A new report outlines Facebook’s struggles to develop its own hardware Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:01 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Many companies set up their own, secretive divisions to develop new devices and technologies. There's Lockheed Martin's Skunkworks division, which produced the U-2 spy plane and the SR-71 Blackbird. Apple assembled a secret working group to develop the iPhone. Facebook set up its own division as it delved into hardware in recent years. A new report from CNBC outlines the drama behind the company's secretive hardware division, Building 8, and how it struggled to develop its own hardware to compete with the likes of Amazon and Google. Building 8 is the division where Facebook has worked on some of its outlandish ideas, like a system that would allow users to type using their thoughts, modular smartphones, and ultimately, a video-calling... |
Tesla is bringing back free, unlimited charging for new Model S and X buyers Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:06 AM PDT Tesla announced today that it's bringing back a useful perk new customers who buy a new Model S or Model X vehicle: unlimited charging at its supercharger stations. The announcement comes after sales of the two models have slowed and after the company had greater-than-anticipated losses in its latest quarterly earnings report. The company made the announcement in a Tweet (via TechCrunch), saying that all new orders would come with free unlimited charging at its network of Supercharger stations.
Tesla has used free charging as an enticement for new buyers in the past. The perk extended to its Model S and... |
JY Yang’s Tensorate series is a sweeping, experimental blend of sci-fi and fantasy Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:00 AM PDT Photo by Andrew Liptak / The Ver Genre is an odd thing. At times, it's merely a sales tactic, where similar books are grouped together in a bookstore to make them easier to find. But it can also be a codified canon of literature in which authors are engaged in a decades-long conversation, bouncing themes and tropes off one another. Every now and again, a book or author will come along that really breaks away from the conversation and ignores those tropes and conventions. One recent example is Singaporean author JY Yang, who published the final installment of their genre-blending Tensorate series last month. The series is made up of four short novellas: The Red Threads of Fortune, The Black Tides of Heaven, The Descent of Monsters, and The Ascent to Godhood. It's set in... |
9 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 03 Aug 2019 09:00 AM PDT Photo: Andre D. Wagner / Universal Pictures There's been a ton of talk about how Quentin Tarantino plays with history in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But the thing about the movie that most fascinates me its structure: it is, quite frankly, kind of bizarre. As the film starts, you're waiting for the drama to hit — but it never really does. You just keep waiting and waiting, and eventually, you realize, that's what the movie is: just a long, slow series of moments with these characters as we get to know them. We all know where this is heading, the film seems to be saying, and it makes you wait for it all to pay off. I'm not sure of anything else quite like it, other than maybe a book. Tarantino has always worked with novelistic techniques like chapters and flashbacks, so that's... |
This week’s best deals include Kindle e-readers and Google Play Store discounts Posted: 03 Aug 2019 08:00 AM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Many of this week's best deals came from Best Buy, and most of them are still taking place this weekend. I've resurfaced a few of them below, including discounts on waterproof Kindles (without Amazon's annoying ads built-in), and a Ring Video Doorbell that comes with an Echo Dot smart speaker. There are other good deals to sort through, like Google Play Store's big sale, and a refurbished iPad Pro (2018) that's hundreds off of its regular price. The previous generation of Kindle Oasis with 8GB of storage and no special offers (i.e., Amazon's lockscreen ads) is $174.99 (usually $249.99) at Best Buy. This is $75 cheaper than the latest generation Oasis, which differs only in its display that allows adjustable warmth to be easier on the... |
N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth fantasy trilogy is getting an RPG Posted: 03 Aug 2019 07:55 AM PDT Photo by Andrew Liptak / The Verge N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy has become an acclaimed fantasy classic since its debut, earning three consecutive Hugo Awards in as many years. Now, fans will be able to explore the world on their own: Green Ronin Publishing announced that it'll be releasing a roleplaying game based on the trilogy. Over the course of the three novels (The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, and The Stone Sky), Jemisin introduced readers to the Stillness, a far-future Earth where the planet experiences catastrophic, civilization-ending disasters known as Seasons. What remains of humanity struggles to survive in protected communities known as Comms, sitting out the disaster to try and rebuild civilization after they come to an end. Along the way, one... |
Everything we think we know about the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Posted: 03 Aug 2019 07:00 AM PDT We're just a few days away from Samsung's big Galaxy Note 10 event, and the rumors and leaks are in full form, teasing details of Samsung's latest super-sized flagship. Or rather, flagships, plural, with Samsung expected to take a page from its own Galaxy S line's playbook and release multiple sizes of the Note 10. We already know some of the news, with Samsung announcing some of its smaller summer products — like the Galaxy Watch Active 2 and the Galaxy Tab S6 — ahead of the big Unpacked event, presumably leaving more time for the good stuff. And while Samsung isn't officially announcing the Note 10 until Wednesday, the usual flood of leaks means we already have a pretty good idea of what to expect when the company takes the stage at... |
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune will hit theaters in December 2020 Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:04 AM PDT Warner Bros. has shifted its release date for Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Dune, bumping it from its original release date of November 20th, 2020 to December 18th, 2020. The film is the latest adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic 1965 science fiction novel, set on a desert planet in a feudal galaxy. Along with the news, Warner Bros. says that the film will get an IMAX release. The new date will take up the slot that Disney's typically released its Star Wars films, ensuring that science fiction fans will get another big space opera blockbuster that month. Villeneuve comes to the film with an impressive track record when it comes to science fiction, first with his first contact film Arrival, and with Blade Runner 2049. The project... |
OpenPhone gives you a separate business line for $10 per month Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:00 AM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge If you're a creative or other freelancer work, at some point you may start thinking twice about giving out your personal phone number to your clients or business contacts. Besides the possible privacy issues, do you really want your business connections to be able to call you at any hour of the day or night — and on the same number you give your family and friends? A new service called OpenPhone says it can solve that problem by providing cloud-based business numbers for $10 per month. There are, of course, several cloud-based services that provide secondary phone numbers which can be used alongside your primary carrier-based number. To begin with, there is Google Voice, probably the best-known such service, which gives you a phone... |
