchstone Pictures Douglas Adams' comedic science fiction classic The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is getting a new version. Deadline reports that Hulu is developing an adaptation of the radio drama and novel with Lost's Carlton Cuse and Wonder Woman's Jason Fuchs. Deadline says that the series will be a "modern updating of the story," which follows an earthling named Arthur Dent who discovers that his house is being destroyed to make way for a highway bypass and that the Earth is in the same situation. He's rescued by an alien named Ford Prefect, a writer for a galactic encyclopedia called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Most people are familiar with Douglas Adams' novel by the same name, but Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has transformed... |
Tesla’s still losing money despite a record quarter for deliveries Posted: 24 Jul 2019 02:02 PM PDT Photo by Sean O'Kane / The Verge Tesla made and delivered more cars in the second quarter of 2019 than it did in any other quarter in company history, but still lost $408 million, according to a new filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. That's an improvement over the unexpectedly big $702 million loss Tesla posted in the first quarter of 2019, but it means the Model 3 is still not successful enough to lift the company out of the red for good. Tesla also announced that longtime chief technology officer JB Straubel is stepping down after serving in the role for some 15 years. "I'd like to thank JB for his fundamental role in creating and enabling Tesla," CEO Elon Musk said on a call with analysts Wednesday evening. "If we hadn't had lunch in 2003, Tesla... |
House approves new rules to stop robocallers Posted: 24 Jul 2019 01:34 PM PDT Photo by Scott J. Ferrell/Congressional Quarterly/Getty Images This afternoon, the House of Representatives approved an anti-robocalling measure, dialing up the heat that Congress has been pressing on telecoms and the Federal Communications Commission due to the onslaught of harmful calls over the past few years. The Energy and Commerce Committee approved the Stopping Bad Robocalls Act unanimously last week and sent it to the floor, preparing it for today's 429-3 vote. If it becomes law, the bill would make it easier for the government to impose tougher penalties on illegal robocallers and fraudsters and demand that carriers deploy call authentication tech like SHAKEN/STIR at a faster pace. "The rising tide of unlawful, unwanted robocalls started as a nuisance but now threatens the way consumers... |
Facebook confirms new FTC antitrust investigation after posting strong earnings Posted: 24 Jul 2019 01:27 PM PDT Illustration by James Bareham / The Verge Facebook's business continues to grow, largely unimpeded by the various privacy settlements, corporate scandals, and regulatory concerns over its handling of user data and other reckless practices. Yet the company announced today, as part of its second quarter earnings announcement, that the Federal Trade Commission is now officially investigating Facebook for potential violations of US antitrust law. "The online technology industry and our company have received increased regulatory scrutiny in the past quarter. In June 2019, we were informed by the FTC that it had opened an antitrust investigation of our company," reads the company's earnings release. "In addition, in July 2019, the Department of Justice announced that it will begin an... |
Roku is testing its own Wi-Fi extender to improve streaming reliability Posted: 24 Jul 2019 01:12 PM PDT Roku is making a Wi-Fi extender called the Roku Relay, which is meant to improve wireless connections inside a home and improve reliability while streaming. The device, which has not yet been announced, is currently in testing with users outside the company, a person familiar with the tests tells The Verge. The Relay is a small white gadget that plugs into a power outlet and rests alongside the wall. Instructions show that it's meant to be used with Roku devices to improve their Wi-Fi connection; it isn't stated whether other devices can be connected to it, too. The product is seemingly being marketed as an extension of Roku players, with the manual directing people to install the Relay halfway between their router and TV. |
