SpaceX launches latest batch of 60 internet-beaming satellites for Starlink constellation Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:20 PM PST Update January 6th, 10:20PM ET: SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket took off at 9:19PM ET from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and deployed the 60 satellites about an hour after launch. The rocket also landed on the company's drone ship shortly after launch, marking the fourth time this particular rocket has gone to space and back. Original Story: Tonight, SpaceX is set to launch its third batch of 60 Starlink satellites into orbit, part of the company's ongoing initiative to create a mega-constellation of spacecraft that will beam internet connectivity to the Earth below. SpaceX will have 180 spacecraft in orbit following a successful launch, bringing the company even closer to having the most satellites around Earth at once. One of the... |
Samsung plans to launch its Galaxy Home Mini smart speaker early this year Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:16 PM PST Image: Samsung Samsung's Galaxy Home Mini may finally see the light of day, with Samsung CEO and head of its consumer electronics division Hyun-Suk Kim announcing at CES 2020 that the company would be releasing its smaller Bixby-powered smart speaker early this year, via Bloomberg. It's been over a year and a half since Samsung first showed off its Bixby-powered Galaxy Home smart speaker, which was announced back in August 2018. The full-sized smart speaker has since missed numerous delays, most recently at the end of Q3 2019. In that time, though, the company also quietly announced the Galaxy Home Mini through a public beta test in South Korea, and it's that device that's reportedly nearing a release date. |
Samsung’s new Ballie robot is like a real-life mini BB-8 Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:02 PM PST Today, at Samsung's keynote at CES, Samsung introduced Ballie, a small ball-shaped robot intended to help you around the house. Samsung says Ballie utilizes AI to be a security robot, a fitness assistant, and it's "even a new mobile interface."
In an onstage demo, Ballie followed Samsung's H.S. Kim around on stage by rolling around, seemingly by using the camera to track Kim as he walked across the stage. Ballie also gave cute little robotic chimes in response... |
Belkin partners with Devialet for a Google Assistant smart speaker that’s also a wireless charger Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:00 PM PST Image: Belkin Belkin is a company known for its wireless chargers. Devialet is known for its high-end, ultra loud speakers. And at CES 2020, the two companies announced that they'll be partnering on a new product, the $299 Soundform Elite Hi-Fi Smart Speaker + Wireless Charger, which combines a Google Assistant-powered smart speaker with a wireless charging pad. The Soundform Elite isn't the first Devialet partnership on a smart speaker — Huawei announced its Xiaoyi voice assistant-powered Sound X speaker last year, which also relies on technology from the French speaker company. But Belkin's speaker (unlike Huawei's) will be available outside of China, marking the first widely available smart speaker based on Devialet's hardware. |
Linksys combines 5G and fast Wi-Fi 6 networking in new gear Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:00 PM PST Linksys 5G Velop Mesh Gateway. | Image: Linksys Linksys just announced an entire lineup of 5G networking gear that will begin shipping between this spring and the end of 2020. Unfortunately, details are as sparse as 5G network coverage. Kicking things off is the Linksys Velop 5G Mesh Gateway, a two-in-one modem and router solution that marries 5G and Wi-Fi 6. You can use this to bring a 5G signal into your home and extend it to every room via the mesh system. It's also compatible with existing Linksys Velop systems, so you should be able to slot it into an existing Linksys mesh setup. Linksys is also announcing a 5G Mobile Hotspot with Wi-Fi 6 support for on-the-go connectivity, a 5G modem for use within the home, and a mmWave 5G outdoor router that can be wired into a 10 Gbps home... |
Wemo’s new WiFi Smart Plug gets an even tinier redesign Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:00 PM PST Wemo WiFi Smart Plug | Image: Wemo Wemo has a new smart plug out at CES 2020, the (aptly named) WiFi Smart Plug, which replaces the existing Wemo Mini plug with an even tinier design. The company also announced the Wemo Stage, a scene-controlling switch / remote that's designed to easily switch between smart home presets. The WiFi Smart Plug should look fairly familiar to anyone who's bought into Wemo's smart home equipment — it's effectively identical to the Wemo Mini, just smaller. Like its predecessor, it supports Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit, as well as the Wemo app for controlling whatever you plug into it (like a lamp, fan, air conditioner, etc.). The old Wemo Mini was already fairly small, but if you're someone who had concerns about blocking... |
China’s NIU starts selling its electric mopeds in the US Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:00 PM PST Image: NIU Chinese startup NIU is bringing its Vespa-style electric mopeds in the United States. The company says it made its slick and somewhat affordable electric two-wheelers available for purchase in San Francisco, San Diego, Austin, Chicago, Washington, DC, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Honolulu, and it's spinning up sales operations in some of those cities right now. NIU (not to be confused with electric vehicle startup NIO) is perhaps best known Stateside, if it's known at all, because it supplies the vehicles for the shared moped service Revel. Revel launched last year in New York City with 1,000 of NIU's mopeds, and it has since expanded to some of the cities NIU is now targeting, including Washington, DC, Austin, and most recently, Miami.... |
MSI’s new gaming laptops have speedy 300Hz displays and massive 99.9Wh batteries Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:55 PM PST Image: MSI At CES 2020, PC gaming hardware maker MSI announced two new gaming laptops with super-speedy 300Hz refresh rate screens and massive batteries to help power them. One of the laptops, the new MSI GS66 Stealth, has a nice, relatively unassuming-looking black chassis: The new GE66 Raider, on the other hand, has a more pronounced design, more ports (including an SD card reader), and "panoramic aurora lighting," which looks to mean that the laptop will be able to cast light from its bottom edge: Both can be upgraded to 300Hz displays, but even more impressive is that each comes with a huge 99.9Wh battery. If you opt for the 300Hz display, you'll likely burn through that big... |
Watch Sony unveil its Vision-S concept car and reveal the new PS5 logo Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:42 PM PST Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Sony's CES 2020 press conference was a brief one, but it did have some interesting news. The company revealed the PlayStation 5 (aka the PS5) logo for the first time, although we didn't get to see what the next-gen game console will look like quite yet. The company also shared some new sales milestones for its existing PS4 platform and its PSVR virtual reality headset. Sony also revealed a first for the Japanese consumer electronics giant: an electric car called the Vision-S. While it's technically a concept car — it doesn't sound as if Sony has any intention of mass-producing the vehicle — it does show off Sony's penchant for intriguing, futuristic industrial design. The automobile has 33 sensors for monitoring both the inside and... |
Bluetooth will support hearing aids, sharing, and a better audio codec Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:00 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Now that most smartphones don't have headphone jacks, there's no shortage of complaints about Bluetooth. This year at CES, the industry group in charge of defining the standard, the Bluetooth SIG, is introducing new features that should address some of them. Later this year, it will finalize new support for Bluetooth LE Audio, which is an umbrella term for a bunch of new features for Bluetooth devices. The new features include higher-quality audio, hearing aid support, broadcasting to many people, and working better with wireless earbuds. Unfortunately, as is the way with all industry specs, it will take some time for these features to make their way into consumer products. The old joke that "Bluetooth will be better next year" still... |
