Google says Android users prefer ergonomics of three-button navigation over gestures Posted: 08 Aug 2019 04:17 PM PDT Photo by James Bareham / The Verge One day after releasing the final beta of Android Q, Google is making its most direct case yet for why Q's new gesture navigation controls are an improvement over what came before. The Verge reported on the company's reasoning earlier today, and now Google has posted a more thorough explanation to its Android Developer's Blog. "By moving to a gesture model for system navigation, we can provide more of the screen to apps to enable a more immersive experience," wrote Android UI product managers Allen Huang and Rohan Shah. No one is arguing that benefit, but the trouble Google has run into is with Android's "back" function and figuring out the best way of preserving it with gestures — and making that solution feel second nature to the end... |
Uber lost over $5 billion in one quarter, but don’t worry, it gets worse Posted: 08 Aug 2019 04:04 PM PDT Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Uber just reported its second quarterly earnings ever as a public company, and hoo boy! That's a lot of red ink! The ride-hailing giant reported losing a whopping $5.2 billion in the last three months. No, there isn't dirt on your screen. That's billion with a "b." Lyft, which reported its earnings Wednesday, fared better but still posted a loss of $644 million during the quarter. The numbers for both companies look a lot better when adjusted for things like amortization of intangible assets and stock-based compensation for employees post-IPO. Excluding those expenses, Uber lost $1.3 billion and Lyft lost $197 million. But analysts on Wall Street expected these losses, and so therefore we're supposed to shrug and say "no big whoop."... |
Posted: 08 Aug 2019 03:26 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Facebook is approaching big-name news publishers hoping to secure licensing deals to republish stories and other news content, reports The Wall Street Journal. The deals could be worth millions of dollars per publisher, with Facebook reportedly offering up to $3 million a year for licensing rights for some outlets. Among those in early discussions are Disney-owned ABC News, Bloomberg, Dow Jones (also the parent company of the WSJ), and The Washington Post. According to the report, Facebook plans to include these articles as part of dedicated news section its launching sometime this fall. Publishers would sign deals lasting as long as three years in some cases, and they would get control over how articles appear on Facebook and whether... |
Google search isn’t showing new content due to indexing issues Posted: 08 Aug 2019 02:34 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Google is having indexing issues today, meaning that some new content across the internet is not showing up in search results. A look at the Top Stories in Google News, for example, shows that while some of the stories are from the last couple hours, many are from yesterday. Search Engine Land first reported on the issues. The company confirmed on Thursday at 4:28AM ET that it was seeing reports of indexing issues, and later added that it was seeing "issues in the URL Inspection tool within Search Console." Google said that the URL issue was fixed as of 11:41AM ET, but it hasn't provided an update on indexing. Google told The Verge Thursday evening that it is working on the issue. Google is constantly crawling, or indexing, the web to... |
Bungie is launching cross-save for Destiny 2 on August 21st Posted: 08 Aug 2019 02:28 PM PDT Image: Bungie Bungie has revealed the date Destiny 2 players will be able to start moving accounts freely between platforms to be August 21st. That's when the game studio says it's expecting to launch cross-save support for the open-world shooter, a long-awaited feature only just announced back in early June. Bungie says it's launching cross-save ahead of its planned October expansion Shadowkeep to "give you the time you need to link your accounts and get your friends lists sorted before the launch of Shadowkeep and New Light." Cross-save is just one of many positive changes coming to Destiny 2 in the next few months, albeit a feature many players have requested for years and one that looked unlikely to ever arrive. But since Bungie split with... |
The FCC says 5G is safe, again Posted: 08 Aug 2019 02:19 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Federal Communications Commission officials said today that 5G is safe and the rules regulating radio emissions for safety don't need to be changed in order to accommodate it. FCC chairman Ajit Pai is proposing small changes to the way the commission determines whether radio wave emissions are safe, but those changes are only designed to make the rules more consistent across technology types, the commission said. They aren't being made any stricter, as the current limits are already "among the most stringent in the world." There has never been compelling evidence that 5G radio waves are dangerous. While they're higher frequency than the radio waves used for 4G, they remain in the part of the radio... |
Apple reveals special new iPhones for security researchers Posted: 08 Aug 2019 01:40 PM PDT Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Apple is planning to supply special iPhones to security researchers next year to help them find security flaws in iOS. The devices will be made available to researchers that report bugs through the company's invitation-only bug bounty program for iOS. Apple first launched this bug bounty program three years ago at the Black Hat conference, and it's now extending its use at the same conference today to cover macOS, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and more. Apple's iOS Security Research Device program will be available to researchers with a track record of high-quality security research on any platform, so not every regular developer will be able to access these devices. The handsets will come with ssh, a root shell, and advanced debug... |
Apple extends its bug bounty program to cover macOS with $1 million in rewards Posted: 08 Aug 2019 01:35 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Apple is finally rewarding security researchers for finding security flaws in macOS. At the Black Hat conference today, Apple announced that it is greatly expanding its existing bug bounty program to include macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and iCloud. It will include rewards of up to $1 million for a zero-click, full chain kernel code execution attack. While Apple originally started paying iOS bounties three years ago, researchers have only been paid for ones found in Apple's mobile operating system. macOS was never included, and it's led to a number of security researchers pushing the company to change course. Apple is now expanding its bug bounty program far behind just iOS. iCloud, iOS, tvOS,... |
W Hotels’ $285 mukbang room service comes with a microphone and phone stand Posted: 08 Aug 2019 01:26 PM PDT Mukbang, the South Korean phenomenon in which vloggers stream themselves eating large quantities of food, has now made its way to the W Hotel in Washington, DC. The DC location of the hotel chain is introducing its Sip & Slurp menu, an extravagant $285 room service package that comes with a lavalier lapel mic and a cell phone stand so guests can film their very own mukbangs. The Sip & Slurp menu is available until the end of 2019, and it's limited to the W Washington DC for now, though more locations may join later. The whole menu is a publicity campaign to celebrate the hotel's new $50 million renovation, but it's honestly kind of a clever way to attract guests through internet trends. Hotels are often at odds with influencers looking... |
