How to Help During a Natural Disaster Posted: 08 Aug 2019 01:00 AM PDT When a disaster strikes, many people feel compelled to help in some way, but knowing how or where to help can be difficult. There is always a need for assistance, from the time the disaster hits and sometimes for years afterwards. There are many ways that you can get involved by donating your time, money, and energy to help the people and areas that have been affected by a natural disaster. [Edit]Donating Money and Resources - Send money to a reputable national organization for disaster relief. This is the best way to help. Sending money allows the organizations to allocate funds as needed. Some trustworthy organizations to consider donating to include UNICEF, Direct Relief, or Habitat for Humanity.[1] Check the Better Business Bureau or Charity Watch online to find out if the charity you are considering donating to is reputable.[2]
- You may also consider donating money to organizations like ASPCA and the Humane Society to help animals that have been affected.
- See if the organization offers a texting donation line. You may be able to donate by simply sending a quick text to the charity's number. The charge will typically show up on your next wireless bill.
- Find local programs in your area to donate to. Visit the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster's (NVOAD) website at https://www.nvoad.org/voad-members/national-members/. This will help you to find reputable local programs in the areas affected by a disaster. NVOAD also specializes in coordinating relief efforts so that efforts aren't duplicated by multiple agencies. This works to ensure that all needs are covered efficiently.[3]
- Organize a fundraiser to raise money. Collect donations by setting up a collection jar at your school, work, or a local restaurant, or simply asking your friends and neighbors. If you have the time, plan another type of fundraiser. Fast and easy ideas include bake sales, lemonade stands, yard sales, or car washes.
- Once you have collected the money, donate it to a national organization or local program.
- Give blood at a local donation center. Your blood donation can literally help save a life, especially during disasters such as earthquakes. Check the American Red Cross website for the specific donation requirements in your area and to schedule an appointment.[4]
- You can donate blood at any time, even before a disaster strikes. Your blood will be held on reserve, and will be immediately available to use when it's needed.
- Donate clothes and household items if you live near an affected area. Search NVOAD online to find local food banks, shelters, and faith-based organizations that are providing relief efforts and to find out what items are being accepted.
- Sometimes even basic necessities, like water bottles, can't be accepted due to logistics like storage space and delivery costs, so it's best to call ahead or check online to find out what's needed.
- The supplies that are needed often depend on the type of disaster. For instance, mops, buckets, and dehumidifiers might be needed during a flood.
- While it may be natural to want to send toys to help comfort children who have been affected, toys are typically not encouraged because they are not considered an immediate need, and also due to other concerns such as storage and distribution.[5]
[Edit]Lending a Helping Hand - Volunteer at a local center if you live near an affected area. Help cook or serve food at a relief kitchen, organize donated items at a church or charity, answer phones for an organization, or deliver food and water.
- If you aren't sure how or where to help, call your local 2-1-1 line. They will be able to provide you with community information as well as ways to get involved.[6]
- Shelter displaced families and animals. There is often an immediate need for shelter, so if you have unoccupied rental property or vacation homes, this would be a great way to help. Or if you live near an affected area and have a room to spare, consider opening up your home to a family in need.
- You can list your home or room on Airbnb for free to host a displaced family.[7]
- Contact an organization like ASPCA or the Humane Society to see how you can help provide support for animals that have been affected.[8]
- Use your skills or trade to help rebuild damaged areas. There is always a great need to repair homes and buildings that have been damaged or destroyed during a disaster. Volunteering your time and energy is a great way to get involved.
- For example, if you know how to do excavation, you can help by clearing and preparing land. If you do any type of construction work, you can use your skills to repair or reconstruct homes and buildings.
- Whether you live in the disaster area or need to travel to the disaster zone, you can help with rebuilding through organizations like Habitat for Humanity. You can also help on your own by contacting your local officials to see where help is needed.[9]
- Even if you are not skilled in a specific trade, you can help with other tasks like removing debris and site cleanup, shoveling, or delivering supplies.
- Contact established organizations to find out exactly what the needs are and how you can best help. Sometimes due to things like logistics, places aren't able to accept physical items. Money or manpower may be more helpful so it can be allocated as needed.
- Always remember, even if you don't have a lot of money to give, every little bit helps.
[Edit]Warnings - Be cautious when you are donating to an unfamiliar organization or individual. Always check the Better Business Bureau or Charity Watch online first.[10]

How to Make Your Hair Look Longer Posted: 07 Aug 2019 05:00 PM PDT Waiting for your hair to grow out can be frustrating, as hair only grows about 1/2 in (1.3 cm) a month. However, there are ways to make your hair look longer in the meantime! You can create the illusion of having long hair by changing your hairstyle or adding hair extensions. Alternatively, you can make the most of your natural length and work to emphasize it through straightening, getting layers, and adding volume. [Edit]Creating the Illusion of Length - Part your hair in the middle to give the illusion of having long hair. Use a comb to divide your hair into 2 equal sections down the middle of your head. Although a center parting can elongate your face, it will also make your hair appear longer than if you are using a side parting.[1]
- While side partings add volume to your hair, this is done by adding width, which takes away from the length of your hair.[2]
- Try a double ponytail to add length and to keep your hair secured. Split your hair into halves from the top of your ears using a fine tooth comb. Tie the top half of your hair into a medium-high ponytail and then gather the bottom half of your hair, securing this into a ponytail just below the first. The 2 ponytails will blend into 1 to create a seamless look.[3]
- Tying your hair into a regular ponytail can make it look shorter than it actually is.
- Tie your hair into a donut to disguise the length. Tie your hair into a ponytail with a hair tie and place the donut form over the hair tie. Then bring the donut form to the end of your ponytail and wrap the tips of your hair evenly over the donut shape. Roll your ponytail into the donut form to create a bun that sits flat on your head. Use bobby pins to hold it in place.[4]
- When all of your hair is tied up, it is difficult to tell how long it really is. This illusion is perfect for helping shorter hair to appear long. Use a donut form or a sock to create this voluminous bun.
- Alternatively, a regular bun works well too.
- Choose clothes that make your neck look shorter to add the illusion of length. Scarves cover your neck, which means that they are great for making your hair look longer than it really is. Similarly, choose tops and dresses that have a round neckline; these also make your neck appear shorter.[5]
- Tops and dresses with round necklines, alongside scarves, help to break up your neck area which in turn makes your hair appear to reach longer at the front.
- Use hair extensions to add length to your natural hair. If you are wanting to add extra length to your hair regularly, hair extensions are a great way to do so. You can apply hair extensions to your hair either at home or at a salon. [6]
- Hair extensions also give you the added bonus of experimenting with different hair colors.
- Clip-in hair extensions work especially well because they can be very quickly placed and removed depending on what length you want to try out.
[Edit]Emphasizing Your Natural Length - Straighten your hair to make it look long and sleek. Use either a flat iron or a blow dryer to straighten your hair. Brush your hair with a boar bristle or paddle brush to stretch it out as you straighten it. Try to straighten your hair in sections so that you can concentrate on one part at a time.[7]
- Your hair will always look longer when it is straight compared to when it is wavy or curly.[8]
- Add a shine serum to your hair after you have straightened it to help it look even longer. This is because shine serum reduces frizz and makes your hair sleeker.[9]
- Add strategic volume to your roots to take weight away from the midshaft. Use volumizing products such as shampoo, conditioner, or mousse to lightly add volume to your hair at the roots. This reduces the weight in the midshaft of your hair and creates a leaner look for your locks.[10]
- Although volumizing products can help your hair to appear longer, use these sparingly and avoid weighing your hair down with too much product. This is because using too much product in your hair will make it look too controlled and unnatural.
- Do a half up top knot to emphasize the bottom layer. Separate the top section of your hair on the crown of your head and tie it up into a ponytail. Then tightly twist your hair around the base of the ponytail and secure the top knot with bobby pins. The length of the bottom layer is emphasized and this hairstyle only takes a few seconds to do.[11]
- Wear a shirt that is a contrasting color to your hair. Shirts and tops that are either the same or very similar in color to your hair can make your hair blend in. This creates the illusion that your hair is shorter than it really is. Pick tops that are bright and contrasting to your hair, as these will outline your hair and emphasize your true length.[12]
- Choose an ombre style to highlight the length of your hair. Decide where you would like the ombre to start and bleach this section of your hair. Then use the hair dye brush to apply the color according to the manufacturer's instructions. Wash the dye out after the allocated time.[13]
- A traditional ombre lightens your hair to make the ends highlighted and longer-looking. You can either do ombre yourself at home or get it done professionally at a salon.
- Get tapered layers to emphasize the length of your hair. Although it may sound counter-intuitive, getting your hair trimmed into layers can actually make it appear longer. Avoid choppy layers, as these will make your hair look short. Instead, opt for long layers as these will make your hair look lustrous and soft.[14]
- Avoid getting a blunt cut as this will make your hair look shorter.[15]
- While you are growing out your hair, still get the ends trimmed regularly. This will remove split ends and help your hair to stay healthy, which is necessary for helping it to grow longer in the long-run.[16]

How to Keep Mosquitoes Away at Night Posted: 07 Aug 2019 09:00 AM PDT The buzzing and biting of mosquitoes can be a hindrance on warm nights, whether you are enjoying the outdoors with family and friends, or just trying to sleep. To repel mosquitoes outdoors, get rid of all of the stagnant water as this is where they breed. You can also apply insect repellent, use specialty candles, and pretreat the garden with a backyard repellent. If nighttime mosquitoes are bothering you indoors, install fly screens to keep them at bay, and sleep under a mosquito net for extra protection. [Edit]Repelling Mosquitoes Outdoors - Remove all stagnant water from your garden. Check the whole garden for any puddles of water in toys, plates beneath flower pots, children's pools, and buckets. Remove all of these areas of stagnant water if possible to prevent attracting mosquitoes to your home.[1]
- Other areas that often have stagnant water in gardens are unused tyres, trash cans, and bird baths.[2]
- If your garden has areas of stagnant water that cannot be removed, such as a pond, simply stay away from these areas at night and keep any outdoor events as far away from the water as possible.
- Don't worry about your swimming pool attracting mosquitoes. Provided that the filter is working properly and that it's chlorinated, the mosquitoes won't be attracted to it.
- Apply insect repellent when you will be outdoors at night. Read the label on the insect repellent carefully, and reapply it as often as necessary. Put it on children over 2 months as well.[3]
- Insect repellents usually contain DEET, picaridin, lemon or eucalyptus oil, and all of these are effective against mosquitoes.
- Don't spray the insect repellent directly on your face, as it could irritate your eyes. Spray it onto your hands first, and then rub it on your face.[4]
- Cover your skin up as much as possible. Wear covered shoes and clothes that cover your arms and legs. Try to stick to light colors if possible, as mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors.[5]
- Lightweight clothes are the most practical due to the heat in summer.
- Avoid wearing any strong smelling body products. Many strong perfumes, colognes, and lotions can actually attract mosquitoes towards you. Save these products for when you are indoors, or for when the weather is cooler.[6]
- Floral scents tend to be especially attractive to mosquitoes.[7]
- Pretreat any outdoor areas that you plan on using with a backyard repellent. Connect the bottle of repellent to a hose, and spray the perimeter of your garden as instructed. This is usually done around 24 hours before you plan to use the area at night.[8]
- Read the label of the repellent carefully before you use it to check that the repellent is safe to use around children and pets.
- This will work to temporarily repel mosquitoes from the outdoor area.
- Place geraniol or citronella candles every in the outdoor area. Light the candles and strategically place them around the area that you will be using at night. Some candles can be hung, while others need to be placed on a surface.[9]
- Mosquitoes are repelled by geraniol and citronella, making this an effective, temporary solution for nighttime events.
[Edit]Warding off Mosquitoes Indoors - Install window screens on all of the windows in rooms where people sleep. You can purchase preassembled screens from home improvement stores, or you can make your own by creating a fitted frame and attaching the screen. You can install the window screens yourself by fitting them to the window, or you can hire a professional to do this for you.[10]
- Window screens let you keep the window open slightly during the warm summer months, but still keep out mosquitoes and other bugs. Placing window screens on bedroom windows is the most effective way to keep mosquitoes outside during summer.[11]
- Put door strips in place. Install a door strip on on the bottom of each door that has a large gap below it. These are installed by cutting the strip to fit the door, and attaching it with either adhesive or screws. Door strips are easy and inexpensive to place.[12]
- You can purchase door strips from home improvement stores.
- Door strips also have the added benefit of keeping the air in. This means that the temperature of the room is less likely to be influenced by the outdoor temperature.
- Sleep under a mosquito net. Hang a mosquito net above your bed so that your head and upper half of your body is protected. You can also purchase nets that are treated with insecticide for extra protection.[13]
- Make sure that there is a gap between the mosquito net and your skin; otherwise;the mosquitoes can land straight on the net and still bite you.
- Turn a fan on to move the air around. A ceiling or a bedside fan will both do the job of shifting the air around, which makes it difficult for the mosquitoes to fly. It will also help to keep you cool during warm summer nights.[14]
- Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, so a fan will also help to move the carbon dioxide that you exhale away from you.
- Use a smokeless mosquito coil. Plug in a mosquito vaporizer, and let it run for a couple of hours before you sleep. You can also use a timing device so that it switches off automatically.[15]
- This means that by the time you go to bed, any mosquitoes in the room will be dead.
- Plug-in mosquito vaporizers are a safe, indoor alternative to mosquito coils. There is no evidence of any health risks associated with using these.
[Edit]Warnings - Not all mosquito repellents that are advertised to be effective, actually are. Studies have proven that garlic, vitamin B, bananas, and dryer sheets are not effective solutions against mosquitoes.[16]
