CES 2022 seemingly falling apart: Lenovo joins T-Mobile, Amazon, AT&T and others in bailing out Posted: 22 Dec 2021 06:58 PM PST CES, the world's largest technology show, appears to be in jeopardy due to rising COVID-19 cases in the United States. On Wednesday evening, exhibitor Lenovo announced that it would "suspend all on-site activity in Las Vegas," following announcements from T-Mobile, Amazon, Meta, and others that they'd be ditching as well, and despite CES organizers' statements today that the show would go on. So far, T-Mobile has been the most prominent exhibitor to bail. CEO Mike Sievert, one of the Consumer Electronics Show's featured speakers, publicly announced on Tuesday that he would no longer be doing a keynote and would "significantly limit our in-person participation." Amazon decided not to attend the show in-person entirely, according to B... |
Apple closes several stores due to COVID-19 outbreaks, encourages online shopping Posted: 22 Dec 2021 05:44 PM PST Over the last couple of weeks, several Apple Stores around the US have closed due to rising COVID-19 infections among staff members, and a report by Bloomberg lists seven locations in the US and Canada that have shut down operations within the last day or so. The Apple Stores listed include Dadeland and The Gardens Mall in Florida, Lenox Square in Atlanta, GA, Highland Village in Houston, TX, Summit Mall in Ohio, Pheasant Lane in New Hampshire, and Sainte-Catherine in Montreal, Canada. According to the report, shutdowns are usually called when 10 percent of the store's staff has tested positive. These spikes are occurring as the CDC reports omicron has become the dominant strain of the virus spreading throughout the US. Apple's response... |
LG Display brought a reclining curved OLED throne to CES this year Posted: 22 Dec 2021 05:00 PM PST Would it even be a tech tradeshow without a new throne? 2020 brought us the scorpion chair, 2019 gave us the "fully-immersive" toilet, and attempts to encase gamers in their own PCs have been a thing as long as I've been on the beat. But LG Display has a new, more elegant take on the idea: a rotating curved 55-inch OLED TV attached to a reclining slice of chair that positions you at the sweet spot of those pixels. Like most of LG Display's ideas, the "Media Chair" is a concept, not a product — at least for now. LG Display tells us it's actually working with an unnamed Korean massage chair company to bring it to market someday. "It's being commercialized by them, they're going to sell it," spokesperson Matthew Weigand tells The Verge. |
Amazon workers in Staten Island refile union petition Posted: 22 Dec 2021 04:04 PM PST Amazon warehouse workers in Staten Island, New York, have refiled a union petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), NLRB press secretary Kayla Blado confirmed to The Verge. Workers also staged a "lunchtime walkout" in an attempt to get Amazon to recognize the union, according to a report from CNBC. The Amazon Labor Union (ALU) has been organizing a union at four Staten Island warehouse locations. It initially filed for a union election on October 25th and collected over 2,000 employee signatures in support. However, as reported by Bloomberg, it later withdrew its petition after it was determined that the group needed more signatures. US law dictates that union organizers need the support of at least 30 percent of workers —... |

HBO Max 2022 trailer offers a peek at Westworld and its new Game of Thrones spinoff Posted: 22 Dec 2021 02:50 PM PST The WarnerMedia-owned platform HBO Max packs a lot in its two-minute 2022 preview reel, introducing a number of lower-profile Warner Bros. films making their debut on HBO Max in 2022, marking a shift back towards theatrical releases for mainstream movies. It also offers brief glimpses of all of the other originals coming to the platform next year, including season four of Westworld and the new Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon. Throughout 2021, Warner Bros. experimented with releasing its big-budget films both in theaters and on HBO Max for a month after its release. Wonder Woman 1984, Godzilla vs. Kong, D... |
Jack Dorsey’s hot Web3 takes are apparently too much for Marc Andreessen to handle Posted: 22 Dec 2021 01:08 PM PST Who knew that leaving the top spot at Twitter could make someone a more interesting follow? The co-founder and (for the second time) former CEO of Twitter Jack Dorsey recently opened up about his issues with so-called "Web3" projects that aren't decentralized to his liking and the venture capitalists that he says own the whole thing, creating "ultimately a centralized entity with a different label." Shockingly, his statements haven't been received well by fellow tech thought leaders, billionaires, and venture capitalists, who've taken turns either trying to minimize his criticism of their blockchain efforts or going directly at him.

How to get the most out of your Pixel’s Now Playing feature Posted: 22 Dec 2021 12:53 PM PST The other day, I was watching the documentary The Beatles: Get Back, which flashes on the screen the names of the songs being played and happened to miss the identification of a song I didn't recognize. "What was that?" I asked my partner. He didn't know either. But my Pixel 6 didn't miss it. Looking down at my lock screen, it said "Dig a Pony The Beatles," courtesy of Android's Now Playing feature. Now, I'm not a huge music fan — I'm the kind of person who listens to the same album again and again, and when I hear a great new song, instead of immediately researching the source, I tend to think, "Hey, that's nice," and leave it at that. But now, when I hear something that I sort of like and later on suddenly remember it, I can look it... |
Zombie brand RadioShack is launching a crypto market for ‘the older generation’ Posted: 22 Dec 2021 12:50 PM PST RadioShack, the venerable retailer relaunched as an online-focused brand in 2020, now wants to chart a future as a cryptocurrency exchange. Earlier this week, the company announced RadioShack DeFi (short for "decentralized finance"), a market where people can swap newly announced RADIO tokens as an alternative to a centralized exchange like Coinbase. Moreover, RadioShack insists that it's uniquely positioned to take cryptocurrency mainstream — claiming that "RadioShack, and RadioShack alone, can bridge the gap and 'cross the chasm' of mainstream usage for cryptocurrency." RadioShack's argument is basically that as a very old brand, it's primed to sell old CEOs on cryptocurrency. "Too many [cryptocurrency companies] focused on speculation... |
