Samsung has announced a new image sensor for smartphones that it claims has the "smallest pixel size in the industry." After introducing 0.8μm pixels on its 48- and now 64-megapixel sensors, which have seen widespread adoption from Chinese smartphone makers throughout 2019, Samsung is now producing the world's first image sensor with 0.7μm pixels.

The ISOCELL Slim GH1 is a 43.7-megapixel (7,968×5,480) sensor designed to offer high resolution in a small physical size. Samsung says it offers "the optimum solution for slim full-display devices," suggesting it's intended for selfie cameras; the company currently offers a 32-megapixel 0.8μm sensor that's often used that way.

A new Galaxy S10 software update is bringing headline features from the Note 10 to Samsung's other flagship phone line. SamMobile reports that the update is rolling out in certain regions right now for the Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, and S10E, and includes support for DeX PC connectivity, Live Focus blur effects in video recordings, and other camera features. It also includes this month's Android security patch

Samsung revamped its DeX concept with the Note 10, letting you access your phone's apps from any computer rather than requiring a separate monitor setup. Perhaps unsurprisingly, we found that it's still a pretty inelegant solution, as these things tend to be. But edge-case functionality stands a better chance of working for anyone when...

Facebook acquires neural interface startup CTRL-Labs for its mind-reading wristband

Facebook today announced that it will acquire neural interface startup CTRL-Labs, a company that makes a wristband capable of transmitting electrical signals from the brain into computer input.

The deal, which CNBC reports is worth around $1 billion, is the most substantial acquisition Facebook has made in the last half decade, since it paid $2 billion to acquire virtual reality company Oculus VR in 2014. It also marks a substantial increase in investment in Facebook's growing hardware ambitions, as the CTRL-Labs tech will be put to use in future augmented and virtual reality projects at the social network.

At UN Climate Summit, a lot of talk about action

World Leaders Gather For United Nations Climate Summit Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images

The United Nations Climate summit today was unforgettably disappointing to climate activists, who hoped that today might mark a new era in climate action.

"The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us I say we will never forgive you," teen climate activist Greta Thunberg told the UN delegates in an opening statement at the summit.

Researchers have said that to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the world needs to cut their greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, a goal that is far beyond most countries' current commitments. "There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures today," Thunberg said. "Because these numbers are too uncomfortable. And you are still not...

Google’s Pixelbook sequel reportedly has a 13-inch 4K display and a clamshell design

Google's big hardware event in October will likely focus a lot on the excessively leaked Pixel 4. But the company apparently has some other products to announce, too, including its newest Chromebook: a 13.3-inch, 4K new Pixelbook, according to 9to5Google.

The Chromebook, officially to be called the Pixelbook Go, is said to harken closer to Google's original Chromebook Pixel from 2013, with a simple clamshell design, as opposed to the transforming 2-in-1 design of the Pixelbook or the tablet-style Pixel Slate.

The Pixelbook Go has apparently been in development for a while, with Google confirming that it had future Chromebooks in the works back in April, along with FCC filings for the product hitting in...

The best thing I saw on Twitch today was Grand Theft Auto role-playing

When I tuned into the Grand Theft Auto V role-playing server earlier today, the first thing I saw was a hostage situation. Kyle Pred, a cadet in the Los Santos Police Department, was talking a gangster out of killing a random hostage in a bank. The gangster, Speedy, was yelling questions at Pred. "How many dots are there on two dice?" he asked through the locked door. "21 times two, so 42," Pred replied, correctly. The situation went on in this way for a minute, before Speedy tired of the game and brought the hostage out, along with his two men. The cops allowed them to get inside their vehicle; a merry chase ensued, ending a short while later as Speedy was able to get away on foot. (He immediately ambushed another gang with his...

Juul is under criminal investigation by federal prosecutors

In California, federal prosecutors have launched a criminal probe into Juul Labs, the immensely popular e-cigarette manufacturer, according to The Wall Street Journal. The focus of the probe is unclear, but the investigation is being led by the US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California, according to the Journal.

Juul has faced a number of legal challenges in recent months, as government outrage grows over hundreds of illnesses linked to e-cigarette use, including seven deaths.

A number of federal authorities are already investigating Juul. The Federal Trade Commission and a few state attorneys general are focusing on the company's marketing practices and whether they purposefully sought to target minors. The Food and...

Twitter just turned lists into multiple timelines you can swipe between

Posted: 23 Sep 2019 01:00 PM PDT

Twitter is now letting users add up to five lists as alternative timelines in the main Twitter app, allowing you to quickly swipe between different groups of accounts directly from your home screen.

The company tested the feature back in June, but it's rolling it out to everyone on iOS starting today. Check the tweet here for a better look at how the multiple lists actually work in practice.

The idea, though, is that you'll be able to use lists as either a filter for...

Amazon could unveil fitness-tracking earbuds and a larger Echo speaker this week

Amazon has a hardware event lined up for Wednesday, and if last year's showcase was any indication, we might see multiple new devices from the company. CNBC has just published a report saying that Amazon is working on wireless earbuds with health-tracking features and "a new, bulkier Echo device that comes with a woofer and better speakers than the original version."

The earbuds are expected to cost under $100, putting them at an advantageous price compared to Apple's AirPods and other true wireless earbuds like the Samsung Galaxy Buds, Jaybird Vistas, and the upcoming Jabra Elite 75ts. Amazon seems to be planning a health and fitness push for the earbuds, as CNBC says they'll be able to track running distance, burned calories, pace, and...

Fortnite is adding skill-based matchmaking and bots

Epic is making a big change to the way matchmaking works in Fortnite. With the game's next major update, v10.40, the developer will be introducing skill-based matchmaking to the battle royale. "Since battle royale launched, the matchmaking strategy for our core modes has remained mostly unchanged," Epic explained in a blog post published today. "Over the past two years, however, the range of player skill has grown considerably."

It's not clear exactly how this will work, but Epic says it is "introducing improved matchmaking logic to battle royale core modes to create fairer matches." According to the developer, this means that "you will be more likely to match with players of similar skill, and as you get better, so should your...
