Roku’s free ad-supported streaming service is coming to the UK Posted: 06 Apr 2020 04:01 PM PDT Roku is bringing its free, ad-supported Roku Channel to the UK. The service, which is available starting today, will give access to over 10,000 on-demand movies, TV episodes, and documentaries, including Fifth Gear, Skins, Get Carter, and The Wicker Man. You'll be able to access the Roku Channel on Roku devices, Now TV sticks, and Sky Q set-top boxes, and streaming quality goes up to 1080p, depending on the content and exact hardware you're using. All of this content is available for free, but there will be ads interspersed throughout the course of whatever you're watching. Roku says that it'll try to show viewers a similar amount of ads to what they'd see on other platforms, and in the case of TV shows, it'll attempt to place ads during... |
Boeing will refly its passenger spacecraft for NASA without crew after flubbed debut launch Posted: 06 Apr 2020 03:58 PM PDT An artistic rendering of Boeing's Starliner vehicle. | Image: Boeing Boeing has decided to refly its new passenger spacecraft, the CST-100 Starliner, for NASA this fall without a crew on board, three months after the vehicle's debut launch to space went awry. The company hopes to complete all of the objectives the spacecraft was supposed to do on its inaugural flight — namely, docking with the International Space Station — paving the way for people to start flying on the vehicle. "Flying another uncrewed flight will allow us to complete all flight test objectives and evaluate the performance of the second Starliner vehicle at no cost to the taxpayer," Boeing said in a statement. "We will then proceed to the tremendous responsibility and privilege of flying astronauts to the International Space Station."... |
Tigers (and other cats) can catch the coronavirus Posted: 06 Apr 2020 03:08 PM PDT Malayan tiger cub in its enclosure at the Bronx Zoo. It's unclear whether this is one of the tigers that was exposed to the novel coronavirus. | Photo by Andrew Lichtenstein / Corbis via Getty Images When I heard that a tiger at the Bronx Zoo tested positive for COVID-19, I started to worry about my own little lion, a tabby cat with asthma. I've sequestered myself away from friends and family, but could my company be unwittingly putting my cat at risk? While there have been some cases of animals contracting COVID-19, it's rare — and there are precautions that pet owners can take if they're worried about their furry family members. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, which means that they can be passed between animals and humans. In New York City, the virus apparently jumped from an asymptomatic human to three lions and four tigers, including four-year-old tiger Nadia, that tested positive for the virus. The zoo says it expects all of the... |
100 Thieves makes its entire apparel line available in Animal Crossing Posted: 06 Apr 2020 02:55 PM PDT Photo: 100 Thieves Apparel drops from 100 Thieves, a lifestyle and esports organization, are notoriously hard to get in on. Whenever the company releases a new hoodie or jersey, it sells out almost immediately. But there's a new way to get some 100 Thieves gear, and it's not only easy, but cheap: download it in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Today, the company released virtual versions of every single piece they've released to date, spanning three years. As with all user-created items in New Horizons, you can download the designs for free by entering the proper creator code; the codes for all the gear can be found here, organized by the year the items were first released in the real world.

Google updates Pixel 4 with ‘eyes open’ fix for face unlock Posted: 06 Apr 2020 02:41 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Google released an update for the Pixel 4 today requiring users to have their eyes open when using face unlock to open the phone. The update introduces a "require eyes to be open" feature, which is enabled by default. It offers an extra security measure, but you have the option to disable it in the Pixel 4's face unlock settings. The lack of an open-eye detection feature was one of the biggest criticisms of the Pixel 4 at launch. The feature is supposed to help ensure your phone isn't unlocked by people trying to open it while you are asleep. Google announced last October that it would roll out a feature to check whether your eyes are open "in the coming months." Apple has had a similar feature that requires open eyes in Face ID since... |
US hospitals don’t have what they need to fight off COVID-19 Posted: 06 Apr 2020 02:31 PM PDT Photo by BRYAN R. SMITH/AFP via Getty Images Hospitals in Cincinnati are furloughing and cutting hours for nurses and other health care workers. Nurses at a New York City hospital struggled to get tested for COVID-19. A Minnesota health center considered closing because it didn't have enough face masks. A new report from the Office of Inspector General (OIG) at the Department of Health and Human Services, which is tasked with overseeing the agency, makes it clear that those reports aren't just anecdotes, but consistent problems faced by hospitals all over the country as they struggle to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The best thing I saw on Twitch today was a bike messenger riding around Manhattan Posted: 06 Apr 2020 01:51 PM PDT New York City is empty these days. The streets have quieted; the normal pedestrian bustle is nonexistent, and the noise of traffic has turned mostly into near-constant ambulance sirens. Most of us are hunkered down, hibernating until this season of plague shifts into something new. One person who's not is Miekii, a New York City bike messenger who's still out and about delivering food to people across Manhattan for Uber Eats. I happened across his IRL stream this afternoon. It's refreshingly different than the other channels in the category because you get to see a portrait of New York as it changes over the course of a day. Miekii goes live every day around 11AM ET, according to the schedule posted on his channel page, and streams his... |
CBS courtroom drama will use Zoom, FaceTime for special pandemic episode Posted: 06 Apr 2020 01:06 PM PDT The cast of CBS drama All Rise (presumably before social distancing went into effect) | CBS CBS drama series All Rise will produce a "virtual" episode themed on the COVID-19 pandemic, shooting footage in the actors' homes and using VFX to create backgrounds. It's the first episode of a primetime scripted series to be produced while practicing social distancing by using remote programs like FaceTime, WebEx, and Zoom. The episode of the freshman courthouse drama based in Los Angeles will feature the characters dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 shelter-in-place rules, and how the coronavirus pandemic affects the criminal justice system there. "It's a unique chance for our All Rise family to band together – in our different homes, even cities – to tell a story about resilience, justice and the power of community," executive... |
American Football and Anamanaguchi are throwing a coronavirus relief concert in Minecraft Posted: 06 Apr 2020 01:01 PM PDT A number of bands and artists are coming together to put on a virtual benefit concert in Minecraft to raise money for coronavirus research. Chiptune band Anamanaguchi is teaming up with iconic emo band American Football, electronic artist Baths, and a number of other musicians for the free show. The benefit, called "Nether Meant," will occur in a fictional space called Elsewither, which is based on the popular Brooklyn bar Elsewhere. The concert will take place in Minecraft in an area where players can visit, and it can also be streamed on Twitch. The festival is being organized by Open Pit, which has thrown festivals in Minecraft previously, including Coalchella, Firefest, and Mine Gala. You get the picture. Open Pit is selling VIP... |
How to stream your gaming sessions Posted: 06 Apr 2020 12:50 PM PDT Photo by Stefan Etienne / The Verge Update 3:45PM ET, April 6th: Added a link to Streamlabs' new OBS software for macOS, which recently launched. Also, this post has been updated to reflect that Windows Game Bar no longer allows broadcasting. Video game streaming is something many enthusiast and casual players want to partake in, but getting a stream up and running on your preferred gaming platform can be a chore. Streaming gameplay involves sharing the games you play and your reactions in real time with a remote audience. It's like bringing the entire internet into your game room while you're trying to beat that last boss. Currently, the most popular streaming platform in the world is Twitch, but there's competition in the form of YouTube Gaming on mobile devices and... |
