How to Fingerpaint

Posted: 18 Mar 2022 09:00 AM PDT

While there are many types of painting, finger painting is probably the most accessible - and the most enjoyable, especially for children. Though it often serves as a learning tool for kids, finger painting is a great activity for people of all ages. You don't need a lot of materials, and the rules are simple - use your fingers! However, even this rule can be broken. The main point is to just have fun!

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Setting Up

  1. Cover the area you plan to paint on. Since finger painting can get messy, especially for children, you should cover your work area with something you can clean off or throw away. You can use anything like newspapers, plastic tablecloths, or even old magazines.
    Fingerpaint Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • If you are still worried, try painting outside where there is less potential to get paint on things.
  2. Tape down your paper. Using your fingers or hands to paint can be a bit more rigorous than using a paintbrush, so keeping your paper in place while painting may be difficult. Taping the corners of your paper down will help prevent both future messes and potentially smudging your picture if your paper moves. This is also a good idea if you plan to paint outside as the wind might blow your paper away.[1]

    • Try to use a tape that's easy to remove like painter's tape.
  3. Set up your paints and water. You will need not only your various jars of finger paint but also a small bowl of water to clean your fingers. You can place these anywhere you want, however, it's best to have them relatively close to your paper for easy access. If working with children, it's best to remove the small bowl of water once they begin painting so they are less likely to knock it over.
    Fingerpaint Step 3 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Starting Your Finger Painting

  1. Prepare your hands. Make sure to wash your hands before you start painting as you don't want to get dirt or anything else on your picture. After this, dip the tips of your fingers into your bowl of water. You want them to be slightly wet, but not dripping. This will help thin the paint out a bit, as well as make it easier to apply to your paper.
    Fingerpaint Step 4 Version 2.jpg
  2. Pick your colors. Most finger paint sets contain the usual rainbow colors along with black, brown, and white. However, if you want a different color, you can always mix some of your paints together. For example, if you want a darker green, try mixing it with a little black or brown. After you've chosen your colors, dip the tips of your fingers into the jars and make sure they are relatively coated.[2]
    Fingerpaint Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • When mixing paint, make sure to do it in a separate bowl or tin as you don't want to ruin the original colors. You should also test out your new color on a separate paper before using it.
  3. Start painting. There are no rules with finger painting outside of using your fingers, so feel free to paint whatever you want - a landscape, an animal or person, even something abstract. Once you've chosen what to paint and what colors to use, simply place your fingers or hands onto your paper and use them like you would a paint brush.

    • You can also use the sides of your fingers, your palm, or your knuckles to finger paint. Each part of your hand will produce a different type of shape, similar to differently sized paint brushes. So get creative and try them all!
  4. Let your painting dry. Due to both the water and paint on your paper, you want to make sure you let it dry out before doing anything else with it. You should place your painting somewhere it's likely to get air or sun without being blown away or knocked over. You should also try to place it on top of something like a newspaper in case the paint runs.
    Fingerpaint Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • The time it takes your painting to dry will vary depending on how much paint is used, however, expect to wait at least 5-10 minutes.

[Edit]Cleaning Up Yourself and Your Area

  1. Wipe off your hands. All paint used for finger painting should come easily off skin with soap and water, however, a wet rag, baby wipes, or any other safe cleaning agent will work. Don't worry too much about getting all the paint off at first as you will likely get more on your hands cleaning everything else up.

  2. Take off your apron or dirty clothes. Once you've removed the dirty items, place them somewhere where they can't get anything else dirty. If you want, you can try to wipe them down with a damp cloth or baby wipes to get off excess paint before washing them. You should also wash this clothing separate from anything else.
    Fingerpaint Step 9 Version 2.jpg
  3. Clean up your area. Put the lids back on your paints and make sure they are closed tightly. You should also wipe them down before you put them away. If you used old newspapers or magazines, you can simply throw them in the trash. However, if you used a plastic table cloth or a tarp, you can either wipe them down with a wet rag or take them outside and hose them off.
    Fingerpaint Step 10 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Tips

  • For a more immersive or tactile experience, add texture to paints like sand, sugar, or oil to finger paints.
  • Make your own paints instead of buying them. It works just as well, and can save money.[3]
  • To make the art shaded, use a piece of tissue paper and rub lightly over the paints on the canvas, which will create shapes and make light and dark colors.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Some paints contain toxic materials, so check the labels before you let children use them.

[Edit]Things You'll Need

  • Jars of different colored finger or poster paints - washable or non-toxic for children
  • Bowls or jars, one for water and others for paints
  • Thick paper to paint on (scrapbooking, watercolor, cardstock, etc.)
  • Cloth or baby wipes to wipe hands
  • Newspaper, magazines, or a plastic tablecloth to cover table
  • Any media you want to use to add texture (sand, oil, sugar, etc.)
  • Old clothing or apron

How to Make Fish and Chips

Posted: 18 Mar 2022 01:00 AM PDT

Fish and chips is a popular take-out food dish from the United Kingdom, composed of battered and breaded fish deep-fried in oil with a side of deep-fried potatoes. Surprisingly easy, especially if you have a deep-fryer, this classic dish is famous on both sides of the Atlantic for a good reason.

[Edit]Ingredients

  • 2 large (8-ounce) cod or haddock fillets
  • 3-4 large Russet potatoes
  • Vegetable oil for frying

[Edit]Batter

  • 2 cups of flour, plus 1/2 cup separate for dredging
  • 1 tbsp. baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black or cayenne pepper (both for spicier fish)
  • 1 can brown beer or 1 beaten egg + 12-ounces soda water
  • 1 teaspoon ground pepper and/or salt (optional)
  • 1/2 cup of either cold water, buttermilk, or cold beer

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Prepping the Chips (1st Fry)

  1. Chop your potatoes into long fries, roughly the thickness of your index finger. You can cut the fries any width you want, but try to keep them all a uniform thickness. This helps them cook evenly. To get good chips, use a V-slicer with a wide blade,[1] or simply use your hands:
Make Fish and Chips Step 1 Version 4.jpg
    • Rinse and scrub the outside of the potatoes to remove dirt. Leave the skin.
    • Cut the potato in half, lengthwise.
    • Take your two halves and cut them in half again, this time through the sides. You should be left with four "planks" of potato.
    • Cut these planks into strips.
    • Cut the strips, if desired, into shorter individual fries.
  2. Optionally, soak the potatoes in cold water for 1-2 hours. This slightly tenderizes them, giving them more moisture inside so that you get a creamier texture inside the chips. If you do soak them, drain them of water and pat dry with paper towels before proceeding.
Make Fish and Chips Step 2 Version 4.jpg
    • These fries could even soak overnight if you feel like working in advance.
    • Make sure, if you plan to soak the potatoes, the oil isn't burning on your stove![2]
  3. Get a deep pan and coat the bottom with three inches of vegetable oil, heating to 325F degrees. A large dutch oven or a deep-fryer will work best. You will need to know how hot the oil is to get the best results, as the fries and fish need to cook at different temperatures for both to come out fully cooked but still tender.
Make Fish and Chips Step 3 Version 4.jpg
    • If you don't have a thermometer, but want to go for it anyway, use medium heat for 325F and medium high for 372F (needed later). Give the oil 2-3 minutes to adjust when changing temperature.[3]
  4. Fry the chips so they are covered completely in hot oil for 2-3 minutes. When they come out, they will be pale and floppy. This is good! They shouldn't be completely cooked the first time, as this leads to soggy, not so delicious chips.[4]

  5. Let the chips cool to room temperature before frying the second time. Remove the chips from the hot oil and drain them on a plate full of paper towels. You'll re-fry the chips again after the fish has cooked, which will get them golden brown and delicious.
Make Fish and Chips Step 5 Version 4.jpg
    • The reason for a double-fry is surprisingly complex: water in the potato is bound up in the starch, with less water in the outer edges that you cut through and more in the centers. In the first fry, this water is driven out, but the water in the center only makes it to the edge of the potato, where it forms a coating with the oil and starch as it cools to room temperature. The second fry crisps up this [5]

[Edit]Battering and Frying the Fish

  1. Make sure your fish is completely thawed out. You can use any type of fish you like; in the U.K. they usually use cod for their fish and chips. If your fish has been in the freezer, take it out and put it in your fridge overnight so it thaws out, but stays cool and fresh.
Make Fish and Chips Step 6 Version 4.jpg
  2. Increase the temperature of the oil to 375F. Turn up to medium and let the oil get nice and hot while you prepare the batter for the fish fry. The oil should not be dirty from the potatoes, as it takes a while to overuse oil, but if it is discolored then you should replace the oil and re-heat it.[6]
Make Fish and Chips Step 7 Version 4.jpg
  3. Whisk together your batter in a bowl and set aside for 15 minutes in the fridge. If you're in a rush, you don't need to actually let the batter sit, though this does help the flavors blend slightly. You'll not that the ingredients have two different liquid components -- a beer-batter and a more traditional egg + water batter. One cup of milk or buttermilk could also be substituted, depending on your tastes and kitchen supplies.

    • The batter will be thin and liquidy -- this is fine.
    • This recipe uses 2 cups of flour. Save the other 1/2 cup for the next step.[7]
  4. Toss the potatoes back into the hot oil for 2-3 minutes to finish cooking. The oil should be 375F, and the potatoes should be room temperature. This method will develop the delicious, golden-brown crunch of great chips. Most cooks will remove the potatoes from the oil before proceeding, keeping them hot in the oven after draining once more on paper towels.

    • Adventurous cooks can go the traditional way and cook the fish on the potatoes. To do so, skip ahead and prepare the fish, then add the potatoes right before you add the fish in. Remove together and drain at the same time.[8]
  5. Lightly dredge the fish in flour to help the batter stick. Simply dust the fish in flour, as this will help the liquid batter stick to the fish instead of sliding right off. You can also use cornmeal or rice flour to help the batter adhere.

    • The entire fish should be dusted with flour when done.
  6. Dunk a piece of fish in the batter with tongs, coating completely. Hold it by the tail to ensure most of the fish gets coated. You just want to work with one piece at a time. This is a thin batter that will try to slip off the slick fish quickly, so it's best to focus on one at at time.

  7. Still holding by the tail, dip the fish in the hot oil, swirling it around until the outside sets. As it hits the hot oil, the batter should rapidly cook and harden onto the outside of the fish. If you just drop it in, however, any batter not touching the hot oil will "melt" right off in the oil and won't stick to the fish.

  8. Cook each fish until golden brown, roughly 2-3 minutes. After you've gotten the first piece in, you can move on to the other pieces until that one is done. Remember to work quickly, and get the pieces out before they burn. If the outside looks tasty and golden-brown, you're good to go.[9]

  9. Drain everything on newspaper (or paper towels) and liberally add salt. The traditional English dish drains paper towels, then rolls everything into a cone on the greasy paper and serves the fish with a bit of salt and paper. You can also drain on oven racks or with paper towels, of course. Enjoy with malt vinegar or tartar sauce.[10]
Make Fish and Chips Step 14 Version 2.jpg
    • Add the salt while everything is still hot to help it spread out better.

How to Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract

Posted: 17 Mar 2022 09:00 AM PDT

Vanilla is a very popular scent for perfumes and fragrances, but some of those fragrances can end up costing a lot of money. There are easy ways to create your own vanilla fragrances using ingredients in your pantry. You can also purchase essential oils to mix with vanilla for a more unique scent, created by you.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Using Vanilla Extract as a Scent

  1. Buy a bottle of vanilla. Organic vanilla extract has a potent vanilla scent, and most people use it for cooking and baking, among other things.[1] If you don't already have a bottle of vanilla extract in your pantry, then you can purchase a small bottle at your local grocery store.
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 1 Version 3.jpg
    • Any size will work, but if you plan on using a lot of fragrance, the bigger bottle will come in handy.
  2. Open the bottle of vanilla extract. Once you're home, you can unwrap the bottle of vanilla extract, being sure to take off the protective wrapper underneath the lid. Replace the lid and put your finger on the opening, completely covering it, and turn the bottle upside down. Flip the bottle upright again and you should have a dab of vanilla on your finger.
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 2 Version 3.jpg
    • Be careful not to spill! Vanilla extract pours a very thin liquid, so it's easy to waste if you tip it or pour too much.
  3. Place the vanilla on your body. Most perfume hot-spots are the wrists, neck and under your ears. Put a dab or drop of vanilla extract on both wrists and the sides of your neck, or wherever you desire.
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 3 Version 4.jpg
    • If your skin has a reaction to the vanilla, it could be that you're using a non-organic or synthetic vanilla with added ingredients.[2] Stop using the product, or try using smaller amounts on different areas of the skin.
  4. Keep the bottle with you. Using vanilla extract as perfume is a good quick-fix, but it doesn't last long. You'll have to re-apply frequently in order to keep the vanilla scent strong.
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 4 Version 3.jpg

[Edit]Creating Your Own Perfume

  1. Buy a spray bottle. You can buy any size spray bottle, or purchase multiple sizes. You can make a large bottle of perfume for your house, but you can also get a small spray bottle to keep in your purse.[3]
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 5 Version 3.jpg
    • Make sure you get a spray cap where you push down, and not pull a trigger. These are much easier to apply perfume.
  2. Buy a bottle of vanilla extract. You should usually purchase one large bottle, and organic vanilla tends to work the best. Getting a bottle of pure vanilla is important, because the perfume won't turn out well if the vanilla extract has sugar in it.[4]
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • If you're worried about the price, just remember: no matter how much you pay, it's going to be significantly less than the price of those expensive perfumes that everyone else buys!
  3. Shop for essential oils. Different types of essential oils can be added to your vanilla perfume to create your own unique scent. You can buy small bottles of essential oils, and try them out to decide what you like best.[5]
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • Popular essential oils are rose, lavender, peppermint, chamomile and patchouli.[6]
  4. Combine ingredients in spray bottle. Pour the essential oil of your choice into the spray bottle, and fill the remainder of the bottle's content with vanilla. If the spray bottle is large, then you can empty the entire essential oil bottle.[7] If the spray bottle is smaller, fill it under half-way, and then top it off with vanilla.
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • Shake the spray bottle well before spritzing onto your skin or into the air. Some people spray the air in front of them and walk through it to use as a body-mist.

[Edit]Choosing New Scents

  1. Buy a container to hold the perfume. You can choose between a spray bottle or just a perfume container. Spray bottles are easy to apply and can fit in a purse, but you can make a larger quantity of perfume in larger containers.
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 9 Version 2.jpg
  2. Buy essential oils. There are a variety of essential oils out there with multiple uses. According to aromatherapy, some scents have certain effects on the mind or body.[8] Having a lot of essential oils to choose from will come in handy for creating new fragrances.
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • You may want to purchase a bottle of vanilla extract, too, if you want to try mixing vanilla as a scent. Other popular perfumes fragrances are jasmine, lavender and rose.
  3. Buy alcohol. Alcohol is used to preserve and combine the scents that you use.[9] You want to choose a mild alcohol without a lot of influence on the fragrances you select.
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 11 Version 2.jpg
    • Many people use vodka or rum for their homemade perfumes.[10]
  4. Mix two or three chosen oils in a bottle. You can choose from your essential oil selection which fragrances you'd like to use, but don't use more than three. Put 25-30 drops of the scent you'd like to stand out the most, while adding 12-20 drops of one or two other "base oils."[11]
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 12 Version 2.jpg
    • It would be best to let these oils sit for several days to allow the fragrances to combine, but this is optional if you need a quick-fix.
  5. Add the alcohol to the oils. After your oils are mixed, add about four ounces of alcohol of your choosing. Shake the alcohol-and-oil mixture well to allow all the scents to mix and combine. You can either use the perfume right away, or allow it to sit for a few weeks to let the alcohol scent fade and the perfumes to combine.
Make a Vanilla Scent Using Extract Step 13 Version 2.jpg
    • Sometimes fragrances change after several weeks. You may enjoy the scent right when you mix the products, but then discover that you don't enjoy it after a couple weeks. Alternatively, you may dislike a scent right away, only to discover the scents combined well after two weeks of sitting alone.[12]

[Edit]Things You'll Need

  • Vanilla extract
  • A variety of essential oils
  • Alcohol, such as vodka or rum

How to Do a Straddle Split

Posted: 17 Mar 2022 01:00 AM PDT

Stradfle splits are also known as the middle splits and can be very difficult to achieve. It requires a lot of flexibility in your legs which can only be achieved with practice. Remember to always warm up your body and take advantage of yoga poses to help your body prepare for the intense stretch. The middle splits require flexibility in your hip flexors, groin, quadriceps, and hamstrings.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Performing the Straddle Split

  1. Warm up. It is important to warm up your muscles and stretch to ensure that you do not injure yourself. You must especially stretch and warm up your legs and back as they will be primarily involved in performing the straddle splits.
Do a Straddle Split Step 1 Version 4.jpg
  2. Position yourself against a wall. Lay on your back with your legs in the air and your butt against a wall. Keep your back straight and flat as your press against the wall for support. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes for mobility and traction. Lay on a mat or pillow if the ground is uncomfortable for your back.[1]
Do a Straddle Split Step 2 Version 4.jpg
    • You will need shoes with good traction in order to walk your legs out across the wall.
  3. Walk your legs out. Slowly drop your legs to each side of you along the wall in a "V" shape". Spread your legs apart until they are tight but not far enough that you feel pain. Hold the V pose for 10-15 seconds.[2]
Do a Straddle Split Step 3 Version 4.jpg
  4. Move to a standing position. Once you have practiced the V position against a wall, stand comfortably with your feet shoulder-width apart and bent over at the hip. This is best done on tile or hardwood but make sure that the floor isn't too slippery.[3]
Do a Straddle Split Step 4 Version 4.jpg
    • Practicing barefoot may help you slide along the floor whereas socks may be too slippery and cause injury.
  5. Push your feet outwards. Using a slow and controlled movement, slide your feet outwards, and lower your butt towards the ground.[4] Take your time and use your arms to steady yourself. If you find your feet slipping, try wearing shoes or practicing on a rubber mat.
Do a Straddle Split Step 5 Version 4.jpg
    • If you feel you can't get as far as you like, use a chair in front of you or practice in front of a wall to stabilize your body.
    • Point your toes out and upward towards the sky. You should not let the tops of your feet turn in if you can help it.
  6. Stop when it becomes tight. Once you've reached the furthest angle of your splits, hold the pose and breathe as you hold 10-15 seconds. Work your way back up to the starting stance slowly to make sure you don't injure yourself.[5]
Do a Straddle Split Step 6 Version 4.jpg
    • Roll your hip downwards to inch further down. This keeps your stomach towards the ground as your legs continue to spread.
    • For a greater stretch, roll your hip backwards to turn out your legs. This is difficult but gives your hips a deeper stretch.
  7. Practice as much as you can.[6] Straddle splits take time to master as you need to increase your flexibility. Remember to always warm up before you practice and only push yourself as much as your body will allow. Go slowly and utilize proper movements to make sure you don't injure yourself. [7]
Do a Straddle Split Step 7 Version 3.jpg
    • Working on this pose daily can help you get into a full straddle split. Aim to do the straddle stretch for approximately 3 to 5 minutes per day.[8]

[Edit]Warming Up Your Body

  1. Perform cardio exercises. It's important to warm up your muscles before getting into the splits. Perform about 15 minutes of cardio to warm up your muscles. There are many options for cardio so do what you enjoy so you don't get bored by the repetition. Whether you enjoy jumping jacks, climbing stairs, or jogging, get your muscles to loosen up and slowly work them up to more vigorous movements.[9]
Do a Straddle Split Step 8.jpg
    • Increase the intensity of your warm up with jump rope, squats, or box jumps to get your blood flowing in your legs.
  2. Stretch your back. Form a bridge by lying with your back on the floor and trying to push yourself up on your feet and hands. Your knees should be bent with your palms and feet planted on the ground. You should try to form a bridge by lifting your back as far from the ground as you can by pushing down through your feet and hands.[10]
Do a Straddle Split Step 9.jpg
    • Point your elbows to the ceiling and feel your back stretch. It may be difficult at first but with time and practice your flexibility will increase. Don't force anything if you start to feel pain. Push yourself to feel a stretch but don't push so far that you feel pain.
  3. Stretch your lower body. Use the runner's stretch for your lower body. Get into the lunge position by taking a step forward. Bring your fingertips as low as you can. Raise your butt by slowly straightening your front leg. Inhale as you straighten your leg. Feel your front leg stretch and exhale. Get back into the starting lunge position and repeat.[11]
Do a Straddle Split Step 10.jpg
    • Repeat the runners stretch for both legs, repeating 4x per leg.
  4. Stretch your upper body. Perform a standing side stretch by reaching over your head, grip your fingers together but extend your pointer fingers and keep them together. Stretch and inhale as you get as long as you can while bending to one side. Take a deep and slow breath as you hold your pose for 5 seconds then return to a tall, standing position with your arms above your head.[12]
Do a Straddle Split Step 11.jpg
    • Make sure to perform the standing side stretch on both sides of your body.

[Edit]Practicing with Yoga

  1. Practice the frog pose. Open deep muscles in your inner thighs with this pose. Start on all fours, rest on your forearms instead of your hands, and lower your pelvis and hips by slowly spreading your knees apart. Make sure to use control and breathe deeply as you lower yourself.[13]
Do a Straddle Split Step 12.jpg
    • Feel the stretch and don't go over your capacity. Once you feel a stretch, hold the pose and take 10 - 15 breaths.
  2. Get into the butterfly pose. This pose is great for working toward the straddle splits. Sit with a tall posture and the soles of your feet together with you knees dropping to your side. Inhale and exhale as you gently lower your knees. Don't force your knees down by feel the stretch. Once comfortable, slowly move your chest toward your feet, keeping your spine straight as your fold your body forward. Hold for 10 breaths.[14]
Do a Straddle Split Step 13.jpg
    • If your knees are high off of the ground, add some support under your seat so that your hips lift up off the floor. You want to release the tension on your hip flexors.
  3. Pancake yourself. Pancake pose is a high intensity pose. Sit up tall and keep your legs spread wide apart. Lengthen your spine by slowly lifting your chest. Flex your toes to create tension in your legs. Bring your chest to the floor as you move your fingertips in front of your pelvis and continue to walk them forward slowly. Keep your spine straight and only move as far as you feel the stretch.[15]
Do a Straddle Split Step 14.jpg
    • Take 10 - 15 breaths as you move further into the pose.
    • Let gravity help you open your hips and legs in this pose so that your body becomes familiar with the movements of straddle splits.
  4. Sit and straddle stretch. Sit with your legs as far apart as possible with your toes pointed but legs relaxed. Lean forward to stretch your hips over your hamstrings. Keep your lower back as flat as you can and avoid rounding it.
Do a Straddle Split Step 15.jpg
  5. Warm up with front splits (optional). If you have already tried front splits, you may use it to warm up. The front splits is a great way to develop hip and hamstring flexibility in order for you to move on to the straddle splits.
Do a Straddle Split Step 16.jpg

[Edit]Video

[Edit]Tips

  • Be patient and take your time with each new exercise and movement.
  • You may do the front splits with your hips turned out or have them squared. The squared option is more difficult but gives you a deeper stretch.[16]
  • Stretching properly and for a good amount of time before and after, so that you don't pull any muscles.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Performing a straddle split can result in injury if you do not stretch and warm up. Do not push your muscles past stretching and into more painful movements. It takes time to increase your flexibility.
  • Perform splits slowly to avoid injury. Avoid slippery floors to ensure you lower yourself into a controlled split.

How to Dry Your Clothes Quickly

Posted: 16 Mar 2022 05:00 PM PDT

Your clothes are wet, and you need them dry. Ultimately, the goal is to quickly remove the water from the fabric by any means possible: heat, spinning, airflow, or pressure. Try placing a fresh, dry towel into a standard tumble-dryer to speed up the water-absorption process. Try ironing or blow-drying each garment to steam out the water with heat. Before you dry: use a high-spin wash, then wring your clothing out to remove any excess water and speed the drying process.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Wringing Out Excess Water

  1. Use a high-spin wash. If you're using a washing machine, you can prime your clothes to dry more quickly. Use a high spin setting on your washing machine to remove as much water as possible from your clothes before you even take them from the wash. According to the Energy Saving Trust, the increased energy used to do this is negligible compared to the energy that it takes to run a standard tumble dryer.[1]
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 1 Version 6.jpg
  2. Wring your clothing out so that it will dry more quickly. Hold a garment firmly in both hands. Squeeze, twist, and knead the fabric to wrench out as much water as possible. Be careful not to pull too hard, or you might stretch the fabric. If you're inside, wring the water into a sink or tub; if you're outside, you can wring the water directly onto the ground.
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 2 Version 5.jpg
    • Wring your clothing before drying, whether you intend to tumble-dry or hang-dry. The more excess water you can remove before starting a dry cycle, the more quickly a garment will dry.
  3. Twist the clothing into a towel to absorb the water. Put down a large, fluffy towel, then lay the wet garment on top. Roll up the towel tightly with the clothing inside. Twist the bundle: start at one end, rolling methodically, and work your way along until the entire towel is tightly twisted. This squeezes excess water out of your clothes and into the towel.
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 3 Version 5.jpg
    • If this trick doesn't remove all of the water the first time around, consider using another dry towel to repeat the twist.
  4. Try salad spinning your clothes. Put your wet clothing into a salad spinner, if you own one. This device serves as a quick pre-dryer, or a low-energy version of a high-spin wash: it will fling the excess water from your clothes. You'll still need to let your clothing dry afterward, but the spinning should make the process substantially faster by ensuring that your garments aren't so waterlogged.[2]
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 4 Version 5.jpg

[Edit]Drying Without a Dryer

  1. Use a hairdryer. If you have access to a handheld blow-dryer, you can use it to quickly and intensively dry your clothing. First, wring out the wet garment and lay it on a clean, dry surface. Turn the hairdryer to a warm or high setting – it's more about the air flow than the heat. Hold the blow-dryer near the clothing, and dry it spot-by-spot with quick blasts of hot air. Work your way slowly around the entire surface of the garment, front and back, inside and out, until the whole thing is dry. You have to pay attention to not overheat you hair dryer in order to avoid its damage.
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 5 Version 5.jpg
    • Rotate the garment frequently to dry any pockets, sleeves, and collars. Dry them from the inside and the outside to ensure that you do a thorough job.
    • Be careful not to point the blow-dryer at one spot for too long. If some garments or surfaces get too hot, they might catch fire.
  2. Use a clothesline or drying rack. Hang your clothing on a line, if possible, or use a drying rack. A line is usually fastest, but it is not always practical. Make sure to hang each item individually so that it has the space and ventilation to dry quickly. Rotate and flip garments periodically to ensure an even dry.[3]
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 6 Version 5.jpg
    • Try setting up your line or rack near a heat source. Hang your clothing a few feet away from a fireplace, radiator, boiler, or furnace. Be very careful when placing flammable materials near heat; if you let your clothes get too hot or cover up a heat source, you may risk fire. Do not drape your clothes over a heat source.
    • Try setting up your clothing to dry somewhere with a brisk airflow – anywhere air is moving. Hang your clothes by a window (or outside) if there's a breeze, or set up a fan to simulate the airflow inside the house.[4]
    • If you use a drying rack with individual bars, try hanging must-dry items over two bars rather than just one. The more surface area you expose to the airflow, the more quickly a garment will dry.
  3. Use an iron and a towel. Lay your wet garment on an ironing board, as if you are going to iron it, but lay a thin towel on top. Iron the towel firmly and thoroughly using a high heat. Make sure to turn the garment over so that you press both sides. The iron-and-towel combination channels some warmth into the fabric, and the towel will absorb some of the moisture.
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 7 Version 5.jpg
    • Do not put a hot iron directly onto a wet piece of clothing. This may stretch and damage the fabric, rendering the garment unwearable. If you use an iron on wet clothing, always use a towel for protection.

[Edit]Tumble-Drying with Towels

  1. Dry a wet garment with a few clean, dry towels. The towels will absorb some of the moisture from the wet clothing, and the whole batch may dry more quickly as a result. You can use as little as one towel or as many as five; in general, the more towels you use, the more quickly your clothes will dry.[5] Bear in mind that this trick works best when you only need to quickly dry one or two pieces of clothing. The more wet garments you add to the dry cycle, the less effective the towels will be – and the longer your clothes will take to dry.
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 8 Version 5.jpg
  2. Put your garment in the dryer along with the towels. Do not add any other clothing. At most, add two or three pieces of wet clothing, but nothing too heavy. Be aware that towels are often lint-heavy, so there is a chance that lint will build up on your garment.
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 9 Version 5.jpg
    • If lint is a concern, you can use cotton T-shirts in place of the towels – although T-shirts will not be as absorptive as towels. Adding dryer sheets can reduce the chances of lint from the towels building up on your garment.[6]
  3. Clean out the lint trap. When lint builds up, it can prevent your dryer from moving air efficiently, making it work harder and use more energy to dry clothes. Depending on the design of your dryer, the lint trap will either be on the top of the dryer or located just inside the door. Locate the trap and pull out the screen. If it is covered in a layer of lint, it is already somewhat blocked. Pull the lint away, or scrape it from the screen using your fingernails.[7]
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 10 Version 5.jpg
    • Consider using a vacuum cleaner to quickly and efficiently remove the lint. You can do this to finish the job after pulling away the bulk of the lint. Don't worry too much about getting it absolutely clean – if the lint screen is mostly unobstructed, the dryer will run near top efficiency.[8]
    • When you have cleaned the lint trap to your satisfaction, simply slide the screen back into the trap. Make sure that it fits neatly. You are ready to dry.
  4. Dry the clothes. Load the wet garments and the dry towels, and make sure that the dryer isn't overfull. Turn the dryer on to the highest heat setting that is safe for the garment you're trying to dry – this will vary from machine to machine, but you should generally use a lower heat for delicates and other thin clothing. Set the dryer to run, then do whatever else you need to do to get ready.
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 11 Version 5.jpg
  5. Wait fifteen minutes, or as long as you can. Open the dryer door and pick your garment(s) out from the towels. You should find your garment mostly dry. If not, put it back in and run the dry cycle for a few more moments. Be patient, depending on your dryer, it could be +/- five minutes.
Dry Your Clothes Quickly Step 12 Version 5.jpg
    • Make sure to remove the dry towel (which may no longer be so dry) if the cycle takes 20 minutes or more. After this point, the now-damp towel may actually slow down the drying process.

[Edit]Video

[Edit]Warnings

  • Do not put clothes in the microwave; they can catch fire.
  • Make sure the lint tray is empty. Since the load is mainly dry, there is a high risk of the lint catching on fire due to static electricity.
  • Doing this wastes a lot of electricity, so instead you should be prepared, and get your clothes dried early.
  • Use towels that you don't need immediately, depending on the dryer/garment the towels themselves may need a washing.

How to Change a Lock

Posted: 16 Mar 2022 09:00 AM PDT

Change is good—especially when it comes to your safety! Sometimes that includes changing the locks on your doors. It's a fairly simple task, and only takes a few minutes—but it will provide you with great peace of mind. This article will show you how to change keyed doorknobs and deadbolts. Information for a mortise-type; lock cylinders can be found in the related article listed below.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Door Lock Removal

  1. Determine which brand of lock you have. This is usually printed on the latch, but can also be found on the key — useful if the plate has been painted over, or is a leftover from an old doorknob set. You won't need an exact replacement of your old lock, but knowing the brand, style, setback, and features of the old lock will help ensure that your new lock looks, fits, and works as advertised.[1]
    Change a Lock Step 1 Version 6.jpg
    • Replacing your lock with another of the same brand and basic style will help ensure that no modifications will have to be made to the door itself.
  2. Measure the size of your doorknob. Often, front and back door locksets will be larger than interior locksets. Knowing in advance which size you need will save you headaches later.
    Change a Lock Step 2 Version 5.jpg
    • Draw a tape measure from the latch edge of the door to the center of the doorknob or deadbolt lockset. Most contemporary locksets are either 2-3/8 inch (6cm) or 2-3/4 inch (6.5cm) diameter.
    • The bolt or latch in many new locksets are adjustable for both, but make sure before leaving your hardware store to keep from having to backtrack.
    • Older locksets may vary in size, but are generally smaller, requiring more extensive carpentry (and greater woodworking skills). If that's what you have, try checking vintage renovation stores for a "new" lockset.
  3. Remove the interior knob, if possible. Release the springs holding the knob in place. The doorknob should come off easily, leaving you only with a decorative cover. If the springs on the knob cannot be accessed before removing the decorative cover, remove the interior cover first before removing the knob.[2]
    Change a Lock Step 3 Version 5.jpg
  4. Remove the interior decorative cover. The screws for the cover may or may not be visible once you remove the knob. If they are, simply remove them and set them aside. If they are not visible, look along the edge for a hole, where they sometimes hide an allen bolt. If there are no holes or hidden screws, the plate is simply snapped in place — use a thin flathead screwdriver to gently pry off the cover, exposing the locking mechanism.[3]
    Change a Lock Step 4 Version 5.jpg
  5. Disassemble the lock sections by unscrewing the two interior screws. Remove the screws that secure the interior lock section to the exterior half. These are found on the inside half of the knob. Once both screws are removed, simply pull each half of the knob straight away from the door.
    Change a Lock Step 5 Version 5.jpg
    • Don't let the door close or you will either have to re-insert the half of the knob with the "blade" on it or use a screwdriver or butter knife to unlatch it.
  6. Remove the latch assembly (doorknob). Remove the two screws from the latch assembly on the side of the door. Remove the strike plate on the door jamb as well.[4]
    Change a Lock Step 6 Version 4.jpg
    • If your new lock is the same brand and model as the old one you may be able to keep your existing latch plate and strike plate. Hold the new plates up to the old and compare — if they're the same, it is better to leave the old ones in place if possible. Removing and replacing screws tends to weaken their hold in the door.
    • If you can't get the new screws to bite, you may have to shove a small splinter of wood (or two) into the screw hole and snap them off flush with the edge of the door (toothpicks work well for this).
    • Another alternative is to purchase longer screws, but make sure that the screw heads are identical to the ones provided by the manufacturer or they may not seat properly and cause problems.

[Edit]Door Lock Installation

  1. Install the latch. Chisel out any uneven recesses in the latch so that your new latch will fit perfectly. Place the new latch into the recess. If the new latch rests snugly into its recess, don't worry about adding the screws until the remaining parts of the lockset have been installed.[5]
    Change a Lock Step 7 Version 4.jpg
    • If the new latch has trouble staying put in its recess, fit the screws into the latch and then tighten down.
  2. Install your new lockset, making sure that the keyed section is on the outside. Slide the outside parts of the lockset into the hole, through the latch assembly. Holding them roughly parallel to the floor, insert the inside set, sliding it onto blade of the outside part of the lockset. Insert the mounting screws, and tighten them down.[6]
    Change a Lock Step 8 Version 4.jpg
    • Make sure that the strike plate lines up with the new lock. If it doesn't, it's advisable to replace the strike plate.
  3. Test the latch operation and the locking mechanism with the key. Test this with the door open. If something is amiss, you don't want to be locked out!
    Change a Lock Step 9 Version 4.jpg
  4. Tighten any remaining screws and check for accessibility. Your new doorknob should be fairly springy, opening and closing with ease.
    Change a Lock Step 10 Version 4.jpg

[Edit]Deadbolt Removal

  1. Disassemble the deadbolt lock by unscrewing the two exterior screws. This will allow you to have access to the interior of the deadbolt lock.
    Change a Lock Step 11 Version 3.jpg
  2. Use an Allen wrench to remove the interior screws from the deadbolt. A couple of quick turns using your Allen wrench (or hex key — they're the same thing) should be able to loosen the deadbolt mechanism from the inside. Remove the inside cylinder and outside cylinder.
    Change a Lock Step 12 Version 3.jpg
    • If your deadbolt lock has decorative caps over the screws, use a punch and hammer to knock the caps off center and then grab them with pliers. Then use the Allen wrench to unscrew the mountings.
  3. If you cannot remove the screws using an Allen wrench, you may want to try to drill into the deadbolt to remove it. This is not the best option, and it requires a strong drill bit, but it will help remove a deadbolt.
    Change a Lock Step 13 Version 3.jpg
    • From the outside, drill into the cylinder in the middle of the deadbolt lock where the tumblers are found. Remove the tumblers.[7]
    • Alternately, drill on both sides of the deadbolt, halfway between the top and bottom. Drill through on both sides until the exterior covering comes out.
    • Insert a screwdriver into the latch and turn the knob lock.
  4. Undo the Phillips head screws on the side of the door to remove the deadbolt. Take the old deadbolt out and clean up any remaining debris or dust from the deadbolt recess.
    Change a Lock Step 14 Version 3.jpg

[Edit]Deadbolt Installation

  1. Orient and load in the new deadbolt lock into the side of the door. Make sure the top of the deadbolt is facing up. After lining it up, load in the deadbolt and fasten to the side of the door with two Phillips screws. Be careful not to over-tighten.
    Change a Lock Step 15 Version 3.jpg
    • Once you've installed the deadbolt on the side of the door, use a screwdriver to test the functionality of the deadbolt.
  2. Line up the tongues of both the interior and the exterior cylinders into the deadbolt controller. The tongues of both cylinders are flat on one side and curved on the other. Fit both tongues into the cylinder so that the flat sides are touching each other. For ease of installation, fit one cylinder in first, and then the other; fitting in both at the same time can be difficult.[8]
    Change a Lock Step 16 Version 3.jpg
  3. Screw in the screws on the interior of the door. Screw in both screws and fasten tightly, but not so tight that the deadbolt is off-center.[9]
    Change a Lock Step 17 Version 3.jpg
  4. Check that the deadbolt performs its job as advertised. Fit your key into the deadbolt and turn. Look for a nice fluid turn. Check that the deadbolt is centered.[10]
    Change a Lock Step 18 Version 3.jpg

[Edit]Tips

  • Use graphite lubricant in your locks—you may not need to replace locks so frequently. Use the graphite lubricant inside the lock and also where you insert the key. An easy way to apply graphite is to draw on your key with a pencil.[11]
  • Starter kits to re-key locks can be purchased for $10 to $20 and are usually comprise a simple tool to open the locks and a few spare cylinders to enable you to change keys.
  • You can also switch between a passage lock (no locking function at all), a privacy lock (a push button lock that only works from the inside and unlocks itself when the inside knob is turned), and a keyed entry knob.
  • You can switch your deadbolt from having a thumb latch inside to have keyed latches on both sides. Although the thumb latch may seem more convenient, you may want double keys if you have a large window on your door.
  • Learn to re-key a lock. Re-keying locks prevents you from throwing away a lot of good locks that can still be fixed. Re-keying locks gives you the option of using one key for all the exterior doors. Some lock manufacturers offer matching locksets, making this process much easier than doing it yourself.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Also, this key should be an original, not a duplicate. How many times have you had to jiggle a poorly duplicated key to work the lock? Now imagine trying to do that in a room full of smoke and flame. Keep a separate key for each door this applies to, even if they are keyed alike.
  • If you have a deadbolt that is keyed on the inside as well as the outside, then you must keep a key within easy reach in case of emergency. It should be easy to find in the event of a fire and you should make sure that everyone in your household knows where it is. You may want to tape it to a fire extinguisher or an emergency flashlight. Do not remove this key from your home under any circumstance.
