Your Amazon Echo or Google Home could be fooled by a laser ‘speaking’ words Posted: 04 Nov 2019 05:55 PM PST As handy as smart speakers can be, the fact they're always listening can make them a little creepy — remember how smart speaker makers were caught using humans to listen to voice recordings? Now, researchers have demonstrated a potential new security risk: it's possible to issue commands to smart speakers with lasers instead of spoken words, as Wired reports. The researchers found that by changing a laser's intensity to a specific frequency and pointing the laser directly at a smart speaker's microphone, they could make the microphone interpret the laser as if it were sound, letting them issue a command to the voice assistant powering the device. And it seems like practically every voice assistant may be vulnerable to this vector of... |
Airbnb bans ‘party houses’ following Orinda shooting Posted: 04 Nov 2019 03:56 PM PST On Saturday, Airbnb CEO and cofounder Brian Chesky tweeted that the company would be banning "party houses" after five people died in a shooting during a 100-plus person Halloween party at an Airbnb rental in Orinda, California. Chesky outlines the steps Airbnb is taking in the same Twitter thread, including creating a rapid response team for "party houses", presumably to help homeowners prevent dangerous parties. Chesky did not explain what a "party house" is in the thread. Airbnb spokesperson Ben Breit defined "party houses" as rentals which repeatedly disturb neighbors, according to The Washington Post, but said that any specific standards have yet to be determined. Airbnb claims it already uses an automated risk detection system that... |
TikTok’s global social media takeover is starting to slow down Posted: 04 Nov 2019 03:37 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge TikTok, the explosively popular Chinese social media platform, may be approaching the upper limits of its global popularity. The platform launched in 2016 as a lip-syncing app called Musical.ly before being acquired by ByteDance, now the world's most valuable startup. Following an international launch in 2017 and an official rebranding, TikTok has since expanded into a unique hybrid somewhere between Vine and YouTube that's captured the cultural zeitgeist among teenage smartphone owners in unprecedented fashion. In the two and a half years since it launched outside China, TikTok has seen astounding growth, adding more than 500 million users so far this year and closing in on 1.5 billion users in total. But according to new data from... |
The best thing I saw on Twitch today was 88bitmusic’s donation alert set to Toto’s “Africa” Posted: 04 Nov 2019 03:15 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Twitch is so many things to so many people: like all of the other social platforms, it's a place where people who are mostly too online get creative. And that gets doubly interesting because all of the content is streamed live. Today, I came across an incredible clip from 88bitmusic — otherwise known as the musician Trevor Gomes — which was a full music video to Toto's 1981 megahit "Africa" triggered by a donation of $45.67. (Yes, 4-5-6-7.) Take a look.

The 11-inch iPad Pro is down to $649, matching the lowest price we’ve seen Posted: 04 Nov 2019 01:40 PM PST Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge As a friend, I should tell you that you should think twice before spending big bucks on tech only a few weeks before Black Friday. But I also want to tell you that the 11-inch iPad Pro (64GB, Wi-Fi), which currently costs $799 through Apple, is $649.99 at Amazon, which matches the best price that we've seen yet. Price drops on Apple's flagship tablet have slowed in recent months, likely due to other new iPad models — like the iPad Air, iPad mini, and the seventh-generation iPad — stealing a bit of the spotlight. Whatever the actual reason, this is as good of a deal as we've seen. According to data from CamelCamelCamel, it's the first time since early August that this model was listed for this price. Typically at this time of the year,... |

Uber’s latest earnings report is less catastrophic than last quarter Posted: 04 Nov 2019 01:24 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Uber reported its third quarter earnings on Monday, in which it posted a net loss of $1.2 billion. It was not quite as stunning as the previous quarter, which saw Uber lose a jaw-dropping $5.2 billion in just four months. Most of that amount, around $3.9 billion, was attributable to stock-based compensation related to the company's initial public offering. Today's report beat Wall Street's expectations, which assumed the company would lose $1.5 billion. Uber said it brought in $3.8 billion in revenue over the four-month period ending in September. Gross bookings, or total customer payments to Uber before payments to drivers and other fees or discounts, grew to $16.5 billion, representing 29 percent year-over-year growth. Uber has been... |
The Pixel 4’s Smooth Display issues will be ‘improved’ with the November update Posted: 04 Nov 2019 01:09 PM PST Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verg The November 2019 update for Google's Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL might smooth out one the biggest wrinkles from its launch a few weeks ago. Per 9to5Google, the release notes for the new update listed on Google's Pixel Update Bulletin mentions that improvements have been made to the Smooth Display feature. While it doesn't go into detail as to what has changed, presumably (and hopefully), it has implemented some changes to prevent the Pixel 4 from automatically dipping below a 90Hz refresh rate, or at least it has limited the conditions in which that happens. When this issue surfaced, Google provided a statement to The Verge in which it said that it will override the Smooth Display setting to adjust refresh rate under certain circumstances,... |
Twitch’s top streamer exodus continues as CouRage announces YouTube Live deal Posted: 04 Nov 2019 12:11 PM PST Photo: Matt Shouse / YouTube Twitch is losing another major streamer: Jack "CouRage" Dunlop — one of the most popular Fortnite streamers on the site with over 2 million followers — has announced he'll now exclusively stream on YouTube Live. Dunlop's first YouTube stream will start tomorrow on November 5th. As has become the tradition with big streaming platform changes, Dunlop announced the move in an elaborate video featuring fellow 100 Thieves members Matt "Nadeshot" Haag and Rachel "Valkyrae" Hofstetter that also makes it clear that Dunlop will still be saying with the e-sports organization.
