Whole Foods employees demand Amazon break all ties with ICE and Palantir Posted: 12 Aug 2019 05:09 PM PDT Photo by Erik McGregor/Pacific Press/LightRocket via Getty Images Pressure is mounting against Amazon's continued involvement with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with Whole Foods employees now demanding the company cease ties with the agency through its business dealings with the controversial government contractor Palantir. The demands, posted in a public letter earlier today by the Whole Foods unionization group Whole Worker, direct harsh words at the parent company of the grocery chain, which Amazon purchased for $13.7 billion in 2013. In particular, the letter calls Amazon's rule "dystopian," and Whole Foods employees say they will continue to combat the company by leaking information and attempting to undermine policies and business dealings that lead to the deportation of... |
Twitter’s latest test makes following tweetstorms a lot easier Posted: 12 Aug 2019 03:41 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Remember the epic, fingernail-biting tale of corporate intrigue where a man got his lunch stolen at the office and caught the thief by watching security tapes over the course of two days? It wasn't easy to follow unless you were already following the user writing the tweets — but there may soon be a better way. Twitter is testing a feature to let you follow replies to individual tweets, so you can keep up with the next great Twitter saga. Here's what it looks like:
While users can... |
The Lion King remake is the biggest animated earner ever, but Disney claims it isn’t Posted: 12 Aug 2019 02:42 PM PDT Photo: The Walt Disney Company Disney's CGI remake of its 1994 film The Lion King has crossed $1.3 billion at the international box office, officially beating out Frozen's $1.27 billion to become the top-grossing animated film of all time, per CinemaBlend. That is, it's sort of the biggest animated film ever since Disney has been loath to call it an animated film at all. While it's entirely computer-generated footage (save for one shot), Disney continues to refer to it as a live-action film. That's an odd stance for the studio to take, given how often it likes to crow about its record-breaking blockbusters. But Disney has been oddly insistent on avoiding the animated label for the Lion King remake, despite the fact that it's essentially just as visually manufactured... |
Trump’s anti-bias order sounds like a nonsensical warning shot against Facebook Posted: 12 Aug 2019 02:29 PM PDT Illustration by James Bareham / The Verge The Trump administration is supposedly drafting an executive order to stop "bias" on sites like Facebook and Twitter — an unprecedented government push to control how platforms moderate content. CNN reported some broad details on the proposal, supposedly called "Protecting Americans from Online Censorship," last week. It says the White House wants federal agencies to start policing social media moderation by "clarifying" when companies can invoke an important legal shield. According to CNN, the order targets Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects websites from liability over what users post. But the president can't just rewrite the law, so he's reportedly planning to ask the Federal Communications Commission to... |
Cortana is being removed from the GLAS thermostat Posted: 12 Aug 2019 01:44 PM PDT Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge The GLAS smart thermostat, which is built by Johnson Controls, is losing its key Cortana integration. Once touted as the only Cortana-powered thermostat, Johnson Controls says it's now removing Microsoft's digital assistant from its device. A new software update is rolling out to the thermostat soon, and it removes Cortana completely. "The Microsoft Cortana voice assistant will no longer work on your device," reads an email to GLAS customers. "Moving forward, you will still have access to other voice assistants to control your thermostat through the Works with functionality of Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant." Cortana's removal from GLAS is the latest in... |
Verizon is selling Tumblr to WordPress’ owner Posted: 12 Aug 2019 01:37 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Verizon has agreed to sell Tumblr to WordPress owner Automattic Inc. for an undisclosed amount, The Wall Street Journal reports. Verizon, which first acquired Tumblr in 2017 after it purchased Yahoo, started to explore a sale earlier this year. Automattic reportedly bought Tumblr for less than $3 million, according to Axios, a stunning drop in value from the $1.1 billion Yahoo paid for it in 2013. "Tumblr is a marquee brand that has started movements, allowed for true identities to blossom and become home to many creative communities and fandoms," Verizon Media CEO Guru Gowrappan said in a statement. "We are proud of what the team has accomplished and are happy to have found the perfect partner in Automattic, whose expertise and track... |
Minecraft’s ‘Super Duper Graphics Pack’ is canceled due to technical difficulties Posted: 12 Aug 2019 01:36 PM PDT Minecraft developer Mojang is officially canceling the game's anticipated "Super Duper Graphics Pack," originally announced back at E3 2017 as a downloadable update for the popular crafting game. The graphics pack promised a massive overhaul for Minecraft, bringing features like realistic lighting and shadows, reflective water surfaces, and more lifelike flora and fauna, along with the promise of full 4K resolution for some devices like the Xbox One X. According to Mojang's post announcing the cancellation, "the pack proved too technically demanding to implement as planned," with the studio unhappy with how it performed across devices. The update was originally planned to release in fall 2017, then pushed to 2018, before being canceled... |
How to make sure you’re buying the new Nintendo Switch with improved battery life Posted: 12 Aug 2019 01:30 PM PDT Photo by James Bareham / The Verge The new hardware revision of the Nintendo Switch is now making its way to retail stores. It features a newer, more efficient CPU than the original launch console, which results in significantly longer battery life ranging between 4.5 and nine hours. (The original Switch can last between 2.5 and 6.5 hours.) Otherwise, the Nintendo Switch "v2" — not to be confused with the upcoming Switch Lite — hasn't changed much: it's got the same design and same screen. That means there's no easy way to distinguish the new, longer-lasting model from the original unless you know where to look and what to look for. Look at the boxThe easiest way to spot the new Switch is its packaging. The box for the original hardware has a white background, but this... |
LG’s upcoming G8X will be its first phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor Posted: 12 Aug 2019 01:18 PM PDT The LG G8 may have landed with more of a whimper than a bang when it came out earlier this year, but LG isn't letting that get it down, with a successor — the G8X — set to be revealed next month at the annual IFA show in Germany. And it'll apparently offer an in-display fingerprint sensor, a first for LG, if the first renders from OnLeaks are to be believed. The switch to an in-display scanner is a big change for LG, coming off the G8, which boasted no less than three different authentication methods for unlocking the phone: a rear fingerprint reader, a 3D time-of-flight camera for face scanning, and the bizarre "palm scanning" that was unique to the G8. Based on the renders, which show off a far smaller teardrop-style notch, it seems... |
The Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight, but the Moon is going to spoil the fun Posted: 12 Aug 2019 01:02 PM PDT Photo by Bob Riha Jr. / Getty Images On the evening of August 12th and early on August 13th, the Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak, with streaks of light zooming across the skies up to once every minute or so. Unfortunately, stargazers may have a tough time seeing these shooting stars this year, thanks to the light of our pesky Moon. The Perseid meteor shower occurs every August whenever Earth passes through the tail of a comet called Swift-Tuttle, a big rock about 16 miles (26 kilometers) across that orbits around the Sun. As Swift-Tuttle zooms through space, the Sun heats up the icy comet, causing a bunch of loose material like pebbles and dust to fly off. This debris forms a cloud all along Swift-Tuttle's orbital path around the Sun. The Earth barrels through... |
