Steam now lets you invite iOS and Android devices to join PC multiplayer games remotely Posted: 20 Nov 2019 05:37 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Last month, Valve announced a beta of Steam Remote Play Together, which let you play local multiplayer games over the internet with your friends across Windows, Linux, and macOS computers. Today, Remote Play Together is officially available for everyone, with a what could be a really cool new feature — you can play with your friends using iOS and Android devices as well. According to Valve, the host player just needs to install and start the game, and friends on PC can join in via Steam Remote Play or on mobile with the Steam Chat and Steam Link apps. Only the host needs to actually own the game, which is nice. We haven't been able to test Remote Play Together ourselves with iOS and Android clients yet, so we don't know if network... |
Trump is lying about the ‘new’ ‘Apple’ factory Posted: 20 Nov 2019 04:22 PM PST Photo by MANDEL NGAN/AFP via Getty Images In advance of Trump's factory tour today, I took a look at the strange relationship that's developed between Tim Cook and Donald Trump over the past three years. One of the things that popped up was one specific story that Trump would tell about Apple, in rally after rally and meeting after meeting. The idea was that Trump had somehow induced the company to build a new factory in the US, through some combination of tax cuts and trade policy, which was both very politically useful and also very much not true. Today, perhaps not surprisingly, he told the lie again. "We're seeing the beginning of a very powerful and important plant," Trump said at the factory. "Anybody that followed my campaign, I would always talk about Apple, that I want... |
Mercedes-Benz’s electric SUV will start at $67,900 Posted: 20 Nov 2019 04:21 PM PST Photo by Vlad Savov / The Verge Mercedes-Benz has finally announced a starting price for its first long-range electric vehicle, the EQC SUV: $67,900. The new SUV, which was announced more than a year ago, arrives in the United States in early 2020. That price, announced at the 2019 LA Auto Show, puts the base model EQC in a competitive spot as far as the cost of premium electric SUVs is concerned. The Jaguar I-Pace starts at $69,500, while the Audi E-Tron's price floor is $74,800. The Tesla Model X starts at $84,990. There are more affordable electric SUVs on the market, though they don't offer the same kind of luxury experience. Kia's Niro EV starts at $38,500, while sister company Hyundai's Kona EV starts at $36,950. The slightly-refreshed Chevy Bolt starts at... |
Facebook and Google surveillance is an ‘assault on privacy,’ says Amnesty International Posted: 20 Nov 2019 04:13 PM PST Illustration by James Bareham / The Verge Facebook and Google's persistent surveillance of billions of people around the world threatens human rights and free expression, says Amnesty International. In a new report, the NGO argues the companies need to change their business model and stop being reliant on people's data. The internet is a necessary part of daily life for people all over the world. The "Big Five" tech companies — Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Facebook — dominate almost all online services. Facebook and Google are particularly powerful when it comes to speech and free expression — two fundamental rights that Amnesty International says are under assault. |
Google issues harsh new restrictions on political ad targeting Posted: 20 Nov 2019 03:34 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge On Wednesday, Google announced that it would start limiting the abilities of political advertisers to target their messaging in the coming months. In a blog post, Google's vice president of product management and advertising Scott Spencer, said that the company would begin to ban political advertisers from targeting consumers based on their political affiliation or public voter records. Advertisers will still be able to target voters based on age, gender and zip code, but no more specific location targeting will be permitted. Contextual advertising, like "serving ads to people reading or watching a story about, say, the economy," Google said, will also be permitted. These changes will roll out in the United Kingdom ahead of its general... |
Uber will start audio-recording rides as a safety measure Posted: 20 Nov 2019 03:28 PM PST Uber will launch a feature to audio-record rides in the United States as a way to ensure passenger and driver safety, according to company communications accessed by The Washington Post and confirmed by Uber itself. The company says it plans to test the feature in Mexico and Brazil next month before deciding when to bring it to the US. Drivers can set up the feature to automatically record all rides, while passengers will have to activate the feature through the app's Safety Toolkit before getting into a car; it's not clear whether they'll have to enable the feature before each and every ride. Either way, riders and passengers won't be notified when recording starts — Uber says they'll get a general warning when the feature becomes... |
PayPal acquires the company behind the Honey deal-finding extension for $4 billion Posted: 20 Nov 2019 03:02 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Today, PayPal announced that it has acquired Honey Science Corporation, the company that makes the popular Honey deal-finding Chrome extension, for "approximately $4 billion." TechCrunch reports that the deal is mostly cash. When you're shopping on one of the 30,000 online retailers Honey works with, the extension will find coupon codes for things you add to your cart and attempt to automatically apply them for you. In my experience, though, the codes Honey finds don't always work — Best Buy's online store didn't take a Honey-found coupon for an order I created for a Nintendo Switch, for example — but it's a useful service to at least help you check for coupon codes before you buy something. Honey can also track prices of an individual... |
SpaceX’s prototype Starship rocket partially bursts during testing in Texas Posted: 20 Nov 2019 02:35 PM PST A screengrab of the mishap, from LabPadre's live stream. | Image: LabPadre A test version of SpaceX's next-generation rocket, Starship, partially burst apart during ground tests in Texas today, erupting plumes of gas and sending some pieces of hardware soaring into the sky. Live streams set up by local space enthusiasts captured the failure in real time this afternoon. The explosive result occurred while SpaceX was seemingly conducting some pressure tests with the vehicle at the company's test site in Boca Chica, Texas. The local live streams showed the vehicle venting gas periodically throughout the day, indicating that testing was underway. "The purpose of today's test was to pressurize systems to the max, so the outcome was not completely unexpected," a spokesperson for SpaceX told The Verge. "There were no... |
You might be able to schedule tweets from Twitter’s web app starting today Posted: 20 Nov 2019 01:35 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Today, Twitter announced that it's rolling out an "experiment" of a new tweet scheduling feature that you can use right from Twitter's web app (via 9to5Mac). The new feature could be handy to prep tweets for a coordinated product launch or news announcement, for example. But until today, it wasn't something you could do on Twitter's web app — you would have had to use TweetDeck or a third-party service like Buffer. If you're part of the experiment, you'll be able to schedule a tweet right from the compose window. Here's what the process looks like — it seems pretty straightforward:

PopSockets made an AirPods grip, and it is godawful Posted: 20 Nov 2019 12:27 PM PST There are some objects that spit in the face of god, either in their design or their intended use, and another such product has just entered our reality. PopSocket — the makers of the now-ubiquitous, carpal tunnel-saving doohickeys that adorn the backs of many smartphones — has now made a PopGrip (its term) that is an AirPods case. It looks like a tumorous growth out of the back of your phone, but hey, you probably won't lose your AirPods again — only your dignity. Like the other PopGrips, the PopGrip AirPods Holder can be swapped out for other grips. It's detachable, and it works with wireless charging. It comes in a variety of colors. It retails for $20, and you can buy it directly from PopGrip online. The only question to ask... |
