Huawei P40 Pro leak shows off five-camera bump and ceramic body

Posted: 16 Jan 2020 06:18 PM PST

New renders from Evan "Evleaks" Blass give us what may well be our best look yet at Huawei's next flagship phone. This is the P40 Pro, according to Blass, who says that the phone will make use of ceramic in its build. As with a previous leak, it looks like the front glass and back panel will curve on all four edges.

The most prominent design feature revealed in the images is the colossal camera bump that houses five lenses, one of which is a periscope-style telephoto camera. The Leica branding and technical details describe the array as covering 18-240mm equivalence, which between the ultrawide and telephoto should amount to more than 13x zoom reach. It's likely, though, that Huawei is relying on software enhancements to arrive at that...

This clever R/C car leans and drifts like it weighs tons, not pounds

Posted: 16 Jan 2020 05:04 PM PST

A handy Redditor has made a really cool Arduino-powered toy R/C car that can dip, move, and drift almost exactly like a real car. (And it's decked out with an awesome-looking 1963 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Wagon shell, to boot.)

Seriously, watch this thing take a few turns. I've never seen an R/C car move like this — it realistically leans into turns and drifts, almost like a stunt car driven in a movie. Most R/C cars don't move with quite the same illusion of weight.

This next GIF is pretty cool, too, showing how the car can bounce side to side and "fire" up its exhaust pipes as if it was revving up. It also gives you a brief look of what's under the hood, so to speak:

The maker of the car, Dimitar Tilev,...

Here’s the zany internal Apple music video you’ve probably never seen

Posted: 16 Jan 2020 04:10 PM PST

This morning, we introduced you to The Apple Archive, an unofficial collection of the Cupertino company's official videos, print ads, marketing images, and even some eye-opening internal training videos — check out young Woz and his single earring at the beginning of this early video on the value of patents!

But at the time, we were blissfully unaware that the archive also included this delightful monstrosity: a four-minute music video masquerading as an "Easy Pay training video."

We will now inflict it upon you:

It just keeps on going, doesn't it?

I can guess what you're thinking, but no, these employees were not fired — in fact, a LinkedIn profile suggests lead singer Brian Maslow spent five more years at the company and got...

Taika Waititi, the director behind Oscar nominated film Jojo Rabbit and Marvel hit Thor: Ragnarok, is in talks with Disney and Lucasfilm about overseeing a future Star Wars movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The talks are far from final it seems, and it's not clear how any project Waititi may work on would fit into the larger scheme of Star Wars' expanding TV and film universe. But Waititi, having helmed a hugely successful Marvel film and coming off fresh from directing the well-received finale of Disney+ hit The Mandalorian, is certainly a strong contender to carry the Star Wars flame forward.

Disney and Lucasfilm are also in need of some new, high-profile talent after Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss...

Here’s what NBC’s Peacock streaming service will look like when it launches this July

Posted: 16 Jan 2020 02:43 PM PST

Much like competitors HBO Max and Disney+, Comcast's streaming service, Peacock, is going to be entirely reliant on hubs.

Comcast and NBCUniversal gave an in-depth look at Peacock, which launches on July 15th and will come with three different pricing tiers, during a special investors event this afternoon at 30 Rock in New York City. There are more than 600 engineers working on the platform, according to Matt Strauss, head of Peacock. The streaming platform is based on the infrastructure that Sky in the UK has used for its own streaming options.

During the presentation, Strauss walked investors and viewers through the Peacock interface. There are three different areas that subscribers can use when they open the app: channels, trending,...

Google's parent company Alphabet ($GOOG) is now the fourth US company to hit a market cap of $1 trillion. It hit the number just before markets closed on Thursday, ending the day's trading at $1,451.70 per share, up 0.87 percent.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai took over as CEO of Alphabet in December, after Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin relinquished control of Alphabet. It's been a bumpy couple of years at the company that included allegations of sexual misconduct by executives and a 20,000-person Google Walkout employee protest.

Alphabet is slated to report fourth-quarter earnings on February 3rd, and Wall Street analysts are expecting it to report revenue of $46.9 billion, a year-over-year uptick of almost 20 percent.

Facebook backs off plan to plaster ads all over WhatsApp

Facebook is "backing away" from earlier plans to sell ads for placement inside its enormously popular WhatsApp messaging service. According to The Wall Street Journal, the team that had been working on building ads into WhatsApp was disbanded in recent months, with their work subsequently "deleted from WhatsApp's code."

The Journal notes that Facebook still ultimately aims to integrate ads into WhatsApp's Status feature, but for now, the app will remain ad-free. The company's desire to monetize WhatsApp, which it acquired for $22 billion in 2014, is part of what drove WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum out of Facebook in 2018. His fellow co-founder Brian Acton left months earlier (over similar clashes related to privacy and targeted...

Bernie Sanders thanks popular Facebook teen meme group for endorsement

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) Holds Up Trade Bill Passage Photo by Mark Wilson/Getty Images

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is a friend to public transportation. His Green New Deal plan calls for a big boost in transit spending, a network of high-speed rail, and the phasing out of internal combustion engine vehicles. He is also quite popular with young voters. According to a recent poll, 51 percent of voters aged 18–34 chose Sanders as their top Democratic candidate.

So it should come as little surprise that a very popular transit-themed meme group on Facebook called the New Urbanist Memes for Transit-Oriented Teens — aka NUMTOT— recently endorsed Sanders for president. What is surprising is the fact that Sanders actually responded to the endorsement.

"Thank you NUMTOT for your...

The Banker — the first film from Apple TV Plus planned to make a major theatrical release — will be hitting theaters on March 6th, after an initial delay while Apple investigated sexual misconduct allegations surrounding Bernard Garrett Jr., the movie's producer. Garrett is also the real-life son of The Banker protagonist Bernard Garrett Sr. (played by Anthony Mackie), via Variety.

In a statement, an Apple spokesperson commented to Variety that "We created Apple TV Plus as a home for stories that matter and believe 'The Banker,' inspired by the brave actions of Bernard Garrett Sr. and Joe Morris, two African American businessmen who brought about positive social change, is one of those stories."

Comcast's NBCUniversal is preparing to go head-to-head with WarnerMedia, Disney, and Netflix with the launch of its Peacock streaming service, lining up several big-time showrunners for a slate of new shows. The streaming service is set to launch on July 15th, and will come with three different pricing tiers, including a free option.

There is a mix of dramas and comedies within the announcements, including projects from iconic writers like Norman Lear, Mindy Kaling, and Amy Poehler. Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels is teaming back up with former cast member and actor Will Forte for a MacGruber series based on Forte's popular character, which also received its own standalone film. Two series, in particular, stand out: a drama...
