Riot will make it easier to gain access to the closed beta of its popular new tactical shooter Valorant, the game developer announced late Tuesday. Now, not just select Twitch streamers, but all Twitch streamers who have access to the game can now drop the coveted beta access keys, so long as those streamers playing are actively live streaming the game and turn on the in-game drops feature.

This should make it much easier for eager Valorant fans to gain access to the game by watching different streamers and not just the select few Riot has given early access to and partnered with for the key distribution. To do good by the game's fast-growing community, Riot says it's also gone through thousands of the most dedicated Twitch users who've...

Google may start adjusting the quality of video captured by your Nest security camera to help ease the strain put on broadband networks. The company is making the changes at a time when more people than ever are using internet-connected devices at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"To answer the global call to prioritize internet bandwidth for learning and working, in the next few days we're going to be making a few changes," Google said in a statement to The Verge. "We believe these changes have the potential to help make it easier for communities to keep up with school, work, and everything in between." Nest users on Twitter first reported receiving an email from Google announcing the changes.

Amazon is planning to make dramatic cuts to commission rates for its affiliate marketing program, which allows media organizations, e-commerce companies, and small and independent businesses to receive a cut of revenue from a sale if a customer lands on the product page and purchases the item through a provided link. The cuts go into effect on April 21st, according to CNBC, and some product categories will see drops of more than 50 percent.

For instance, commission rates under the categories home improvement, furniture, lawn and garden, and pet products will see a commission rate of 8 percent per sale drop down to just 3 percent. For headphones, beauty products, and musical instruments, commission rates will go from 6 percent down to 3...

Wear OS, Google's operating system for smartwatches and wearables, now sends periodic reminders to wash your hands, one of the best ways to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

First spotted by Android Police, this new feature appears to be part of the v5.4.0 update for the Google Clock app. The new feature is added into the Clock application and will send alerts every three hours to head to a sink and scrub your hands; once you are ready, you can start a 40-second countdown. Though, if this alert is intrusive to you, Android Police notes that you can disable the feature.

The novel coronavirus has been wreaking havoc for several months now across the globe. One of the most effective ways to protect yourself against the...

Disney Plus’ butt cover-up hides a much bigger problem

Posted: 14 Apr 2020 02:34 PM PDT

There's a scene in Touchstone Pictures' 1984 movie Splash where a young Tom Hanks watches a beautiful naked mermaid run off into the ocean from which she came. In the original version, the camera follows Hanks' gaze, showing a brief glimpse of a naked butt. Splash received a PG rating because of the shot (and the insinuation that came with it), but people watching the movie on Disney Plus are greeted with an entirely different version of the scene.

In the re-edited version, which went viral, thanks to the tweet below, Disney used CGI hair to cover actress Daryl Hannah's body. A Disney representative confirmed to The Verge that a "few scenes" from Splash were "slighted edited to remove nudity," but they did not specify when the edits...

The Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are cheaper than ever at multiple retailers

Google has given its Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL unlocked phones a big price cut that lasts until May 9th at 11:59PM PT, or until supplies last. Each size and storage configuration is $300 off at the Google Store, Best Buy, and Amazon. Considering that the smaller Pixel 4 usually sells for $799, having it down to $499 for the 64GB version makes taking the plunge a much more reasonable idea if you're in the market for an upgrade, but don't want to spend hundreds more on the Samsung Galaxy S20 or even the new OnePlus 8.

Both sizes of the Pixel 4 work with any US carrier, and because it's unlocked at purchase, you can swap any SIM in. If you use Google Fi, you can take advantage of the phone's eSIM capability. These devices released in late 2019...

The passionate customers who helped lift up electric skateboard company Boosted are now rallying to help each other in the wake of the startup's collapse.

After the company announced it was laying off almost all of its employees and looking for a buyer in March, customers and fans quickly flocked to r/boostedboards and started to organize.

Current (and even some prospective) customers of Boosted's electric skateboards and e-scooters have deluged the subreddit with tips and tricks on the best ways to fix and maintain the products. One user started a shared Google Drive to host owners' manuals and other reference materials, and is even considering opening up a service center. Another has started a new potential business, offering to do...

Photographer can’t sue a website for embedding her Instagram post, says court

Posted: 14 Apr 2020 12:59 PM PDT

A court ruled yesterday that Mashable can embed a professional photographer's photo without breaking copyright law, thanks to Instagram's terms of service. The New York district court determined that Stephanie Sinclair offered a "valid sublicense" to use the photograph when she posted it publicly on Instagram.

The case stems from a 2016 Mashable post on female photographers, which included Sinclair and embedded an image from her Instagram feed. Mashable had previously failed to license the image directly, and Sinclair sued parent company Ziff Davis for using Instagram embedding as a workaround.

But Judge Kimba Wood noted that Instagram reserves a "fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable" right to photos on its service....

Google is reportedly building its own processor for Pixels and Chromebooks

Google may be developing its own processor that could power the company's Pixel phones as early as next year, while later versions of the processor could be used in Google's Chromebooks, according to a report by Axios. Apple has long used its own processors in many of its devices, and it seems Google could be looking to do something similar for its own hardware.

The chip, apparently codenamed "Whitechapel," may be an eight-core ARM processor built using Samsung's 5-nanometer process, according to Axios. The processor could be optimized to run Google's machine learning technology and may have a portion of the chip designated to improve Google Assistant's performance, according the report.
