Android phones will get the COVID-19 tracking updates via Google Play Posted: 13 Apr 2020 05:11 PM PDT Google has confirmed that it will use the Google Play Services infrastructure to update Android phones with the upcoming COVID-19 contact tracing system it is building in collaboration with Apple. It should ensure that more Android phones will actually get the updates, and also ensure that they become available on phones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or above. Until today, it was an open question, but one that was vital for Google to answer. That's because Google Play is the only reliable system that exists for getting software updates pushed out to Android phones in a timely manner. The other way — full operating system updates — is often fraught with delays from both carriers and manufacturers. Google says that its update system...
Reddit will now publicly track political ad spending on its platform Posted: 13 Apr 2020 04:56 PM PDT Reddit is launching a new subreddit that will list all political ad campaigns that have run on the site since January 1st, 2019, the company announced today. The new subreddit can be found at r/RedditPoliticalAds. "In this community, you will find information on the individual advertiser, their targeting, impressions, and spend on a per-campaign basis," Reddit said in its announcement post. "We plan to consistently update this subreddit as new political ads run on Reddit, so we can provide transparency into our political advertisers and the conversation their ad(s) inspires." Reddit is also updating its policies for political advertising to require political campaigns...
Zoom will let paying customers pick which data center their calls are routed from Posted: 13 Apr 2020 03:42 PM PDT Zoom will let paying customers pick which data centers calls can be routed through starting April 18th, the company announced in a blog post today. The changes come after a report from the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab found that Zoom generated encryption keys for some calls from servers in China, even if none of the people on the call were physically located in the country. Zoom says paying customers will be able to "opt in or out of a specific data center region," though you won't be able to opt out of your default region. Zoom currently groups its data centers into these regions: Australia, Canada, China, Europe, India, Japan/Hong Kong, Latin America, and the US.
Get lost in the sounds of YouTube’s growing ambient modular synth community Posted: 13 Apr 2020 03:06 PM PDT In recent weeks, ambient modular synth videos have started popping up more frequently on YouTube. The videos center on the gear, with hands coming in and out of frame to slowly adjust a knob or push a fader. Amid the hypnotic sounds, there's oodles of multi-colored cables, glowing lights, and more often than not, a bit of decor. One is shot in a suitcase with a steaming cup of tea nearby. Another is surrounded by succulents. And they're all quite relaxing to watch. With everyone stuck at home, it's logical that Eurorack lovers would spend more time noodling around with their gear. For those not acquainted, Eurorack is a modular synthesizer format based upon individual modules that serve specific purposes or make particular sounds. When...
NASCAR driver suspended after using racial slur during sim race Posted: 13 Apr 2020 03:05 PM PDT NASCAR driver Kyle Larson has been indefinitely suspended by the series after he said the n-word during a sim racing stream over the weekend. It's the latest example of how the pandemic-inspired shift to online racing is still resulting in real-world consequences for some drivers. Just last week, NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace lost a sponsor after he quit a sim race following a virtual crash. Larson was driving in a special event held Sunday in iRacing, a leading sim racing platform that has become one of the de facto places for drivers to compete in the absence of real-world events. He said the n-word on a public drivers' channel while apparently trying to privately communicate with a friend. Larson apologized in a video message on...
Apple responds to senators’ privacy fears over COVID-19 screening tools Posted: 13 Apr 2020 02:54 PM PDT Apple has responded to a Senate letter asking questions about its COVID-19 screening tools. The company sought to allay concerns around an app and website that it launched in late March, built in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the White House. It promises that the tools include "strong privacy and security protections" and that Apple will "never" sell the data it collects. The letter answers several questions posed by Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Cory Booker (D-NJ). Among other things, it reveals the terms of Apple's agreement with the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). These...
Razer’s Pikachu earbuds come in a pokéball case for all your charging needs Posted: 13 Apr 2020 01:12 PM PDT Razer is selling wireless earbuds perfect for Pokémon fans. In addition to Pikachu-stamped yellow buds, the set comes with a charging case shaped like a pokéball. They'll be launching in China for roughly $120 on April 16th. Razer's earbuds, spotted by Gizmodo, will last for about three hours per charge. That's not very good battery life, but at least the case offers up to five recharges. The earbuds are outfitted with a 13mm driver for your bass needs. While they may not be the most powerful earbuds you can buy, they do offer more flair than the typical pair. Honestly? The carrying case is the real selling point here. Who doesn't want to carry around a cute little pokéball in their bag? Don't answer that.
Netflix signs a first-look deal with Boom Studios for new comic book TV show adapations Posted: 13 Apr 2020 12:50 PM PDT Netflix has announced a first-look deal with comics publisher Boom Studios for new TV series based on Boom's comic book franchises, giving the streaming service another avenue for intellectual property based on which it can create new shows. While not nearly as large as big-name publishers like Marvel, DC, or Image Comics, Boom Studios is still one of the most popular comic book companies in the world, producing major franchises like Lumberjanes, Something is Killing the Children, Once & Future, Mouse Guard, and Coda. With the new deal, Netflix gets access to a wealth of franchises and series from Boom's original lineups to turn into new TV shows, something that Netflix badly needs in the increasingly tribalistic streaming wars. With...
Why we’re still relying on a century-old strategy to treat COVID-19 Posted: 13 Apr 2020 12:15 PM PDT COVID-19 research is advancing at an unprecedented speed, but one strategy doctors are leaning on to treat COVID-19 patients looks more antiquated than innovative. In hospitals around the United States, caregivers are resorting to using century-old convalescent plasma therapy — siphoning blood from survivors and reinfusing it into the sick. That's because the hundreds of research papers published in the past few months and the record-setting leaps in vaccine development haven't been fast enough to keep up with the blistering speed of the ongoing pandemic. People are sick and dying now, which is why doctors are falling back on plasma therapy as one stopgap measure that they hope can help in the lag time before other treatments come...
