Walmart sells ModCloth just two years after buying it Posted: 04 Oct 2019 06:26 PM PDT Walmart is selling off women's clothing company and online retailer ModCloth, just two years after acquiring it. The brand will now be a part of investment firm Go Global Retail, though it will continue to operate independently. "We expect they will continue in the same direction as before," Christian Feuer, managing director of Go Global Retail, told The Verge. "I don't think the customer will see a change. If they do, I hope they'll be happy with what they see." Susan Gregg Koger started ModCloth in 2002 as an independent, online fashion retailer. It was known for casting real people as models and being one of the first clothing... |
Google has suspended its controversial ‘field research’ that allegedly scanned homeless people Posted: 04 Oct 2019 06:02 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Less than two weeks ahead of the Pixel 4 flagship smartphone's debut, Google is reportedly pulling the plug on a controversial "field research" program that offered subjects in US cities a $5 gift certificate in exchange for a scan of their face — after a New York Daily News report that one Google contracting agency was actively targeting homeless people in Atlanta and tricking unwitting college students into participating. Originally, the company told us, the idea was to make sure the Pixel 4's new Face Unlock feature would recognize a diverse array of faces, which could keep it from being biased against people of color — a legitimate concern for facial recognition tech. According to The New York Times, Google claims it immediately... |
Federal judge says nobody cares about the iPhone’s notch Posted: 04 Oct 2019 05:08 PM PDT The iPhone's notch may not be the prettiest thing in the world, but there's now a lawsuit over it, which alleges that Apple's advertised screen size and resolution for the iPhone X, XS, and XS Max count pixels that aren't actually there due to the notch. A federal judge hearing the case, in an all-time great quote, thinks this may not be a big deal: "There doesn't really seem to be anyone in America who seems to be concerned about it," he said, according to Law360. Apple argues that it already explains how it measures screen size on its packaging, according to Law360, and has been trying to get the case dismissed since March. The plaintiffs are hoping to make it into a nationwide class-action lawsuit, but it hasn't been certified yet —... |
Don’t use THC vapes, FDA says, as lung injury death toll increases Posted: 04 Oct 2019 04:02 PM PDT Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Consumers should stay away from vapes that contain THC, the US Food and Drug Administration said today. People should also avoid all illicit vaporizers, regardless of whether they contain nicotine salts, tobacco, or THC. As of today, more than 1,000 cases of the vaping-related lung injuries have been identified by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, along with 18 deaths across 15 states. Almost three-quarters of patients have been men, and 80 percent of the patients have been under the age of 35. But the people who've died have ranged in age from the 20s to the 70s, and more women than men have died from the injuries. But because information has been so limited, the CDC hasn't been able to draw any definitive conclusions... |
Love it or hate it, the Joker movie presents a tempting fantasy Posted: 04 Oct 2019 03:43 PM PDT Photo: Niko Tavernise / Warner Bros. Todd Phillips' standalone supervillain origin story Joker is arriving in theaters amid so much controversy and concern about the potential for copycat violence that the debate has largely overwhelmed the film itself. It's been fascinating to watch the discussion around the movie shift from "Do we really need another Joker story so soon after Suicide Squad?" to "Is Joker full of dangerous ideas that will spur its worst fans to murder?" The initial worries around Joker assumed the movie would be unnecessary, its impact negligible. The current questions ascribe it with too much importance, as if it might incite full-blown anarchy just by existing. As usual in a case where people leap to extremes, the truth is somewhere in the middle. Joker m... |
Apple now has a free repair program if your iPhone 6S won’t turn on Posted: 04 Oct 2019 03:19 PM PDT Apple has admitted there's a component that can go bad in some iPhone 6S and 6S Plus handsets that can keep them from powering on — and it's now offering to replace that mystery component free of charge with a new repair program. The company's support page doesn't offer any details about which component caused the issue, but you can enter your phone's serial number there to see if it's eligible. Affected handsets are only those produced at the end of the phone's life, though — ones produced between October 2018 and August 2019, when both phones were discontinued. Apple wouldn't comment about which part might have been responsible. |
Bose discontinues Sleepbuds due to faulty battery, will offer full refund to all customers Posted: 04 Oct 2019 02:17 PM PDT Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge Bose is fully discontinuing its Sleepbuds, the $250 earbuds that were designed to be worn during sleep to help drown out disturbances and other unwanted noise. Returns of the product will be accepted until December 31st, and customers are being promised a full refund. Bose has posted a notice about the Sleepbuds on its website, where the company recounts their development, Indiegogo campaign, and commercial release. "We knew we were attempting to do something that had never been done before. But there was no doubt in our minds — it would be worth it. Because we wanted to help you," wrote Bose general manager John Roselli. "And for many of you, we have. You've told us that Sleepbuds have allowed you to get your first good night's rest in... |
Google finally gives Reader the respect it deserves with an actual gravestone Posted: 04 Oct 2019 01:51 PM PDT Image: @leftoblique Google Reader has been dead for over six years, and the internet hasn't been the same since. I still haven't found a replacement that I enjoy quite as much as my memories of Reader, and I mourn its death every day. But now, we may finally have a place where we can pay respects to the beloved RSS app. Dana Fried, a Google employee, posted this photo of a graveyard, with headstones for Reader and many other now-dead Google services, which is apparently set up in the main lobby of the company's Seattle campus in honor of spooky season:
There are also gravestones for Picasa, Google Buzz, Orkut, Google Wave, and... |
Apple CEO Tim Cook slams Facebook’s Libra cryptocurrency as a power grab Posted: 04 Oct 2019 01:43 PM PDT Photo by Drew Angerer / Getty Images Apple CEO Tim Cook had some choice words when asked about Facebook's controversial blockchain project Libra, with the chief executive openly characterizing the company's plans to launch a cryptocurrency as a blatant power grab. Speaking with the French newspaper Les Echos, Cook shot down any notion that Apple might be considering launching a digital currency of its own, given its recent investments in digital wallets, mobile payments, and consumer credit with the new Goldman Sachs-backed Apple Card. "No. I really think that a currency should stay in the hands of countries. I'm not comfortable with the idea of a private group setting up a competing currency," Cook told the publication in an interview published today. "A private company... |
Square Enix’s Avengers game looks like Destiny with superheroes Posted: 04 Oct 2019 01:30 PM PDT Square Enix's Avengers game has been years in the making — but so far, all it's had to show has been a canned demo of the game's tutorial that has left many more skeptical than impressed. But at New York Comic Con, Square Enix gave a fresh look at Avengers that proves there's more to it than just a very expensive tie-in to the popular Marvel films. First, the news. At its NYCC panel today, the company announced a sixth playable hero that will be available at launch: Ms. Marvel — aka Kamala Khan — who'll actually be the protagonist of Avengers, working to get the team back together to face a new threat. Marvel Games also announced a release date for the PSVR exclusive Iron Man VR, which will be out on February 28th next year. More... |
